Brown Pelicans cruise low over the water, but dive into the water for food. They create quite a striking image, like the one in this picture, when diving for fish.

They are very large birds, with a 7'6" (2.3m) wingspan, and a length of 45-54 inches (1.1-1.4m). The picture looks best in large size.

The Caspean tern zooms by and tucks into a dive when he sees his target prey. Many times they pull up if the fish dissapears but this time he is in for the dive. He came up empty though. Like a pellican they turn into an aerodynamic missile when they mean business.

Kingfisher about to enter the water after retracting his wings into a cigar shape bullet, catching his prey virtually undisturbed.

Hungry red fox diving for a meal on a bitterly cold day . No luck this time.

The combination of this Long Hoverfly and Pink-Sorrel brought to mind the plight of Marie Jules CĂŠsar LĂŠlorgne de Savigny (1777-1851). An intrepid naturalist he was with Napoleon during the French Egyptian adventure; moreover, he was a fine descriptor of his finds. But then bad fortune struck; in the process of describing his specimens he slowly and painfully went blind. Regardless he soldiered on.

He described this Oxalis in 1797 before that great misfortune. It had been found by that great naturalist Philibert Commerçon (1727-1773) who was part of the scientific crew of Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), the first Frenchman to circumnavigate the globe (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/2408098566/in/photolis...).

Commerçon collected this Oxalis in the fields around Montevideo (called Monte-Bido in Savigny's description), today the capital of Uruguay.

Dive bombing the long grass

I suppose the ultimate would be to 'catch' the target in the photo at the same time

Never done it yet

But., as long as I can hold a camera I'll keep trying for that elusive shot

Recently I have been truly inspired by some true artists in here. The way they see things, their visions and how the things are executed by them are simply lovely. Within this piece, I tried to express the deepness that art can bring to us, the knowledge and content that it contains with it.

This Belted kingfisher was seen diving towards the lagoon at Berkeley Aquatic Park, Berkeley California.

Summer action continues in this photo of a Belted Kingfisher diving into the pond in search of small fish. It is 98% crop. Markham, Ontario.

The first snow is just around the corner, so a few thoughts of a wonderful summer are good :-)

There are times that moving in so close to a flower, you lose sight of the over-all beauty of the thing. However, by diving into the center of this rhododendron flower, I discovered a whole new world.

Some of my contacts wanted to know where Waterfall Park was. I put that together with AI. I figured everyone knew that. I got the inspiration from a waterfall park in Central Mexico. I took my then girl friend there thinking she would be impressed because we also stayed in the hotel next door. All she did was complain that it was too load to sleep. I went down to the front desk and had them switch room. We left the next day.

This image was put together with AI as well
