One of the scenarios that caught Avany Franca's attention during a recent visit to South Korea was the number of the active elderly people on the streets. As many other countries the demographic challenging has been a latent issue, but in Korea it is even more delicate as the rapid economy growth and the changes in society have not included the ageing group. With a very fragile social service, a nonexistent pension system and, with the youth leaving home earlier to better opportunities, following the energetic country success, not much is left to focus on the care of the elderly.
As consequence, the number of depressed older patients caused by social isolation, self-negligence and little interactions with others has increased dramatically. With the intention to minimizing the risk of the vulnerable group, Korean government is taking advanced of ETRI-Activity3D technology, a long-term monitoring camera system to help improve the quality of medical service, and to monitoring the daily life of older Koreans living in isolation and vulnerable situation.
