Teaching with Video Workshop: Featuring MediaThread [DF; W]
Jonah Bossewitch (Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning)
Michael Preston (Dept. of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Readiness, Columbia University)
Mark Phillipson (Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning)
In this workshop we will review the basic principles, advantages, and pitfalls of teaching with video. The session will feature MediaThread, a web-based multimedia annotation and composition platform developed at Columbia University to support critical scholarship based on multimedia sources. Participants in this workshop will learn how they can use MediaThread or similar annotation tools to deepen analysis of rich media, such as streaming video from various sources on the web. Various curricular models and strategies for the effective use of tools like MediaThread in the classroom and beyond will be explored. Participants will build multimedia compositions based on videos we collectively annotate and analyze, and share results.
This is how I envisioned my inner-world. The background is a distorted image of a gallery (metaphor for order and love of art), bottom left (books and the Rosetta stone) symbolizes knowledge and translation. Bottom right represents spiritual and artistic sense as well as the perception of our own mortality. Top left, symbolizes past innovations for peace and war whereas top right is a metaphor for future through space exploration and biochemistry. All of this is tied in my three most important activities for this course: listening, seeing and communicating (both text and binary are involved here).
I only used original pictures (taken by myself) because I didn't want to worry about copyright (I still don't get all the nuances and layers).
Please, take a minute to consider and vote for my interpretation <3

Learning with Mobile x Printed Media Day 1 of 2
Federico Casalegno (MIT)
Orkan Telhan (UPenn, School of Design)
This workshop explores alternative models of learning using mobile media and paper-based interfaces that are augmented with computational and electronic capabilities. It intends to span new research investigations in critical cartography, citizen science, and civic media practices. Participants will be able to have hands on experience with mobile phones and paper-based media and be supported to think towards critical applications that can augment learning experiences using alternative forms of video and low-cost, massively-deployable interfaces. The workshop will use a custom mobile video sharing platform designed by MIT Mobile Experience Laboratory and will work with printed interactive media designed at the Emerging Design Practices Laboratory of University of Pennsylvania. The workshop sessions will be organized around different topics and will be facilitated as design charrettes with ideation, application development, prototyping, and presentation meetings. No prior technical skills will be required to participate in the workshop.
We have adopted the new phase of learning with the emergence of the Internet and technology. The transformation in the education sector demands digital learning by replacing books, notebooks, posters and hard copy documents with the websites and applications. Digital Learning is becoming a standard part of the classroom teaching and learning experience. Its various forms include blended learning, virtual schools, online courses, etc., but they all have the same goal to strengthen a student’s learning experience and improve educational outcomes. The learning is facilitated by technology that gives students some element of control over time, place and path. It is the key concept that needs to be embraced by educators in today’s classrooms. Introducing Empires & Interconnections, the newest edition in the award-winning History Adventures digital book series, whose accolades include a 2019 Horizon Interactive Award for Best Education App.
This fully interactive, animated digital learning product represents a fresh approach to history education, designed for today’s digital generation.
History Adventures: Empires & Interconnections (1450-1750) combines the latest in mobile entertainment with the power of narrative design—bringing the pages of history to life.
An Age of Exploration, Gunpowder, and International Trade
During this period of colossal change, from 1450-1750, the world got smaller. The age of exploration, gunpowder, and international trade took hold, like never before. Epic empires expanded, and followed trade routes–as European nations battled to control as much of the world’s wealth as possible. The dark side of this explosion of wealth and consolidated power and influence, meant enslavement and ruin for some, as Europeans unknowingly brought diseases that killed millions and meanwhile initiated the gruesome, inhumane Atlantic Slave Trade. Some nations remained autonomous and isolated, such as the Tokugawa of Japan–but this took huge effort to throw off this tide of increasing global interconnectedness.
For Empires & Interconnections, we have developed 6 new characters–each of whom confronts the core question: how to deal with this tidal sweep of rising empires, will they fold into this interconnectedness, or will they somehow resist?
Created by Spencer Striker, PhD
Digital Media Design Professor at Northwestern University in Qatar

Digital and online learning uses rhizomatic patterns (going from link-to-link in ever-expanding nodes) vastly different from hierarchical learning from top-to-bottom, or bottom-to-top. See: Online Literacy, Textual Learning and Thinking.
Learning is more scattered and less linear.
Textual manuscripts were the beginning of the rise of individual knowledge and the minimizing of community learning.
