Dombo Hippo Pools | Moremi

Even so, these kingfishers are pretty common, when you visit Botsuana, I never get tired of getting a good picture of them. Love these birds.

The granite hills of Domboshava, 30 kilometres north of Harare and a popular spot for a day trip from the city. The name is derived from the Shona words dombo meaning “rock” and shava meaning “light brown”. The hill is a National Monument of Zimbabwe and has some examples of San (bushman) cave paintings which might be as much as 6,000 years old. It also has beautiful views of the surrounding Mashonaland countryside, dotted with the ancient rock formations that are its most distinctive feature.

It also has a little interpretative centre, the little building centre of shot.

I think this is the most Zimbabwe landscape shot I have ever taken. It just looks like this, especially in Mashonaland - the light, the rocks, the trees, the hills.

This shot was taken at Domboshava, near where the rock paintings are.

The Domboshava Hill and Caves are a national National Monument around 30km north of Harare. The balancing rocks, complete with a superb view over the countryside of Mash East.

The site has both granite geological formations and a cave with late Stone-Age rock paintings, with views over dusty rural landscapes, sacred forests and woodlands. The name is derived from dombo meaning "rock" and shava (pronounced shawa) meaning "red", literally translated as ‘the red rockl’, probably deriving from the red and yellow lichens that cover much of the hill (and clearly visible here).

You can also see a group of people dressed in white robes in the distance. They are members of African Initiated Churches doung what is known locally as 'apostoling': an open air prayer session in the mountains, with chanting in full Southern African multi-part harmony going on unbroken for hours. We could hear them from well over a kilometre in the way, carried on the breeze. They must have been in complete rapture. "Why do they go to the mountains to do this? ", I asked my Zimbabwean friends. They looked at me as if I were mad. "To be closer to God." Which is a good ancient Irish tradition, too, when you think about it. So I told them about St Patrick and Slemish.
