Space Agency ASI’s Acoustic Diagnostics experiment aboard the International Space Station.

This experiment uses special headphones containing a small device that records the response of the inner ear to study the effect of microgravity and background noise on astronaut hearing. Detecting hearing loss in space will both help take care of astronauts’ health during long missions and improve a device for testing hearing more accurately in any noisy environment on Earth.

I have known for about 3 weeks. But in the letter it says they can lock you up in the Tower of London for 6 months if you tell before it is official. So I have sat on it, literally telling no one except my wife and the press office at work. Not something that comes easy to me!

Got home from work this evening to find a Freddo Frog cake for me to celebrate. Inside is a honeycake (Rivercottage Pam Corbin recipe) – I love this! & I have previously featured this on flickr and included recipe I think. Fredo Frog bars are a guilty pleasure for me and topped by white chocolate always works too!.

Totally unexpected by me (both OBE and cake). OBE is very UK concept I think. Not sure if there is any roughly equivalent process in US/EU but essentially it is a state award to recognise contribution in my working life and specifically in case of current round, it is in relation to Covid diagnostics in Northern Ireland this year.

A lovely surprise and very gratifying- I realise my name is in the frame for this because of my role but is, really, an award for lots of people who have contributed and made my role and service possible/successful. Also, conscious that COVID things look so problematic at present here that the biggest challenges are actually still to come and that those big challenges are going to be on top of us very soon

So it is much too early for anyone to be thanking us for a job done!

My smart nephew Seb wasn’t that keen on clapping in the Spring (even though both his parents are HCWs). He said “I’ll clap when they get a vaccine”. I will definitely clap wholeheartedly with Seb when we get there.
