As the Sunsets and monsoon storms out to west on this Tuesday July 5th 2022 evening .We see a Southbound Rail Runner Express gathering speed after stopping at the station in Sparta the county seat of Hazzard Range county NM .
THE HAZZARD RANGE HERALD
10:40 AM 6/5/2022 Sunday
Hazzard Range sheriff’s office Deputy Nathan Milton took a report of vandalism in the 200 block of Main St/ NM 168 ( Sparta auto parts ) in Sparta . Report completed
The owner was there so I asked if I could take a few snaps. His girlfriend thought that that was a cute gesture by me. The old truck from 1961 has changed a bit since he bought it a couple of years ago:
This is the old 1976 Dodge truck I used to own. I got it by sealed bid from a nearby town's utility department in 1991. I paid $109.27 for it. I bought the camper and put on it and used it to haul the equipment for a band I was in at the time called Mr. Speekeazy. After we'd unloaded the equipment at a gig, we could hang out in it, sitting around the table and use it as a sort of "Green Room" before we started playing. It had a fridge and a stove, and could sleep four. (The bass player even made out in it once.) We called it our tour bus, so that's why I painted "Magical Mystery Tour" on it. Plus, The Beatles are my favorite group.
That was a great old truck.

The D series (also called D/W series) is a line of pickup trucks that was sold by Dodge from October 1960 to September 30, 1993. The same basic design was retained until the October 1993, until the introduction of the completely redesigned Dodge RAM.
The D series was mildly redesigned in the spring of 1965 as the second generation Updates for mid-1965 included a wider tailgate and the replacement of the A-series engines with the updated LA series, as well as a six-inch wheelbase stretch on 8 ft (2.4 m) bed models. The 1968 models received a new front grille—two rows of four holes each.
From 1972 the second generation was replaced by a third generation

Looks like this Dodge diehard is having a hard time wondering why a Chevy dealer wrecker is attending to a Dodge stake bed.

Well it's actually sand dunes, but I don't think there's a song about that...
You can tell it's really circa 1979 (ish) because the sign's old, the dunes are higher, and the air is cleaner. Those boxes by the beach ramp were called phone booths.
You can tell it's actually around '79, because the trees are shorter,

The now FIFTY YEARS OLD Hot Wheels Rapid Responder casting is still going strong despite first being introduced back in 1975 when it was called Ranger Rig and Emergency Squad. Thought to be loosely based on a Dodge D100 and sharing its oversized headlight arrangement with the Super Van casting its now become something of a classic.
The Rapid Responder name came in 1985 and thats the moniker I most associate with this casting. This Batman series themed recolour first appeared back in 2023 but is only now showing up at UK Poundstretcher stores for just 1.99. Its the only casting I was interested in and was surprised that it still has a rather weighty all metal body as I know the basic Mainline equivalent became plastic some years back!
Mint and boxed.
I think I must have cleared out all my local Poundland stores stocks of this Hot Wheels Backwoods Bomb when they first appeared back in January 2016 judging by how many I have in my collection and by the fact that nearly one and a half years later i'm still uploading them onto here! :-0
At the time most Hot Wheels stockists only really dealt with the usual Mainline products and the odd TV/movie themed ranges and so to see this and others in the previously unavailable to us Brits HW Road Trippin' series was certainly a sight to behold especially in the quantities in which Poundland stocked them! Looking so beautifully and overtly retro, the Dodge D100 based Backwoods Bomb ticked all the right boxes in terms of a brilliantly boxy looking vehicle which still maintained its 1970's weighty feel and an inventive and eye catching Turquoise Trail livery. It will be interesting to see whether Poundland will ever again get hold of unsold U.S. only HW ranges again. Mint and boxed.
Billy-Bob is our towns redneck. He's not complete without his pickup truck and a case or two of beer.
There used to be a gas station on every corner at many major intersections.
They sold gas, oil, and anti-freeze, maybe had a few car batteries on hand, and an assortment of fan belts. That was about it.
Of course, major intersection had a whole different meaning in most places back then.

The HW Road Trippin' edition of the Backwoods Bomb camper van casting was so overtly retro looking I couldn't help snapping up several examples when they began to appear in Poundland and B&M Bargain stores back at the start of 2016. Hot Wheels has a truly vast back catalogue of old castings which they regularly reissue for special series like this and this 1970's original looked right at home in the road themed set. Technically generic but has huge overtones of a Dodge D100 this is a wonderfully square rigged model with a reassuringly weighty metal body and stylised Turquoise Trail graphics and packaging. One of many bought from Poundland back in February 2016. Mint and boxed.
My 11 year old Dodge truck seen on Dec 3,1988 that had a slant 6 in it with no power at all and it was all rusty and faded already.
Looks like Chevron has got this roadside breakdown coming up, and the service patrol can move on to the next one.
It won't be long before there's another call, especially in the high desert.

A manic grabbing of these from the pegs of Poundland back in January 2016 means I still have quite a few outstanding in my never ending backlog of models to upload onto here well over 12 months later! :-0
In a sea of long carded old stock HW Mainlines which littered their pegs back then the Road Trippin' series was like a gift from heaven giving U.K. collectors something a bit more unusual to purchase and in almost embarrassingly large quantities! I instantly took a great liking to this Backwoods Bomb casting which is a blatant retro reissue of the best kind with its seventiestastic styling and colour scheme. Officially this is a generic Hot Wheels original design but many think its heavily based on some old Dodge and indeed that front end design has also been used on other HW models from the mid 1970s onwards. The rear camper attachment is easily removable though there is actually nothing of interest underneath but its an impressively weighty little thing which looks extremely crisp from all angles and of course is beautifully packaged in a themed box. One of very many bought from Poundland back in January 2016. Mint and boxed.
