This week we swapped our pick-up day from Tuesday to Saturday (thanks again, Farmer Dave!) because we were out of town on our normal distribution day. I think we'll be eating well this week!
- 3 heads of lettuce
- 1 head of cabbage
- 2 large squash
- 2 large zucchini
- 2 eggplant
- 2 green peppers
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 onion
- 1 bunch of beets
- 1/2 lb. carrots
- 3/4 lb. green beans
- 1 bunch of scallions
a whole lot of basil
- 4 dill plants (with roots)
- 3 cilantro plants (with roots)
- 20 stems of flowers
We're going to try planting a bit of the dill and cilantro and hopefully it will take! On the menu this week: bharta, tandoori tofu, lots of salads, chocolate-beet brownies, maybe eggplant parmesan (?), and I'm going to try my hand at some lacto-fermentation and make Cortido -- a Latin American sauerkraut with cabbage, onions, and carrots.

Lahore, October 5, 2016 -- Alyson McFarland, United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Provincial Director for Punjab, joined Chairman Dairy and Rural Development Foundation Dr. Salman Shah in distributing motorbikes to 43 dairy sector technicians at the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences in Lahore.
The newly trained Artificial Insemination Technicians received motorbikes on a cost-share basis under USAID’s Dairy Project, enabling the technicians to provide local farmers in outlying villages with timely and affordable breed improvement services.
“As one of the world’s largest milk producers, Pakistan’s dairy sector offers tremendous potential for the nation’s economic growth. Today’s graduates will be pivotal in shaping the future of this sector as well as the country as a whole,” said Ms. McFarland.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor UVAS Dr. Tallat Naseer Pasha said that the university is collaborating with USAID’s Dairy Project to transfer technology and knowledge to small dairy farmers and rural women for the development of Pakistan’s dairy sector.
Through the Dairy Project, “the Dairy and Rural Development Foundation (DRDF) is transforming the dairy sector by promoting breed improvement, skill development, and best dairy farming practices,” DRDF Chairman Dr. Salman Shah commented. “Our combined efforts will help maximize Pakistan’s livestock and dairy production,” he added.
USAID’s five-year, $21 million Dairy Project has impacted the lives of over 50,000 small dairy farmers by improving livestock productivity and increasing their income by at least 10 percent. The project has made great advances in fostering sustainable dairy farm practices, resulting in a 17 percent increase in the average milk yield and generating more than 8,000 employment opportunities for rural men and women.
Nestle Pakistan Chairman Syed Yawar Ali and Senior Development Advisor for USAID Punjab Sajjad Moghal, also attended today’s event at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore. Other attendees included CEO DRDF Ahmad Sajjad, Managing Director Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC), Sajid Naseer, Dairy Project Chief of Party Jacob Moser, and Dairy Project Field Operations Qaiser Maqsood.

Students who had enrolled for 200 hour yoga teacher training course (YTTC) at Association for Yoga & Meditation (AYM), Rishikesh completed their course on 10 October 2016. ECCC Public Affairs Section has started the job of distributing 10,000 copies of the Duch-verdict (450 pages) and 17,000 copies of the summary (36 pages). These documents will available in all 1,621 communes in Cambodia as well as in libraries, schools and other public institutions.
Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch was found guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes and sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment on 26 July 2010. He is the first person to stand trial before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, more commonly referred to as the Khmer Rouge tribunal.

Thanks to support from Lovejoy Elementary School, New Hope Assembly of God and Hy-Vee, deliveries were made to 100 families (50 to Lovejoy families, 20 to Edmunds families, and 30 to other local families) on Tuesday, November 24th. Volunteers helped to sort and load meals into vehicles at New Hope in Urbandale for deliveries before the Thanksgiving Holiday.
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) at the end of July and the beginning of August 2016 conducted several distributions of humanitarian cash assistance to 1,700 families in Bogra district severely affected by monsoon floods, as part of the forecast-based financing (FbF) programme in the country, supported by the German Foreign Ministry and Red Cross. The FbF disbursements came after the flood peak. They served as pilots – the first under the programme in Bangladesh – for a new money-transfer system via mobile phones being undertaken in conjunction with Bangladesh Post Office. The FbF cash grants – of 5,000 taka (65 US dollars) per househod – were distributed on 2 and 3 August in several villages or union parishads in Bogra: Kamalpur, Kazla and Bhandarbaris 3, 6 and 7. In a separate exercise, the BDRCS branch in Nilphamari district distributed cash for food to 1,000 families. The Red Crescent cash assistance was intended to be spent on food, animal fodder, medicine and transport.
