“The Steel worker,” plaster, by Frank Vittor, 1952. Capturing the industrial spirit of his adopted city, sculptor Frank Vittor created this design as a possible monument for Pittsburgh’s Point State Park. Always thinking on a grandiose scale, Vittor envisioned his completed work would tower above the city at a height of 100 feet and would serve as a permanent tribute to the might of its workers. Despite a public petition supported by numerous labor and fraternal groups, officials turned down Vittor’s proposal and the statue was never created. During the public discussion, a newspaper reporter wrote that the piece brought to mind the spirit of “Joe Magarac,” the mythical steel worker of eastern European lore.
