OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had to film Kate for a documentary on substance misuse. And even though we laughed on and off camera her eyes said something else. They had the haunted look of a lost lonely song that could not find speech, that could not find words. The silence within seemed trapped in the midst of chaos and noise surrounding her. After spending time with Kate she began to speak of her true feelings. I am privliged to have told her story, because although scary, her words were also beautiful, like lyrics in every street to many who have been forgotten, who walked the same path as her.

Kate is with us no more, but I know her words affected many and inspired others to believe that there is a way back from the abyss.

I passed Doc again today-

he was walking in and out

of an alleyway on Victory

Boulevard behind an immense

and soulless Sears store on a day when the California sun was beaming down ever more brightly than normal.

We had met before - on a day of rain - and I walked up to him, and said, "Hi, Doc," and he said in return, "Hi, Sheriff."

I told him I wasn't actually a sheriff, and asked him if he had found his mother, as last time we met he told me he needed to get her out of her grave.

He said, "No. Today I am looking for a husband for my sister. You can help. Talk about it. Tell people."

I told him I would, and asked him about his tattoos. "I have one over my heart," he said, and opened his heavy black sweater to show me all the tattoos, of which there were many, on his chest.

When I asked to take his photo again, as I had before, he said, "Yes, yes, take some." I did, and then I told him I love him, which I do, and he said, "I love you, too, man." And then as I started to walk away, he pointed to the shiny rose wall of the store behind him, and said, "I believe you can walk right through this wall."

and a special thanks to Janine for her boots =D

I bought myself a new pair of Docs this weekend. I used to wear DMs all the time but the more traditional black 8 hole 1460 style (these are Gaucho Crazy Horse hiking boots but I don't plan on doing any hiking in them!). Dr. Martens were almost part of an unofficial indy kid uniform along with checked shirts, jeans and combat jacket (sometimes a leather jacket, sometimes both together!) when I was younger.

This is the first pair of Docs I've bought in quite some time and it's nice to reacquaint myself with them.

This is Doc. In the middle of a very "energetic" gathering in downtown Santa Fe. I thought he looked out of place, but he was kind, and liked the Strangers project. When I asked him to pose, he got this far off look that I love. I wish I had framed him on the right side of the image to give his gaze more space to draw the viewer in to. I guess that's why the strangers project is a learning project!

Doc is the fifth stranger in my 100 strangers project www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/

Perdição teus doces lábios a mostrar,

Qual o fruto da árvore do Paraíso,

Que fez o bom Adão perder o juízo,

E loucamente o fruto proibido desejar.

Project 366-1 (2010) February 1, 2010 32/365

The year Rachel was 15, we lived in Nottingham, England. She bought these Doc Marten boots and wore them almost every day. She also wore them after she came back to her American high school. I used Google to confirm the spelling and learned that they are guaranteed for life. I wonder if they would deem these replaceable.

This was my safety shot for yesterday - I wish I had gotten the whole thing in focus.
