INFORMATION ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Uncle Sam is a national personification of the United States (US), with the first usage of the term dating from the War of 1812 and the first illustration dating from 1852. He is often depicted as a serious elderly white man with white hair and a goatee, with an obvious resemblance to Presidents Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln, and dressed in clothing that recalls the design elements of the flag of the United States—for example, typically a top hat with red and white stripes and white stars on a blue band, and red and white striped trousers.
Common folklore holds origins trace back to soldiers stationed in upstate New York, who would receive barrels of meat stamped with the initials U.S. The soldiers jokingly referred these initials as to naming the troops' meat supplier, (Uncle) Samuel Wilson of Troy, New York.
The 87th United States Congress adopted the following resolution on September 15, 1961: "Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives that the Congress salutes Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of America's National symbol of Uncle Sam." Monuments mark his birthplace in Arlington, Massachusetts, and site of burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York. Another sign marks "The boyhood home of Uncle Sam" outside his second home in Mason, NH. The first use of the term in literature is seen in an 1816 allegorical book, The Adventures of Uncle Sam in Search After His Lost Honor by Frederick Augustus Fidfaddy, Esq., also in reference to the aforementioned Samuel Wilson.
Earlier representative figures of the United States included such beings as "Brother Jonathan," used by Punch magazine. These were overtaken by Uncle Sam somewhere around the time of the Civil War. The female personification "Columbia" has seldom been seen since the 1920s.
Originally published as the cover for the July 6, 1916, issue of Leslie's Weekly with the title "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?" this portrait of "Uncle Sam" went on to become--according to its creator, James Montgomery Flagg--"the most famous poster in the world." Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918, as the United States entered World War I and began sending troops and matériel into war zones.
Flagg (1877-1960) contributed forty-six works to support the war effort. He was a member of the first Civilian Preparedness Committee organized in New York in 1917 and chaired by Grosvenor Clarkson. He also served as a member of Charles Dana Gibson's Committee of Pictorial Publicity, which was organized under the federal government's Committee on Public Information, headed by George Creel.
Because of its overwhelming popularity, the image was later adapted for use in World War II. Upon presenting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a copy of the poster, Flagg remarked that he had been his own model for Uncle Sam to save the modeling fee. Roosevelt was impressed and replied: "I congratulate you on your resourcefulness in saving model hire. Your method suggests Yankee forebears."
Uncle Sam is one of the most popular personifications of the United States. However, the term "Uncle Sam" is of somewhat obscure derivation. Historical sources attribute the name to a meat packer who supplied meat to the army during the War of 1812--Samuel (Uncle Sam) Wilson (1766-1854). "Uncle Sam" Wilson was a man of great fairness, reliability, and honesty, who was devoted to his country--qualities now associated with "our" Uncle Sam. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960)

Managua, Nicararagua.
This photo is from what is now the Nicaraguan National Police Academy's (ACAPOL) headquarter, but what used to be - before the revolution of 1979 - the place where the last ruling dictator from the Somoza clan, Anastasio "Tachito" Somoza Debayle, housed his mistress/unofficial second wife, Dinorah Sampson. It is located on the Carretera Sur in Managua.
This late 1960s/early 1970s style house- which is part of much larger grounds where new police recruits are trained - still contains many original traces. It is a fascinating piece of Nicaraguan modern history and one of these places where you really do wish that the walls (and the swimmingpools!) could speak. The material layers of modern Nicaraguan history sit literally side by side - from Somoza's mistress and the high-life of the Managuan elite, to the Sandinista police in 1979 and now the Policía Nacional de Nicaragua. All in less than 40 years.
Gott wohnt in jedem Menschen.

For no less than 35 years, Marshal Tito was the face of Yugoslavia. He moved on the stage of world politics with bravado: he opposed the almighty Soviet Union, his Tito-ism formed the ideal buffer against Stalinsm for the West. In short, Tito put Yugoslavia on the world map. More importantly, Tito has managed to maintain stability in Yugoslavia all these years. How did he manage to keep those very strong nationalistic feelings in check all these years? Tito just said: Don't whine, shut up. Most importantly, Tito, with a sophisticated strategy, made sure that no people felt like a minority. No one is better or more valuable than another. As the leader of his partisan army, which consisted of different population groups, he was the only one who really stood above the parties. Especially in the early years of his reign unsavory things happened. Indeed. People who opposed him during the war or shortly afterwards have been disabled. Thousands of people have been murdered and beaten to death. The problem with dictators, and Tito was of course a dictator, is that they don't have suitable successors. No one can and should stand in their shadow, so when such a ruler dies, power falls into the hands of all kinds of incapable figures. After Tito's death in 1980, Yugoslavia is rapidly declining. The increasingly poor relations between the different population groups eventually culminate in a civil war. You can still find slogans of Tito, also here at the abandoned Prevlaka Fortress: Tito - leads our way - to je naš put.
Prevlaka is a peninsula at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor - Montenegro. It is the southernmost point in Croatia. There is a neglected fortress from 1870. It was bombed in 1943 and this is still clearly visible. There are plans for restoration. The reserve is totally overgrown, but nature is breathtaking. There is a beautiful view from the terrace. Prevlaka's strategic location and proximity to a naval base have led Prevlaka to several quarrels between Croatia and Yugoslavia. In the early 1990s, during the Croatian War of Independence, Yugoslavia occupied the peninsula. In 1996, the two countries agreed to demilitarize it, and UN observers came to monitor it. Recognized as a territory of Croatia in 2006. Worth a visit if you like abandoned ancient ruins.

