Today's Science Lesson: though this rattlesnake -- common in the Ozarks, but not on our property -- seems to be napping, as the weather cools it becomes sluggish and stays near its winter hibernaculum, usually a small cave on wooded hillsides. Most snakes in Missouri, however, go into brumation, a slowing metabolism, so on warmer days might briefly appear. We see more common and non-poisonous garter snakes, kingsnakes, black and rat snakes and almost no rodents, thanks to our slithery neighbors.

Do not feed this monster of the White imagination! This is not a human being. This is a racist creation in the form of a 19th century collecting box: collecting money in Europe for the 'mission' and 'civilisation' of Africans. This paranoid sculpture has nothing to do with Black people. But it says a lot about Europe's frame of mind in previous generations. Don't feed this mindset. Wherever you are.

With all but a couple barns stored or retired, getting one leading anymore is just not possible, especially in the US where they seem to be impossible to find. Back in 2019, they were getting scarce, but still often enough to not worry me. In 2021, the barns are gone, and so is the simple, but still neat split rail fence that separated the tracks from the parking lot where you could sit and wait for the next train in downtown Haslett.

I saw these in a window and I thought it was a sweet shop but no, it was a soap shop made to look like a bakery.

I do, and I don’t. I remember the feeling. Everyone having so much fun, Chris falling into the torrent....but I don’t remember where this was.

Aerial daredevil Sean D. Tucker performs as part of Team Oracle during a 2018 airshow in Ypsilanti, Michigan. As I recall, this stunt involved a ribbon that was held between the two banners, which Tucker then broke with his low-flying biplane. If you look closely, you can see the red ribbon caught and trailing behind the top left wing.

A beautiful bird of the forests, this is quite a loud bird that is easily heard and maybe seen, but very hard to photograph since they hide in the canopy. The bird is endemic to South and Central India and always found on the slopes of forest hills. It does fly up and down the slopes in search of food though. It is a photographers favorite and a very hard one to get as such - especially in our region.

These are social birds always seen in flocks - usually of 4-6 or more. They keep flying from tree to tree in search of insects on the tree trunks. The birds were out in the open on the edge of a forest and flying from tree to tree. There was a tree stump that the birds stopped briefly and then took off - managed a few flight shots much to my delight!

Many thanks in advance for your feedback, faves and likes - very much appreciated.

CONDEIXA-A-NOVA (Portugal): Buracas do Casmilo.

The espigueiro, also called canastro, caniço or hôrreo, is a structure usually made of stone and wood, although there are some entirely of stone, with the function of drying the coarse corn through the lateral fissures, and at the same time preventing the destruction of the corn by rodents through the elevation of the structure. As corn requires harvesting in the fall, it needs to be as airy as possible to dry in a season as bad as winter.

In the territory of Continental Portugal, they are mainly to the North, in particular in the Minho, Beira Litoral, Beira Interior and Oeste de Trás-os-Montes regions.

In Galicia, in Spain, there are similar granaries to those that exist in Portugal. There are also similar structures in the Spanish regions of Navarra, Asturias, Cantabria and in the province of Leon, where they are called hórreo.

There are also very similar constructions in Scandinavia, especially in Norway, where they are called stabbur and in Sweden, called härbre.

Thought I'd better give the nature lover theme a break and return to city night shots. This was taken back at the start of January, on the north bank of the Thames, underneath the Millenium bridge.
