During this workshop, you will be introduced to scent extraction and the distillation process. Distillation is the process of extracting essential oils from plant based materials. Using your own or materials from the Mediamatic grounds, you will distill your own artistic essential oil.

"Records can confirm that the Kumgai [sic] household functioned as a distillery since the end of the Edo period, however it is believed that the household may have begun distilling from the early days of the Edo period. Their distillery operated under the name 'Takemise'. The distillery was on a large lot south of this residence. Around 1926 they produced several different types of sake with the names Tenryou, Sakurakawa, and Mandai. Later, they continued operating under the name, 'Kumagai Distillery Limited'. The business was discontinued in the 1960s.
Displayed here are tools of a postwar small-scale distillery, with a slightly mechanized production. In this room, a bottling machine and packaging tools can be seen, and in the shed are distilling machines."
