Thanks to support from Lovejoy Elementary School, New Hope Assembly of God and Hy-Vee, deliveries were made to 100 families (50 to Lovejoy families, 20 to Edmunds families, and 30 to other local families) on Tuesday, November 24th. Volunteers helped to sort and load meals into vehicles at New Hope in Urbandale for deliveries before the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Brush Type 4 (later Class 47) locomotive D1690 was delivered new to Cardiff Canton depot in 1965 and moved to Swansea later that year, where it was named Mammoth and subsequently renumbered 47085. It was later renamed Conadie and then REPTA 1893-1993 (Railway Employees & Public Transport Association - a non-profit organisation) with further reallocations to Bristol Bath Road and Old Oak Common before being cut-up in 1999. It is depicted here in the later Railfreight Distribution livery with blue roof, adopted after that division was split off from the previous Railfreight sector in 1988 (15-Nov-24).

Just beyond the end of Middle Raceway on a high rock ledge is found the ruins of a water distribution system. Water from the raceway was fed to this system and distributed to the businesses below. Several 12" iron pipes descend into two valve/pump chambers and continued down the hill to long gone destinations.

This week we swapped our pick-up day from Tuesday to Saturday (thanks again, Farmer Dave!) because we were out of town on our normal distribution day. I think we'll be eating well this week!
- 3 heads of lettuce
- 1 head of cabbage

- 2 large zucchini
- 2 eggplant
- 2 green peppers
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 onion
- 1 bunch of beets
- 1/2 lb. carrots
- 3/4 lb. green beans
- 1 bunch of scallions
a whole lot of basil
- 4 dill plants (with roots)
- 3 cilantro plants (with roots)
- 20 stems of flowers
We're going to try planting a bit of the dill and cilantro and hopefully it will take! On the menu this week: bharta, tandoori tofu, lots of salads, chocolate-beet brownies, maybe eggplant parmesan (?), and I'm going to try my hand at some lacto-fermentation and make Cortido -- a Latin American sauerkraut with cabbage, onions, and carrots.

To support Ukrainian refugees in Poland, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and its partners have started to distribute food, hygiene products and baby care products to Ukrainian refugees in Krakow and other cities in Poland this week.
The refugees will receive food like canned pasta, marmalade, cereals, coffee and chocolate, hygiene and baby care products such as shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, formula and female hygiene supplies, as well as cleaning detergent and toilet paper. The aid is meant for about 8,000 people. It will be available in distribution points in Cieszyn, Krakow, and the LWF community centers in Ostroda and Gdansk.

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes and the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora, being distributed across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America and Asia. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammal and bird populations. Because of these factors, it is listed as Least Concern for extinction by the IUCN. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the IUCN's list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".
The red fox originated from smaller-sized ancestors from Eurasia during the Middle Villafranchian period, and colonised North America shortly after the Wisconsin glaciation. Among the true foxes, the red fox represents a more progressive form in the direction of carnivory. Apart from its large size, the red fox is distinguished from other fox species by its ability to adapt quickly to new environments and, unlike most of its related species, is not listed as endangered anywhere. Despite its name, the species often produces individuals with abnormal colourings, including albinos and melanists. Forty-five subspecies are currently recognised, which are divided into two categories: the large northern foxes, and the small southern foxes of Asia and the Middle East.
Red foxes are often together in pairs or small groups consisting of families, such as a mated pair and their young, or a male with several females having kinship ties. The young of the mated pair remain with their parents to assist in caring for new kits. The species primarily feeds on small rodents, though it may also target leporids, game birds, reptiles, invertebrates and young ungulates. Fruit and vegetable matter is also eaten on occasion. Although the red fox tends to displace or even kill smaller predators, it is nonetheless vulnerable to attack from larger predators, such as wolves, coyotes, golden jackals and medium- and large-sized felines.
The species has a long history of association with humans, having been extensively hunted as a pest and furbearer for centuries, as well as being prominently represented in human folklore and mythology. Because of its widespread distribution and large population, the red fox is one of the most important furbearing animals harvested for the fur trade.
