MacArthur announced an initial five-year, $75 million investment that seeks to reduce over-incarceration by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails.
This discussion happened because of a student in 4th hour AP 1 during the 2015-16 school year. She recognized that the difference between deltaU and U is very fuzzy and wanted to make sure she was clear about it.
Note that the problem is the same as the previous slide (it's even the same copy.) So on the right, we have the original work. This took the perspective that "Sea Level" was the zero point for potential energy (h=0, U=mg(0)=0. ) This meant that the driver started at h=14 m and finished at h=14.46m. I re-did the problem on the left, crossing out the sentence about picking "sea level" as the zero point. So we pick the bottom of the hill as the zero point. This means that there isn't initial potential energy, which makes the problem seem different. The final height is 0.46m. So in the first reference frame, she went deltah = (14.46m-14m)= 0.46m and in the second reference frame she went deltah=(0.46m-0m) = 0.46m. Of course, the change in potential energy she got out of her kinetic energy isn't different depending on our reference frame. The bottom line is pick the easiest reference frame you can for your problem- the physics won't change.
