In the Typography course, Digital Design students are asked to "bring the characteristics of a typeface to life". Karen Poon chose Caslon Pro, a typeface created by William Caslon back in the 1700's. He created the typeface with short ascenders and descenders promoting a high contrast shape of the letters. Karen felt this contrast created a a neutral typeface that was perfect for telling stories. And what do most stories have in common?” The narrative arch — exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement.
To make this typeface more tangible, Karen laser cut wood letters to make them tactile. She then positioned them as props in natural settings to bring her narrative to life.

The theme of our recent Digital Design Talks was melange — a mix of all that is wonderful and inspirational. The student team of Magda Else Becker, Lina Zhao and Feryal Khawar beautifully presented an overview of their Interactive Design 2 course project, Sooul — an experiential site for circus-inspired training — and revealed their rigorous design process. Perry Chua (http://www.perrychua.com), branding and design expert extraordinaire, delivered an extremely motivating speech on visualization.

As part of the team building component of Term 1 Project Management, students are given a box of dollar store objects and a mission: keep a marble moving along a course for as long a time as possible, with it ending up falling into an egg cup. Armed with plastic necklaces, dominoes, bendy straws, a roll of toilet tissue and other priceless objects, teams compete to create the best design to meet the goal. Upon completion, the teams analyze their designs for strengths and weaknesses and process key team dynamic components — How were design decisions made? How were disagreements resolved? How was leadership determined? Did team members contribute equally to the vision and how did they each fare when it came to implementation?

And Peter Gikandi of Microsoft's gaming division, Big Park (www.bigpark.com), blew our minds by creating a dynamic character in real time.

If you’re Digital Design instructor Myron Campbell, you turn those ingredients into Vancouver’s only bi-monthly drawing party. At Draw By Night, artists can work collaboratively on pieces, or by themselves on their own section. The only emphasis is on getting everyone drawing. Participants are encouraged to use Twitter or other social media to discuss the event and post pictures, allowing real-time engagement with the drawing community. They can also post ideas and comments that are often integrated into the next event.

The design industry is built upon the principles of composition and storytelling across all media. More and more, the lines of traditional mediums are blurring. As such, designers who understand mixed-media ideation are in high demand. This term 6 course focuses on the combination of digital and analogue techniques to efficiently produce stop motion animation for compelling narratives. This course is built on the principles of teamwork, organization, and experimentation; students work in teams, while contributing to a single class project.

Felipe and Luis chose to create an engaging online experience for a faux soccer team called the Razor Dragons.

For the Communication Design 2 course, students are asked to design the cover and interior of a famous book in the public domain. Arcelia Ocana chose to visually tell the story of Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days. She used text from the book to illustrate a portrait of the author himself for the cover.

The theme of our recent Digital Design Talks was originality — a mix of all that is wonderful and inspirational. Tim Shetz, a designer and instructor from San Francisco, started the talk with the topic, ‘Be An Originator, Not a Duplicator’. Then, our student, Dalhi Guzman Inzunza, presented his paintings and unique graphic compositions done at VFS. Finally, Boca (Marcos) Ceravolo, our alumni who specializes in motion, showed the students his latest project, ‘MTV Brazil’s 2011 VMB’.

VFS Digital Design welcomed Alex Beim, CEO and Creative Director of Tangible Interactions recently to speak at a Digital Design Assembly.
The theme of the evening was "tactile" and it featured several Digital Design students and grads presenting their projects. Alex Beim, CEO/Creative Director from Tangible Interactions presented a special talk about projects that are both multi-touch in their behaviour and "touching" in the way they connect with audiences.

In Term 3, Digital Design students visit multiple agencies to learn more about the type of professional environments in which they'd like to work upon graduation. It’s an amazing opportunity for budding designers to see how our industry operates and provides context as they choose their electives and start planning their post-grad careers. Interactive agency, Habañero Consulting, provided an amazing tour.

As part of the Term 5 elective, Experimental 2D Graphics, we spend one entire class in a room with no computers. We bring all sorts of materials together like paint, magazines, pencils, markers, and glue. Each student uses all these materials to create hand-made textures to scan-in for later use in their digital work.
This exercise is one of many that suggests that not all answers to visual problems lie behind your computer screen. Sometimes you need to get your hands dirty!

Myron Campbell, an instructor in Digital Design and a big part of the VFS community, has been named Interactive Designer of the Year at the 2010 Canadian New Media Awards!
Myron is an accomplished designer whose recent work has included (as then-art director at Switch Interactive) attention-grabbing interactive installations at this year’s Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

For her graduate project, Marija Vidanovic developed a unique accordion news-magazine called ‘Flip’ that allows young urban professionals to quickly flip through daily headlines. This novel, eco-friendly solution eliminates the need of glue and staples.

For her graduate project, Melody Teichroeb wanted to break down the barriers separating design schools and empower students to build a design community. She created Connexion, a magazine that enables students to gain insights into what students and professionals are doing, learn valuable tips and tricks, connect with other students, and build networks.

In the Branding 1 course, students are challenged with positioning a new or re-branded product in a crowded marketplace. Through research and analysis, each student develops a strategy and concept, the logo and all of the assets for various applications of their brand.
With his project 'Skewers', JL Lum developed the concept and brand for a modern and hip approach to "street meat".

Simon Vieira's graduate project, Diligo, is a social change website that allows people to collaborate, socialize, and invest together in ideas that will change the world in a positive way. The site enables individuals to post an initiative and have the public rate it. The higher the rating, the more exposure the initiative gets.
The branding effort for this project included the identity itself, the brand guidelines booklet, packaging, advertising, stationary and the website itself.
