Blue Erigeron or Fleabane growing a topknot with petals growing directly from the centre of the flower. Actually, quite a few of them did that this year.

There is an interesting aside on this in that every part of a plant, petals, stamen, stem, leaf and root has identical genetic coding, yet each grows into something entirely different. The question is then, what informs it?

Rupert Sheldrake (Cambridge University) has done some interesting work on this in what he calls 'morphogenetic fields' where the information of Life lies in another plane of existence. Of course he has been marginalised for many years for his work as it does not conform with 'established' views and, despite his methods being extremely scientific he is still viewed as 'fringe'. There are some that would say - me included - that what he calls a morphogenetic field, could also be called spirit / consciousness..

She photographs what she likes, simply and directly. All photographers start off with this honesty but most unfortunately lose it as soon as they attempt to become a “better” photographer. Their integrity is swamped by gimmickry and the control of technique. Too often photographers aim for visual effect. Pure boredom. They should forget about being conscious of composition and attempt to be more conscious of feeling. Good photographs come from a photographer having a genuine feeling towards a subject and a desire to record it. If you photograph something that really interests you in a direct and simple way it is a fair bet that your pictures will be more significant.

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

Rainbows can be full circles. However, the observer normally sees only an arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground, and centered on a line from the sun to the observer's eye.

In a primary rainbow, the arc shows red on the outer part and violet on the inner side. This rainbow is caused by light being refracted when entering a droplet of water, then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it.

In a double rainbow, a second arc is seen outside the primary arc, and has the order of its colours reversed, with red on the inner side of the arc. This is caused by the light being reflected twice on the inside of the droplet before leaving it.

For some that phrase would describe their eyes after a late night of partying and ringing in the New Year. For me on this first morning of the 20s, it meant first-light reaching Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park.

Being a native East-Coaster, who has transplanted to life on the West Coast, I still feel that the New Year occurs when the crystal ball drops in New York, and that's the end. So, with the aide of staid Springdale, Utah, it was easy to get an early bedtime on New Years Eve so we could begin the trek to the Canyon Overlook Trail at 6:00 AM to catch first-light and sunrise from this vantage.

The trail is a relatively flat mile hike with a few tricky spots where the ice and slickrock conspire to give even the most sure-footed concern in the dark. Once we reached the overlook, I was a little concerned that our cold trek may have been for naught, due to the heavy cloud cover. Though they were thick overhead, there still was some clearing to the East, along the sun on the horizon to light a narrow band, reflecting off the cloud bottoms and warming the sheer rocks faces of the Temple of the Virgin ahead. This image was captured about 10-15 minutes before the local sunrise time, and is considerably brighter than what we saw with our eyes, due to the 20-second exposure.

Once the actual sun rays reached the Temple directly, the light only lit the areas seen here in red for less than 5 minutes before disappearing above the clouds for the remainder of the day.

**************************************************************************

The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a species of bird, a type species of the family Alcedinidae.

This bird is a good natural indicator of the quality of an aquatic environment.

It is a bird that feeds on small fish and small aquatic animals. This is why he lives near bodies of water, where he can eat in abundance. His prey spotted, usually from a perch, he dives violently striking the surface of the water, catches it, then swallows head first in the direction of the scales.

The bird, very vivacious, runs a circuit on its territory by landing on perches he knows, well prepared to watch his prey.

If his position is high enough, he dive directly.

During sunset, a cloud flew in in an amazing shape (a bird, a dragon, and maybe an angel ...)

A little understanding of the physics of cloud formation underscores the complexity of the atmosphere and sheds light on why predicting weather for more than a few days is such a challenge.

Six types of clouds you can see and how they can help you understand the weather.

1) Cumulus clouds - On a sunny day, rays warm the earth, which heats the air located directly above it. The heated air rises upward due to convection and forms cumulus clouds. These “good weather” clouds are like cotton wool. If you look at the sky filled with cumulus clouds, you can see that they have a flat bottom, located at the same level for all clouds. At this altitude, air rising from ground level cools down to the dew point. It usually doesn't rain from cumulus clouds, which means the weather will be good.

2) Cumulonimbus clouds.

