With the colder temps and snowy weather, the crowds have diminished from the desert - temporarily. After a year of not venturing far from home, I've recently visited places that would normally be devoid of vehicle tracks and even footprints that are now are rutted with off-trail meanders created by wheeled, pedaled and pedestrian travelers.

Instead of whining and complaining and blaming, I choose to find my photographic art in the everyday patterns of desert detritus.

The Elks Lodge

138 State Street, west of the Wellington, the Elks Lodge No. 49 was built between 1911–13 and dedicated in 1914

The Wellington :

The person who most shaped the Wellington was Claude J. Holder (1876-1950), who purchased the original 17 room hotel in 1911 and expanded it to over 400 rooms with a "built-in garage". In 1959, business was still good enough for Carter Hotels to pay Holding's heirs $1,500,000 for the hotel under a contract which obligated the purchaser to provide a television set and air conditioning in every room. Although the appeal of lodging downtown was already diminishing, the Wellington stayed open until the mid-1980s.

Some time ago when we were in Vancouver, BC, I wanted to capture this artistic structure. Hours around it and literally a hundred shots from all angles, this is one of two finalists. The silver metal table and chairs were a strong eye catching element I wanted surrounded with the red "rings" of diminishing size. It could still be better so when we again visit Vancouver, there is a challenge in mind. The second finalist will be posted tomorrow.

Houx Island is a Belgian island located on the Meuse upstream of the village of the same name, near Yvoir. A plantation of Canadian poplars was carried out there; the banks are entirely stony.

During the Battle of France, it was by using the island of Houx, which was connected to the left bank of the Meuse by lock No. 4 and to the left bank by a dam carrying a footbridge, that the Germans of the 5th Panzerdivision of Max von Hartlieb-Walsporn crossed the Meuse on May 12, 1940 by simple infiltrations, and in force the next day at dawn despite the defense of the II/39th infantry regiment (commander Cadennes) in liaison with the III/129th infantry regiment (commander Migaud) supported by artillery.

The dam had not been destroyed by the French so as not to lower the course of the Meuse upstream where its defensive interest would have been diminished.

Death cannot diminish your elegance.

No man is an island,

Entire of itself,

Every man is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thy friend's

Or of thine own were:

Any man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind,

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

The diminished sun rays through the darkening storm clouds gave this scene a surreal painterly feel. How is it that maple groves always look so neat and tidy? Even with the fallen leaves it has a natural order to it.

The only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower standing on the bridge. Such bridge towers were common across Europe from medieval times, but many were destroyed due to urban expansion, diminishing defensive requirements and the increasing demands of traffic and trade. The historical and architectural importance of the bridge and its rarity are reflected in its status as a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building. The bridge crosses the River Monnow (Afon Mynwy) 500 metres (1,600 ft) above its confluence with the River Wye.

Monmouth had been a significant border settlement since the Roman occupation of Britain, when it was the site of the fort of Blestium. The River Wye may have been bridged at this time but the Monnow, being easily fordable, appears not to have had a crossing until after the Norman Conquest. According to the local tradition, construction of Monnow Bridge began in 1272 to replace a 12th-century Norman timber bridge. Through the medieval era, the English Civil War, and the Chartist uprising, the bridge played a significant, if ineffectual, role in defending Monmouth. It also served as a gaol, a munitions store, a lodge, an advertising hoarding, a focus for celebrations and, most significantly, as a toll gate. Much of the medieval development of Monmouth was funded by the taxes and tolls the borough was entitled to raise through royal charter. The tolls were collected through control of the points of entry to the town, including the gatehouse on Monnow Bridge.

Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space. It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe. It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished......Michael Strassfeld

Perhaps this is the nature of life. With greater experience comes a diminished sense of fantasy. However, one can reconcile the hardships of reality with genuine happiness.

It's the first time I saw a stonechat perching on stones.

Even the everyday flower the crops up unbidden along the sidewalk or at the edge of a woodland trail, has an elegant structure and a beauty that is not diminished by being commonplace. All that diminishes is our ability to notice. And that is renewable.

It has been a few weeks since I posted a wildlife set, so it's time. Although variety of species present is vastly diminished when fall arrives and cooler weather takes over, there's still a lot fo photograph in Grasslands.

Most of the images to follow were shot this year, in October, November, or December. Due to relatively mild temperatures and the great light we get at this time of year, I've been out there a lot, and have a lot of new wildlife shots to share - starting with this bull bison making its way across a field of dry, yellow grass.

Unless I make changes, there will be nine mammal species and eight bird species in this set. It isn't a complete inventory of what's here, but a good indication. Stay tuned...

Dark storm clouds overhead didn't diminish the display of affection between these two Tundra Swans. This year half way through the winter she found a mate in this brash, expressive young male to her left.

early summer extreme heat is greatly diminishing the million bells.

Not even the stormiest day can diminish the beauty of the Fall colours.

I'm catching up on some shots I took last month, starting with this early one on a day when I was blessed with foggy conditions from dawn til dusk. I was so absorbed in the atmosphere that day that I completely lost track of time!

It was extremely foggy. I could barely focus earlier in the morning. This photo was after it began to diminish, believe it or not, almost two hours after my first attempts of the morning.

A month has gone by already of my year-long one-a- day project. I'm trying to learn and use new techniques and not bore you too much with the subject matter. This is this morning's image taken at St Michael's Mount, Marazion of the boat landing jetty.

Cistern Spring and Steamboat Geyser are linked underground. During a major eruption of Steamboat, the water in Cistern Spring's pool drains a few inches or more. Normally, Cistern is a beautiful blue pool from which water continually overflows. Cistern Spring's influence expands throughout the lodgepole pine forest below. The lodgepole pine forest at the Norris Basin is in constant flux, advancing in places of diminished thermal activity and retreating in areas of increasing heat.

A tree rat basically, foraging for the crumbs I left on our balcony in the hope of attracting a nice duet of Robins. Having said that the Robin is well known in the avian world for being a vicious little b@stard.

The squirrel is now a regular customer, making the super leap from a nearby tree and landing less than gracefully onto the balcony.

Cute and less nervous than the birds, he and I shared a Maryland Cookie 🍪 ... then I remembered the bloody things are vermin and covered in fleas and ticks. The squirrel not the cookie.

Maybe it’s time for the egg and 2 forks pic?

It was built as a court house, but its use as a judicial building has diminished over the years, as the needs of the county changed, but is still owned by the county council.

Reaching for the diminishing light as late summer turns toward early autumn. The air is crisp, the morning dew more apparent, the light changing ever so slowly as we move away rom the hazy days of summer into the cool damp mornings of autumn.

New development will take place all around these old oaks. They may survive, but in a seriously diminished ecosystem, with no possibility of continuing as a forest.
