When you have ample time you'll have a lot to talk about.

This was the audience before one of the panel discussions in one of the large ballrooms at the Austin Convention Center. As you can see, just about everyone had their face into a cell phone, PDA or laptop doing Twitter or some other social app.

Filter, filter, filter fun! A way to post people photos anonymously!

They must have had to get their little talk started in a hurry! Wonder what was so important???

Before Twitter and Facebook, activists used the streets as a public forum to express their creativity and organize for political goals, with their messages wheatpasted right onto lampposts and walls. It was the era of 'xerocracy,' and the entire city were gallery walls. Nowhere was this form of expression more prevalent than the East Village. From posters expressing stark opposition to building demolitions, to stencils addressing the AIDS epidemic and more, such expressions of conscience and conflict were everywhere. In this panel discussion we heard from some of the artists of that time, who are still creating today, including Seth Tobocman, Anton van Dalen, Tamara Wyndham and Kristin Reed.

This program was co-sponsored by ABC No Rio in Exile and The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space.

About 100,000 people in the United States have sickle cell disease - most are of African descent. Today, we hosted a forum on the need for diverse blood donors in the fight against this disease.

Our CEO, Celena Roldán facilitated the panel discussion, which highlighted the importance of African Americans donating blood due to unique attributes that can benefit sickle cell patients. Dr. Yvette Miller, executive medical director of the Red Cross, discussed how people with sickle cell historically have been underserved in healthcare. Janine Hopkins, our Illinois region sickle cell account manager and Linda Hubbard, who lost a son to sickle cell, also joined the panel. The conversation included an overview of the disease and its reach, and included a look at the pain and suffering sickle cell patients face on a regular basis. Thank you to all of the panelists for providing your valuable insights today.