Small cumulus clouds do not rain, but if they grow and grow in height, it is a sign that heavy rain is coming soon. This often happens in summer when morning cumulus clouds turn into cumulonimbus during the day. Cumulonimbus clouds often have a flat top. Air convection occurs inside such a cloud, and it gradually cools until it reaches the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. At this moment, it loses its buoyancy and can no longer rise higher. Instead, it spreads out to the sides, forming the characteristic anvil shape.

3) Cirrus clouds form in very high layers of the atmosphere. They are smoky because they are composed entirely of ice crystals falling in the atmosphere. When cirrus clouds are carried by winds moving at different speeds, they take on a characteristic curved shape. And only at very high altitudes or at high latitudes, cirrus clouds give out rain that reaches the ground.

4) Stratus Clouds - A low-lying, continuous cloud sheet that covers the sky. Stratus clouds are formed by slowly rising air or gentle winds that cover the cold land or sea surface with moist air. Stratus clouds are thin, therefore, despite the gloomy picture, it is unlikely to rain from them, a little drizzle at most. Stratus clouds are identical to fog, so if you've ever walked in a mountainous area on a foggy day, you've been inside a cloud.

5) Lenticular clouds. Smooth and lenticular lenticular clouds form when air is blown up and over a mountain range, and as it travels over a mountain, the air descends to its previous level. At this time, it heats up and the cloud evaporates. But it can slip further, as a result of which the air rises again and forms another lenticular cloud. This can result in a chain of clouds extending far beyond the mountain range. The interaction of wind with mountains and other surface features is one of the many details that must be taken into account in computer simulations to obtain accurate weather predictions.

6) Kelvin - Helmholtz like a breaking ocean wave. When air masses at different heights move horizontally at different speeds, their state becomes unstable. The boundary between the air masses begins to ripple and form large waves, such clouds are quite rare.

Pasterze Glacier

The Pasterze, at approximately 8.4 kilometres (5.2 mi) in length, is the longest glacier in Austria and in the Eastern Alps. It lies within the Glockner Group of the High Tauern mountain range in Carinthia, directly beneath Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner. The length of the glacier is currently decreasing by about 50 m (160 ft) each year. Its volume has diminished by half since the first measurements in 1851.

Unsociable and fierce, the Kingfisher devotes a large part of his days to monitoring the territory. It is most often observed whirling around, with a direct flight like a scintillating arrow, above the water, often stopping on favorite perches to visit its fishing grounds. Motionless on its perch, it scans the surface of the body of water, patiently waiting for prey to present itself favorably.

Half of the red tulips look red-yellow because of midday sunlight falling directly on the red tulips. Overall appearance is beautiful !

Instead of driving directly from Abbeville to Blonville Sur Mer we made a side trip to visit Jumièges Abbey. I am glad we did it's a remarkable ruin that sits in one of the bends of the River Seine west of Rouen . I particularly liked the delicate towers that reminded me of buildings I have seen it Italy . It has quite a history too.

The abbey was founded in 654 on a gift of forested land belonging to the royal family presented by Clovis II and his queen, Balthild. Under the second abbot, Saint Achard, Jumièges prospered and soon numbered nearly a thousand monks.

In the ninth century it was pillaged and burnt to the ground by the Vikings, but was rebuilt on a grander scale by William Longespee, Duke of Normandy. A new church was consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Enjoying the patronage of the dukes of Normandy, the abbey became a great centre of religion and learning, its schools producing, amongst many other scholars, the national historian, William of Jumièges. It reached the zenith of its fame about the eleventh century, and was regarded as a model for all the monasteries of the province.

The church was enlarged in 1256, and again restored in 1573.

The fortunes of the abbey suffered somewhat through the English invasion of the fifteenth century, but it recovered and maintained its prosperity and high position until the whole province was devastated by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion.

The French Revolution, ended its existence as a monastery, leaving only impressive ruins. These comprise the church, with its beautiful twin towers and western façade, and portions of the cloisters and library, the contents of which were removed to Rouen when the abbey was dissolved. In the middle of the former cloister, there is still a 500-year-old yew tree.

The morning fog had burned off the valley as I headed east on CA 58 towards Tehachapi, Bakersfield behind me. I wasn't sure how this would come out, the sun was above and directly in front of me, so bumped up the contrast and used my slightly tented windshield and fast shutter to reduce the brightness. Also luck to find one of the few spots on this steep climb big enough to pull my rig off the roadway.

