Birds flew around us and in a beautiful blue sky as we waited at the tracks for our train home.

“There's a graveyard in northern France where all the dead boys from D-Day are buried. The white crosses reach from one horizon to the other. I remember looking it over and thinking it was a forest of graves. But the rows were like this, dizzying, diagonal, perfectly straight, so after all it wasn't a forest but an orchard of graves. Nothing to do with nature, unless you count human nature.”

Diagonal Mar i Front MarĂtim del Poblenou is a neighborhood in the Sant MartĂ district of Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain).

The area between the seafront and the Besòs river was previously made up of slums and poor areas surrounding the neighbourhoods of La Mina, El Maresme and Poblenou. Under the new name Diagonal Mar, in reference to its proximity to the sea and Avinguda Diagonal, renovation started taking place in the late 1990s. Still ongoing, this has been one of the most ambitions urban regeneration schemes, and also one of the most controversial and a perceived departure from Barcelona's well-established urban model.

Diagonal's main school building was dedicated on January 26, 1915. It was designed to allow light from the left and rear sides of the classrooms as well as fresh air ventilators.

The basement originally housed a gymnasium with a dirt floor, as funds were tight then as they are now. The floor was eventually finished and the building was wired for electricity in 1917. The gymnasium is now an art classroom.

The building escaped disaster in 1918 when coal stored in the basement and used for heating spontaneously combusted. Every available boy and man (no mention of what the women were doing at the time) hauled out smoldering coal and saved the building.

In 2015 the school absorbed students from nearby Clearfield when its school system closed. Despite that, in 2018 Diagonal's school system was the smallest in Iowa.

The Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) or Arab World Institute (AWI), in English, was established during 1980 in Paris, when 18 Arab countries concluded an agreement with France to establish the Institute to disseminate information about the Arab world and set in motion detailed research to cover Arabic and the Arab world’s cultural and spiritual values. The Institute also aims at promoting cooperation and cultural exchanges between France and the Arab world, particularly in the areas of science and technology, thus contributing to development of relations between the Arab world and Europe.

AWI is located in the building also known as Institut du Monde Arabe, designed by architect Jean Nouvel, and constructed from 1981 to 1987.
