Turn out the reason this camera wouldn't power up is because the plastic tab on the door switch was broken off. As far as it was concerned, the battery door was always open.

Lunch at Karen's yesterday, noticed that, well yes, as this is a house full of children,
and no, not everything is quite the right way round... Plus, their house is being renovated.
I tell Karen, 'tumhari mat maaree gae hai!', that she's 'lost a few of her marbles,' since the kids came along...
She just sadly nods, yes...
This is a comically big digital camera. It is a current model SONY camera made for taking passport photos. It comes bundled with a printer that instantly prints via Bluetooth from the camera and the whole set retails around $1500. You really cant understand the ridiculousness of the size of this camera without being there however. The model number is the UPX-C200 you can see pictures of the kit here.
You can tell that Munich is a wealthy place by the sheer number of department and designer stores in the city. Apparently the place is a popular shopping haunt for nouveau riche Russians. (According to some locals we talked to)
