In October 1980 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of cessation of trolleybus operation in Walsall 862 was driven through the streets of Walsall powered by a trailer diesel generator.
In the cab as a passenger is the former Walsall Corporation manager Mr R Edgley-Cox who designed this trolleybus - a 70 seater weighing just 7.25 tons unladen

Hver første lørdag i måneden, starter entusiaster denne monstrøse B&W dieselgenerator på Thomas B. Thrige kraftcentralen i Odense.

Walkers Mill Shelley, Victoria, Aust. c 1965.
My sister Vernice Parkinson, (RIP), now know by her married name, Vernice Heber, milking, Carmen, the Goat, at Walkers Mill, near Shelley, Vic, Aust.
Beside her is my one year younger than me, brother, Andrew Parkinson. I couldn't tell if it was him, but others have said it is. He would be about 8 years old at this time.
This Goat died, my mother suspected it might have been poisoned by our neighbours, who knows, I can only say that the death of that Goat meant a reduction in food, that's how critical things were at that stage of our lives. But things actually got worse when we went down to Berringama. You can tell by the photo what our living conditions were like.
It was after going to Berringama, that in 1966, the police came for us in several cars, took us to Corryong, then Vernice app 13, was taken by Police Car to Wangaratta, locked in the cells for the night, then was then taken to Allambie. My younger brother Gerald 8, Andrew 10, me, Murray 11, the twins, Kenny & Rodney app 16, my Father, I think about 46, were all loaded into the back of a Police Divvy Van, also called a Dog Box, and were taken on a Journey of over 500 kms, us Children into "Care," and our Father to Coburg Prison, for debt of app 34 Dollars he owed to the Taxation Dept. Just an excuse to get him out of the way so we could be taken into "Care."
The stopped the on the way down and fuelled at Wodonga Police Station, as it had Petrol Bowsers, they parked outside the station while they changed over or had a cuppa and people looked in at us, It was embarrassing, they then took us to Wangaratta, where we were allowed out to stretch our legs, they then took us to Melbourne, it was dark when we got there and and they stopped somewhere, threw in some chips, wrapped in newspaper, then took my brother Gerald to Allambie, then Andrew & Me, to Turana, then Kenny & Rodney to another part of Turana, then my old Man to Coburg Prison, where he stayed till he could earn enough to afford the money to send a letter to his Dad. Granddad was away down Gippsland way, but when he finally got the letter, he came to Melbourne and bailed our father out.
We were later all put in a home in Ballarat, allegedly so we could all be together, but we weren't we were separated by age and sex. So really we didn't see much of each other.
Our Father became ill and died of Cancer, 2 years after we were taken away from him, he only saw us and we only saw him a few times before he died. They did let us go down to the funeral, that was big of them.
Walkers Mill Shelley was actually located app 10 K's out of Shelley on the Shelley to Walwa and Jingellic Road, Walwa is in Victoria and Jingellic is just over the border in NSW.
There used to a clearing there with lots of machinery bits, old rail parts that were used to move the timber into the saws and out to the stacking area. But Hancock Pine Plantations take up every little bit of space or clearing to plant their pine trees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This bit was in the comments section, I copied it and pasted it here, as it should be part of the description,
One copper said we lived in 70 year old Farm House with no electricity connected, TRUE, and no running water, just one tap in an out building, supplied by a rainwater tank, TRUE, he reckoned the place had an earthen floor, NOT true, it may have been out back & pathways, but there was a wooden floor in bedrooms, family room, kitchen, & bedrooms. A lot other things were true, won't go into details here.
One funny thing is he described the place has have a fridge, (there was no power connected), he said it contained three Rabbits legs, I was thinking of having a family gathering to find out who ate the other one. It could also be that there is a very old, wise rabbit up there hopping about on one leg.
I was a very scared, small, dirty, hungry, 11 year old boy, but a Copper described me a being various things, including, being filthy, insolent, uses bad language, is going to grow up to be a menace to society, the boy is a competent liar. .... The state I was in as 11 year old boy was not really my fault, but I deny most of the behavioural description of me, I certainly am no liar, as a matter of fact, the person who looked after me basically 24/7 at Ballarat, said in reports, "The boy couldn't lie to save himself." As result of what that copper said, and other issues, me & Andrew were sent to Turana Lock Up, instead of Allambie. And while some boys were like us, a lot were very tough, street wise kids. The staff were also very tough men, some where ex soldiers who fought in WW2, one dropped me for laughing out loud, it must got on his nerve, he just swung around & dropped me, I was sick for 2 weeks. I now realise, he would have regretted that, I think, but I only come to that conclusion in recent times. I was still sick at times at Ballarat, I still get bad headaches to this day.
The location of the Saw Mill is here on the opposite side of the road to the large Dam, bounded by Shelly - Jingelic Rd and the diagonal road, the large Dam was not there when we were living there, just a very small one and a series of very small ponds that dried up sometimes.
In this street view is the approximate location of the house we lived in. It is about where the clump of trees are on the left. The Mill was located behind that location running basically in a Nth & Sth direction, behind where the house we lived in was. From memory, there was three other houses and the mill and a foreman's office. . www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.1305863,147.5909119,3a,75y,14...
