Sono trascorsi 60 anni da quando, quella sera alle 22.39, dopo giorni di pioggia incessante, una frana si staccò dal monte Toc e scivolò dentro all'invaso creato artificialmente con lo sbarramento della diga per produrre energia elettrica. Un volume di circa 270 milioni di m³ di roccia creò così un'onda che si elevò fino a 250 metri di altezza e scavalcò la diga. 25 milioni di m³ di acqua si diressero verso valle alla velocità di 100 km/h. Oltre la diga, la Città di Longarone (BL) venne distrutta in pochi attimi causando la morte di 1.910 persone.

60 years have passed since, that evening at 10.39pm, after days of incessant rain, a landslide broke away from Mount Toc and slid into the reservoir artificially created with the dam to produce electricity. A volume of approximately 270 million m³ of rock thus created a wave that rose up to 250 meters high and went over the dam. 25 million m³ of water headed downstream at a speed of 100 km/h. Beyond the dam, the city of Longarone (BL) was destroyed in a few moments, causing the death of 1,910 people.
Non è una diga enorme, ma fa comunque moltissima impressione soprattutto pensando alla forza enorme che deve contenere.

The Gleno disaster of 1 December 1923 was a catastrophic event caused by the structural failure of the recently completed Gleno dam, in Val di Scalve, in the Orobie Alps.
Valle Cairasca. Piemonte, Italy.
The small dam of Davino reservoir at 2,234m above the sea. This small dam has been built in 1918 A.C. to rise the water of an already existing small lake. The name Davino comes from "d' arvina", that in italian means "from the ruins". The actual capacity of the reservoir is 6.5 millions of cubic meters.
It is worth to remember that, to build this small dam, 33,000 cubic meters of rock have been fragmented and transported here by mules, starting from the village of Varzo, 1,7000 meter below.

La diga del Gleno era uno sbarramento sul torrente Gleno che il 1º dicembre del 1923 crollò, causando un'immane tragedia che sconvolse la Valle di Scalve.

One of my very first photo from 2007 with an old digital camera. This is the Gleno dam, from Valle di Scalve, Bergamo, Italy. Is an old dam, constructed between 1916 and 1924. Tragically it collapse only 40 days after its reservoir was full killing at least 350 people. My grandfather and my grandmother were living in a small village under the dam, the firs village destroyed by the water.
Behind the dam you can see the Presolana Mountain.
