I'm not sure how this happened. I had volunteered to drive around collecting empty water bottles for recycling. But somehow I ended up at the water distribution site and was handing out water for hours upon end.
It was quite interesting how efficient the system was. It was a drive through kind of thing and 4 pairs of volunteers were putting 2 packs of water in each car - and the cars were never ending.
Sindhupalchowk District, Nepal: May 5, 2015: USAID Acting Administrator Alfonso E. Lenhardt, USAID’s Nepal Mission Director Beth Dunford and the U.S. Disaster Assistance Response Team Leader Bill Berger are briefed by staff from the USAID-supported aid group Save the Children during Lenhardt’s visit to Nepal. Immediately after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, Save the Children distributed tarpaulins, kitchen utensils, baby kits, blankets and other much-needed supplies to survivors. So far, the group has reached 16,860 people, including 6,916 children. USAID has contributed over $23 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal in the wake of this devastating disaster.

We distribute food parcels containing essential food items that are sourced locally to accommodate for custom and taste. Each parcel is designed to last a family for one month.

On 24 July, children and women queue for a food distribution, in the Badbado camp in Mogadishu, the capital. The camp, established three weeks ago, shelters almost 30,000 people who have been displaced from rural areas more affected by the drought.
At end July 2011, the crisis in the Horn of Africa – affecting primarily Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti – continues, with a worsening drought, rising food prices and ongoing conflict in Somalia. More than 11 million people are threatened by the worst drought in the region in 60 years. Over 500,000 severely malnourished children are at risk of dying; a further 1.6 million moderately malnourished children, and the wider-affected population, are at high risk of disease. Somalia faces one of the world’s most-severe food security crises, exacerbated by two decades of civil war. In the southern Lower Shabelle and Bakool parts of the country, some 270,000 people are facing famine conditions. Across the country, as many as 1.85 million children (in a total population of 3.7 million) need urgent humanitarian assistance; some 780,000 of these children are also acutely malnourished. Insecurity, limited access and the drought are causing thousands to seek improved conditions in Mogadishu, the still-embattled capital, while tens of thousands of others to flee to Kenya and Ethiopia. UNICEF is working with UN, NGO and community partners to expand blanket supplementary feeding programmes to reach 300,000 Somali families, including 360,000 under-five children, in the next three months. UNICEF is also supporting a range of other interventions in all affected countries, including feeding programmes, immunization campaigns and health outreach, as well as access to safe water and to improve sanitation. UNICEF now requires US $300 million for humanitarian assistance for vulnerable children, women and families in the Horn of Africa region.