No one seems to know where it came from. One autumn morning, folks woke and there it was by the railroad tracks. There are those who suspect Clem and Floyd must be planning some new get rich scheme.
Whoever erected the monolith wanted it to last. They made it from galvanized tin. Local folks used to mark this particular stretch of track by mentioning the ruins there. The monolith now blocks the view of the ruins. A tower of steel graffiti, it dominates the landscape.
This was the fourth location covered by the one24thscale team that day. We were tired and quickly set the scene before twighlight faded to night. We had planned on sliding the table to one side or another to feature the ruins that drew us to this location in the first place.
As Ken looked into the viewfinder for the first time, he laughed and had me look. I laughed too. We had created a perfectly balanced image that just happens to almost completely obscure the ruin.
The way the trees wrapped around the sign was just too perfect and we decided it was fine. We may go back without the sign and build another scene around the actual ruin, which by the way, is not an actual ruin but a bit of fancy some artist erected. The front of the structure and interior walls have been covered by graffiti, so we shot the back instead.
Sometimes, Plan B turns out for the best.

Special:
- Originally, the company was a producer of industrial mining wagons, founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868 under the name of the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company.
- While Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and 1904 with gasoline vehicles, it partnered with other builders (Garford of Elyria, Ohio, and the Everett-Metzger-Flanders [E-M-F] Company of Detroit) of gasoline-powered vehicles until 1911. In 1913, Studebaker introduced the first gasoline-powered automobiles under its own “Studebaker” brand name.
- The name “Dictator”, Studebaker’s lowest-price model, was intended to connote that the model "dictated the standard" that other automobile makes would be obliged to follow.
- In the United States the name initially caused no problems, outside the USA the model name might seem unfortunate. At the time, the only dictator that would have immediately come to an American mind was Benito Mussolini, whose popular image was one of audacity and strength, in spite of well-publicized fascist violence. However the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany tainted the word Dictator. Studebaker abruptly discontinued the name '”Dictator” in 1937, resurrecting the “Commander” name which had been dropped in 1935.
- The 1930 Dictator 8 Series FC was available as this 4-door Sedan, as 4-door Regal Sedan, as 4-door Brougham, as 4-door Tourer, as 4-door Regal Tourer, as 2-door Club Sedan, as 2-door Business Coupé and as 2-door Sport Coupé, all built at the plants in South Bend (USA) and Hamilton, Ontario (Canada).
Our dictator in chief has done a few things this week...tried to silence media and scientists, harm the environment, generally continued to treat facts as fantasy and his own opinions as facts, reduced funding for countries with pro choice family planning options, severely limited immigration, threatened to build a wall, started to dismantle our health care system.
Pretty much, the billionaires don't care about the poor and somehow there are still people who voted for him that didn't see this coming. We have a Putin backed Oligarchy in the white house right now and they don't care about public education, the rights of people with disabilities, or the rights pretty much of anyone who isn't a white rich man.
Goldman Sachs and the conservative agenda is running our country and the world. In the midst of this, Trump announced that he might send in the Feds to Chicago to get our violence problem under control....or does he mean his protest problem?
It'll only be a matter of time before this horror becomes the new normal and our ADHD ridden world seems to forget from day to day the savagery wreaked upon them.

Photographed May 24, 2016 at Hidden Lake Gardens near Tipton in Michigan's Irish Hills. These are the botanical gardens of Michigan State University and the location chosen by the owner for a photo session with his Studebaker, one of only four 1927 right hand drive Studebakers known to still exist. The model was marketed for postal delivery use.

I really had to push the ISO on our resident Costas Hummingbird, aka: "The Dictator." He was sitting underneath the patio cover, so no direct sun to highlight that flashy throat patch. It's grainy, I know, but he's just so adorable!
Had the old Studebaker over at Clem's garage today. I keep telling Clem he ought to clean the place up a bit, but I gotta admit, it does have a certain "charm".
It was great to be able to experiment with some light and shadow. I have to thank my friend Larry Patchett for the 1:24 scale skylight window. It made a huge difference in the final photo. I also love the fall colors of the real trees in the extreme background.
Hats off to Danbury Mint for their incredible attention to detail both under the hood and otherwise with the 1937 Studebaker Dictator Coupe. It is beautiful and it's easily one of my favorite die cast models.

"Did I Stutter?" asks the Statue of Liberty...no, but clearly the fascists in power aren't listening.
Trump has been doing a ton of things while most Americans go to bed (literally in the late night hours)....withdrawing from climate change treaties, firing Sally Yates our Attorney General because she upheld the Constitution. He also replaced Daniel Ragsdale, the acting director of immigration enforcement. One of the likely person referred to in the Christopher Steele dossier, Oleg Erovinkin, has been found dead (not suspicious at all...)
Not sure what it's going to take for every American to get out of their homes and protest and for this dictator to be impeached but I'll be protesting again today. If you live in Chicago, here's the link:

Economic progress, in capitalist society, means turmoil.

The years of the economic depression have been years of political reaction, and that is why the economic crisis has generated a world peace crisis. Arthur Henderson

"You’ll never get love by force
The truth will always take its course
Some people really have no shame
It’s just an illness with a name

Someone wanted to be king
Came and fucked up everything
Goodbye my dictator, goodbye

This book was given to me by a friend a few years ago. It was printed in Spain in 1947, a few years after Franco (the dictator) came into power. The book is called "Consejos a las jóvenes" (Advice for Young Ladies) and is filled with "wonderful" suggestions on how to be a young, conservative lady at that time. One of the suggestions, just to give you an idea, is to concentrate less on chatting and giggling and focus more on embroidering instead! Franco died in 1975, three years after I was born.
