DIAMONDS IN THE SKY

I ride my bike down Sparks Lane

And I hear an echo from the past;

It is a surreal world

Like a dream of what was.

Here, everything tells a story,

The story of Cades Cove, Tennessee.

The story of Lucy and her family, a long time ago.

This universal story could have been of your ancestors,

Close to you.

See these diamonds in the sky!

In the colors of a crazy kaleidoscope;

Lucy is there, among her folks, the ones she loved so much;

It's like they never left their village,

As if they were always watching over its destiny.

They left here traces of their labor.

And, as a legacy, a unique human landscape,

Still imprinted with their pride.

A pride with a thousand colors of diamonds painted in the sky.

I ride my bike down Sparks Lane

Wondering if we can, we too, one day

Paint diamonds in the sky.

on lightroom is even better.

A few short stacked exposures of a section of the Carina–Sagittarius Arm (also called the Sagittarius Arm) of the Milky Way Galaxy (imaged along the galactic plane, because we're in the disk of the spiral). Photographed just out of the city's light pollution.

About the Milky Way, and Earth's place within it:

The Milky Way Galaxy is estimated to have over 400 billion stars. Stars are suns, and just like in our Solar System, many of the stars have planets and moons. Our sun is a middle aged Yellow Dwarf star, located in the Orion Arm (or Orion Spur) of the Milky Way Galaxy. It’s a minor side spiral arm, located between two larger arms of the Milky Way Galaxy's spiral. The Milky Way is merely one mid-sized barred spiral Galaxy, amongst over 100 billion other Galaxies in the observable Universe. When we look up at the night sky from Earth, we see a glimpse of the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. It takes about 250 million years for the Milky Way Galaxy's spiral arms to complete one rotation.

The size, distance and age of the Universe is far beyond human comprehension. The known Universe is estimated to contain over One Billion Trillion stars (the latest estimates are substantially higher).

A wide view of a section of the beautiful constellation of Orion, imaged in mid Summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Photographed with a standard (unmodified) mid-range Nikon D7000 DSLR camera and Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 ED lens (stopped down to f/4 for optimal optical performance).

This widefield view around Orion's Belt includes several beautiful Deep Sky Objects including The Great Nebula in Orion (M42), The Horsehead Nebula (IC434) and Barnard's Loop.

About Barnard's Loop:

Barnard's Loop (also known as Sharpless 2-276) is a huge Nebular shell, about 1,600 light-years away in the constellation Orion. It envelops a large part of the Orion Complex. Barnard's Loop is thought to have been formed by a series of Supernovae that occurred two to three million years ago. The ionized shell is part of an even larger molecular Hydrogen cloud, and is kept luminous by a group of hot young stars.

About the image:

This is the first test image that I shot with my iOptron SkyTracker Pro. I decided to get a SkyTracker so that I can use a regular old camera and lens to photograph wide angle shots of the sky while I'm busy imaging with my Telescope. It is a fairly inexpensive way to do long exposures of the night sky with standard photographic equipment that you already have.

Location:

The rural dark skies of the African Bushveld in the Waterberg, Limpopo Province, South Africa (on a very warm Summer's evening).

About the Star Colors:

You will notice that star colors differ from red, orange and yellow, to blue. This is an indication of the temperature of the star's Nuclear Fusion process. This is determined by the size and mass of the star, and the stage of its life cycle. In short, the blue stars are hotter, and the red ones are cooler.

I have been wanting to get a photo of the stars for a very long time. When there have been opportunities to be away from the city lights, it has usually been overcast or raining ... however this week I was given an opportunity to try out a such a shot.

This is especially dedicated to Tessa and the generations of star gazers who have been compelled to look upward and outward and to dream.

About this image

A widefield 2 panel mosaic of the region around the star-rich Coalsack Dark Nebula, also simply called the Coalsack (C99). It is the most prominent Dark Nebula in the sky, easily visible to the naked eye as a dark patch silhouetted against the Milky Way in the Southern Hemisphere. C99 is located at a distance of approximately 600 light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Crux (The Southern Cross). The blue star cluster at the top left is called the Jewel Box Cluster (NGC 4755).

About Star Colors:

You will notice that star colors differ from red, orange and yellow, to blue. This is an indication of the temperature of the star's Nuclear Fusion process. This is determined by the size and mass of the star, and the stage of its life cycle. In short, the blue stars are hotter, and the red ones are cooler.

Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), a globular cluster in the constellation of Centaurus. Located at a distance of 15,800 light-years, it is the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way Galaxy (at a diameter of roughly 150 light-years).

The Omega Centauri globular cluster is estimated to contain approximately 10 million stars.

We had RAIN this morning, about 2 hours worth. When I looked out our skylight, and saw this, I had to go back for more photos...I got HIGH on Nature, inhaling the fresh air after a rain and seeing all the diamonds in the sky!!

Praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD from the heavens,

praise him in the heights above.

Praise him, all his angels,

praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon,

praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens

and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,

for he commanded and they were created.

Our ice storm up here in mid-Michigan was mild compared to many others: about 1/4 inch of the stuff. The cold temps have kept the trees and shrubbery garbed in diamonds.

Baby Caleb's family didn't fare as well. They've been without power since Sunday. They're at his paternal grandpa's.

All did end well on that score. Consumers Energy worked hard when they heard there was a newborn.