RET heeft twee hybride bussen rondrijden. De twee gelede hybride bussen van zijn van het merk Mercedes Citaro. Ze worden aangedreven door elektromotoren in de wielnaven, waardoor ze altijd elektrisch (op accu) rijden. De accu wordt geladen door remenergie en door een kleine dieselgenerator. Deze generator slaat alleen aan als de accu moet worden opgeladen. De verwachting is dat de hybride bussen 25 tot 30 procent diesel zal besparen (ten opzichte van een gewone dieselbus).
Im August war es soweit: Transcontainer und RZD Logistics verabschiedeten ihren ersten Kühlzug mit sechs 40-Fuss-Kühlcontainer vom chinesischen Dalian in Richtung des Moskauer Bahnhofs Orekhovo-Zuevo. Der Grenzübergang von China nach Russland erfolgt über Manzhouli / Zabaikalsk. Geladen sind Obst und Gemüse wie Knoblauch, Birnen und Pampelmusen. Damit bieten beide eine Tür-zu-Tür-Lieferung an, die besonders schnell erfolgen soll: eine längere Lagerung und der Umschlag der Waren sollen vermieden werden.
Photo: Railway Gazette
Beim ersten Güterzug dieser Art nach Moskau rechnen die Betreiber mit einer Transportdauer von 18 bis 20 Tagen, im Laufe der Zeit soll dies auf 12 Tage sinken. Zum Vergleich: ein Transport per Schiff dauert im Schnitt rund dreimal so lange. Um die Qualität der Waren während eines solch langen Transportweges zu gewährleiten, muss gekühlt werden: Ein Dieselgenerator versorgt die Kühlcontainer während der Fahrt mit der notwendigen Energie. Erst jetzt ist ein Transport von Obst und Gemüse per Kühlwaggon möglich, da die entsprechende Technik seit kurzem in China verfügbar ist, erklärt Alexander Baskakov, stellvertretender Vertriebsleiter der RZD Logistics.
Künftig sollen drei bis vier Güterzüge, die aus acht Kühlwaggons bestehen, mit Obst und Gemüse wöchentlich von China in Richtung Moskau rollen. Der Service wird auch für pharmazeutische und elektronische Produkte angeboten.
Petbow Ltd was a British company that specialised in the design and manufacture of diesel powered generators as well as mobile DC welding units. During its lifetime, they also manufactured vehicle and aircraft engines as well as the Frisky microcar (1958-1961). Petbow founded in 1928 was based at Sandwich in Kent and in 1986 bought over by the MIR Trading Company of Bangladesh. In 1994 Petbow was sold to the American multinational engineering company of Cummins Inc and today, Petbow Generators Ltd remains a subsidiary of Cummins.
Cummins Ltd was founded in 1919 and is a global engineering company that specialises in the design and manufacture of diesel engines and related technologies. They also distribute and service their products as well. Cummins currently has around 5,000 facilities worldwide in 197 countries worldwide.
If anyone has more information about Petbow, I’d be delighted to hear from you.
Thank you for reading.
After dropping Laura off at work this morning I headed out to an unusual venue for me, Bootle Strand.
I was going to look at at a piece of furniture in the British Heart Foundation shop, but it opened at half nine, and I was there at nine.
That game me time for a quick spin around the block where I happened across this slightly unusal view.
This seems to be the backyard of a firm that supplies these huge semi-permanent generators. They're not than unusual a sight, but it is unusual to see them in a state of undress.
It's not hard to guess what's in them - a fuel tank, a diesel engine which is almost certainly from a car, an alternator to produce current and some transformers and electrical switching. Here in the yellow box on the left we can see what looks like each of those in turn, running right to left.
Behind the yellow generator we've got a white one in an even further state of undress which gives us a cracking view of the engine which does indeed look just like something you'd see under the bonnet of a van.
Not a pretty sight, but for me at least, an interesting one.
ETA: It's not a car engine! This generator in the front is an Atlas Copco QAS38, and that uses a Yanmar 4TNE98-ACG engine. Yanmar are a Japanese diesel engine manufacturer specialising in industrial and marine diesels...which fits. :)
A Marine Systems Engineer repairs a diesel generator on board Her Majesty's Canadian Ship FREDERICTON during exercises with Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) ships in the Black Sea on Operation REASSURANCE, March 6, 2015.
Operation REASSURANCE is Canada’s contribution to NATO-led assurance measures that promote security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe.
Stad Kassel, Land Hessen (D)
De RegionalTram RT4 naar Wolfhagen.
Wagen RBK 753 in de Obere Köningsstrasse ter hoogte van Galeria. Hier rijdt de tram op de gewone bovenleiding 600V DC. Wanneer de tram de stad verlaat en verder op het niet geëlektrificeerde spoorwegnet rijdt, schakelt hij over op een eigen 375 kW sterke dieselgenerator en produceert zijn eigen rijstroom.
Van dit type trams zijn er ook die in plaats van over een dieselgenerator te beschikken een tweespanningssysteem hebben. In de stad rijden ze dus als alle andere trams op de 600V DC van de bovenleiding, op het treinspoor schakelen ze over naar de 15 kV van de Duitse spoorwegen.
