100 steps project Tracy Lofts

DESCRIPTION

The George L. Tracy Building was built in 1919 as a distribution center for manufactured goods. This industrial building is representative of the brick warehouses built along the railroad tracks in downtown Billings during the early 20th century and is among the best preserved brick warehouses in downtown Billings with most of its original design and detailing intact. Nonetheless, the building had been vacant for many years with broken windows and inhabited by pigeons. With the owner of the building and a financial investor, we formed a limited liability partnership to renovate the building.

Since the building is located in the Original Billings Townsite Historic District Expansion, it was already a contributing building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This also meant that the project was an excellent candidate for renovation utilizing historic rehabilitation tax credits. In addition, Tracy Lofts achieved a LEED® for Homes Platinum certification. Numerous high performance strategies were incorporated into the renovated structure. Three rainwater collection tanks totaling 5,000 gallons are located in the basement which will provide water to be used for toilet flushing and clothes washing. A 4-kW PV system on the roof is designed to provide electricity to power the building’s common area needs. Solar hot water, Energy Star appliances and lighting, and recycled building materials are used throughout the lofts. The old windows were either refurbished or built new to replicate the old ones. The building envelope has been insulated and significantly ‘tightened.’ Air changes per hour have been reduced from “unmeasurable” to about 3 ACH. In 2014 the U.S. Green Building Council Montana Chapter presented High Plains Architects with a Sustainable Building Award for the Tracy Lofts, the Residential Building Honor Award.

The completed project transformed 18,000 SF of old warehouse space into 19 loft-style apartments ranging in size from studios to two bedroom units. A waiting list for the units reached past 50. A need for this type of housing has been met. A hole in the downtown streetscape has been filled.

Women Rewarded Solar Lights for Adult Literacy

Solar Lantern Distribution To Adult Women PEP TANDOALLAHYAR Oct12th, 2017

Pakistan has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. The general understanding of literacy in Pakistan is the ability to read and write and unluckily, millions of people in Pakistan are dispossessed of even this. The situation seems even worse when we look into the urban-rural divide. In rural Sindh, women are most deprived of education due to cultural customs which has created gender inequality and has deprived women to have a voice in the society. Through Adult Literacy Education, Primary Education project PEP is on to change that.

Female Adult Literacy program was initiated in 2016. At present PEP is running 26 Female Adult Literacy (FAL) Centers with 316 Female Adult Literacy members (Adult Students) in different areas of rural Sindh as follows,

Khipro48

Mirpurkhas47

Khawaja Goth7

Tando Allahyar80

Tando Ghulam Ali134

There are 6 area officers and 1 WEP coordinator for the implementing and monitoring of the adult literacy program.

As a gesture of appreciation Pervaiz Lodhie President and founder LEDtronics Inc. offered a special gift of a Solar Powered LED Solar Light to the 316 student and 7 program officers.

Funding for the solar lights was provided by one of gentleman from USA. His name is not mentioned here on his advice.

First distribution ceremony was held on Thursday October 12, 2017 in Shaleemabad, Achaar Khaskeli & Shanti Nagar ALCs located in Tando Allahyar districts.

Lt. Gen (Retd.) Syed Perwaiz Shahid a renowned educationist was chief guest for the event.

Ms. Lillian Charles Program Manager PEP and other team members from PEP were present in the event.

During the ceremony 72 female students received solar lanterns. PEP will organize another event in Hyderabad for the distribution of remaining solar lights in November 2017.

A search of the official database of the Registrar General for Scotland (Scots Origins) revealed that there were no Tilstons living in Scotland prior to about 1875. The index of the old Parish Registers covering the years 1553-1856 contains no Tilston family entries at all. Between 1877 and 1898 there are 10 civil registration entries representing four different branches of the family, all of whom migrated up to Scotland from England or Wales. One had a maritime connection having reached Glasgow from Pembroke Dock in South West Wales.
