Ambrose Bierce's definition of a dictionary:
"A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work."

The ability to tell a story is perhaps our most powerful magic.
There is always an overwhelming sensation of emptiness upon finishing a book. I feel like over the course of reading I make new friends and with that last line there is always the feeling of loss and of loneliness, such as one might experience when watching a loved one board a plane. Sometimes I cry because it has ended and other times I go back to the beginning and start again.
This dictionary has 1642 pages of words. It is my favourite dictionary. I got it for £4.99 from a charity shop eight years ago.

Beginning to think that this is becoming my test location for cameras and lenses. Not such a nice day this time but a 'better' result. For this I used an old digtal camera from 2000/1, and it obviously still works.

Capturing this pretty cliche shadow/light play with my mobile phone .... what's not cliche is the use of Blue-Tac to create the faux "ring" instead of say my wedding ring ha ha & my focus on the words rather then the shadow shape which just plays a supporting role in the composition

The dictionary meaning of fauna is "animals indigenous to a certain habitat." Well, cows are very common in our local farming communities and they seemed to be the only brave animals out in this weeks weather. I stayed in the car to capture this guy and ordered hubby to go forward a bit, then back just a bit and then rolled down the window! I enjoyed my week with this Flickr group. Thanks.
I just keep buying random stuff I run across. I don't need any of it, I'm not even sure I want any of it, I just see it & buy it LOL Anyway, here's a bunch of stuff I bought.
Sanderling (Calidris alba)
Meaning behind the name:
Calidris = Greek, having connections to refer to a Grey coloured waterside bird (pointing to it's grey winter plumage). I suspect that the actual meaning has been lost over the centuries. But it's interesting to point out that a very simular lettered word (Calidus) in my dictionary has a meaning of "Warm/Hot" which would make sence as the summer plumage tends to look like a warm type of orangy colour. (Simular lettered words used in Scientific names have similar meanings)
Alba = Latin for "White, dull white" and may refer to it's grey and white winter plumage or white underbelly.
The English name was influenced by the sandy beaches where it's preferred winter habitat is. The name first appeared as Sanderling in 1602. It's thought that the original form of this name was "Sander" around the latter part of the Middle English period.