Mornos Lake is an artificial lake having been constructed so as another reservoir to be created for covering the growing needs for the water supply in Athens. It was created in 1979 by constructing a dam in Mornos River. The total area of the lake, which corresponds to its average level, is about 15.5 square kilometers, making it the ninth largest artificial lake in Greece.

The lake is located in the center of Fokida prefecture, covering with its water a basin to the west of Lidoriki, formed between the mountains Giona and Vardousia. It collects water not only from Mornos River but also from its tributaries, which flow directly into the lake. The most important of them is Kokkinopotamos, which stems from Vardousia mountain. Mornos Lake takes also water from Evinos Lake through a tunnel that was constructed for this purpose.

False Creek is a short inlet in the heart of Vancouver. It separates downtown from the rest of the city. It was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856-63. George Richards named False Creek during his survey of the coast in the mid-19th century. While traveling along the south side of the Burrard Inlet, he thought he was traversing a creek; upon discovering his error, he gave the waterway its modern name. Wikipedia

The caves run deep into the hillside above West Wycombe village and directly beneath St Lawrence's Church and Mausoleum (which were also constructed by Sir Francis Dashwood around the same time the caves were excavated). West Wycombe Park, ancestral seat of the Dashwood family and also a National Trust property, lies directly across the valley. The caves' striking entrance, designed as the façade of a mock gothic church and built from flint and chalk mortar, which was erected in around 1752, can be viewed directly from West Wycombe House.

After a fire destroyed the original lodge in the winter of 1962, the two original lifts were removed in the 1970s. The BC government funded a new lodge on the ridge and an aerial tramway to the mountaintop from the valley below.

In 1976, new ownership funded a second aerial tramway, built by Garaventa, known as the Red Tram or Super Skyride which is one on the right. The larger tram cars (for about 100 passengers) arrive at a separate top terminal building a short walk from the lodge. The older Blue Tram, on the left, is now mainly used to transport supplies directly to the lodge structure.

"Belted Kingfishers spend much of their time perched alone along the edges of streams, lakes, and estuaries, searching for small fish. They also fly quickly up and down rivers and shorelines giving loud rattling calls. They hunt either by plunging directly from a perch, or by hovering over the water, bill downward, before diving after a fish they’ve spotted."

A poignant memorial of the atomic bomb on 6th August 1945. Because the explosion was almost directly overhead, the building was able to retain its shape. I shot this photo from directly underneath the central tower in Lincoln Cathedral, England. It looks almost like a painting on the ceiling but, if you look closely, you can see the double rows of internal arches and the vaults that hold up the roof of the tower.

Although the building of the cathedral started in 1072, the current central tower dates from the 13th century following the collapse of the original tower in 1237. Between 1307 and 1311 the central tower was raised to its present height of 271 feet (83 m). At this time, a tall lead-encased wooden spire topped the tower but this was blown down in a storm in 1548. With its spire, the tower reputedly reached a height of 525 feet (160 m) which would have made it the world's tallest structure at the time, surpassing the Great Pyramid of Giza, which had held the record for almost 4,000 years.

Schloss Favorite is a Baroque maison de plaisance and hunting lodge in Ludwigsburg, Germany and was used as a summer residence and hunting lodge. It is located on a rise, directly north of Ludwigsburg Palace and connected via an avenue to it.

Schloss Favorite was built from 1717 to 1723 for the sovereign Duke of Württemberg, Eberhard Ludwig, to a design by Donato Giuseppe Frisoni. The model was the Gartenpalais in Vienna.[1] The original plan provided for combining the functions of a hunting castle, surrounded by a vast park and hunting grounds, and a country villa with a beautiful view. In 1748, it served as a backdrop for a grandiose firework display arranged on the occasion of the wedding of Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg and Princess Margravine Elisabeth Fredericka Sophie of Brandenburg-Bayreuth.

From 1806, King Frederick I of Württemberg converted the park into a ménagerie, containing wild boar, deer and chamois, and the house was used as a hunting lodge. At much the same time, the architect Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret renovated the building's interior in the neoclassical style.

With the fall of the monarchy in the 20th century, the house was little used, neglected and fell into disrepair. It was restored from 1980 onward, and it opened to the public in 1983. The park has been transformed into a landscape garden, which has since served as an animal park. Today, the originally furnished castle rooms give an insight into courtly life
