A shot of myself looking out along the coast whilst perusing the pleasures of Goa's glorious beaches. I had to play with this quite a lot in post processing to stop it looking like a holiday snap - but I think the end result is far better than the beginning product.
This giant ball of fingering weight yarn USED to be 15 inches of my Plum Frost Cardigan body until I realized I had been reading the directions for the PULLOVER. Kinda important to include the STEEK stitches. Fuck.
Technical Aspects:
Low-Key, cat sitting in the grass.
Time of day-Afternoon 6pm MST
Direction: West
Quality of light- Late afternoon daylight
Composition strategy:
Angle of view background elements- Pointed straight ahead and slightly downward in a shadowed patch of grass, highlighting the contrast of the lighter fur on my cat with the darker shadowed background.
Type of Composition- Horizontal
Content/Audience:
Intended message/emotion- Low-key concept, showing uniformity and harmony in composition by having the focal point be the lighter contrast of my cat's fur and the darker background to emphasize the dark shadows in the shadowed patch of grass the cat is laying on.
Intricacies of Process/Application:
My thought process behind this photo was to show the "Low-Key" concept. Playing around with the histogram for these photos was challenging but fun. I really enjoyed making adjustments with exposure and different angles to find the right amount of dark/light contrast to emphasize the low-key details. I found low-key to be much easier to take than high key, since the adjustments to dark to emphasize the shadows was easier to accomplish. I feel this photo best represents the concept of low-key as the shadows are emphasized heavily in this photo with the cat's white fur acting as a focal point/white contrast to emphasize the dark shadows in the photo.

Also known as Leffrinckoucke Fort, this imposing battery is a late 19th century coastal fortification constructed to defend the nearby port of Dunkirk from the east. As with many forts of the time, by the time construction was complete the yellow brick fort had been outgunned by developments in artillery.
The fort did not see any action in WW1, but when the evacuation of allied forces during Operation Dynamo occured in 1940, the fort became a safe haven and subsequently a target for German bombing.
The next major phase in the forts life, and the last, was the rapid expansion by the German Todt organisation as they constructed the vast Atlantic Wall. This phase saw the consctruction of concrete emplacements, blockhouses and a regeneration of the fort living quarters.
The fort was partially destroyed by the Canadians at the end of WW2, and has since been left to deteriorate. It is in public land and as such can be explored. The scale of the site has to be seen to be appreciated.
