This was in Louisiana when the Ant Lab at LSU was commissioned by a British TV show to dig up a leaf cutter ant nest. This species, Atta texana, is the only one that occurs in North America and Louisiana is the leaf cutter ant's most northern range.
Here the leaves are macerated into bits and the white fuzz is the fungus which the ant then will eat. The symbiosis is strict and complex.
Fender enjoys the game too! We've always played it with Sophie, where you toss a rock into the water and they have to stick their head under water and find it. And now Fender plays it too! He loves it.
