Fog is something that fascinates me every time I am amidst of it. As the clouds roll and the winds start to pick up, the fog gently lifting and the sun's rays beaming through all makes for a compelling wintry morning...

As we gear up to it, I was reminiscing with one I had shot a few years ago in Kerala, India. Munnar is one of the most renowned hill stations in Southern India. It brims with vast expanses of tea estates and the tea plantation is something that generates a lot of revenue for the country.

The name Munnar is believed to mean "three rivers", referring to its location at the confluence of the Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers.

This was shot from one of the locations up in the mountains and would you believe at 10 AM in the morning! It was that foggy that morning.

If you see it for a while, your eyes could start discerning the other trees amidst the fog...

A shot from our trip to Munnar... This one was taken over the Lockhart Gap...

As we drove towards the Lockhart Gap my hope was to watch and catch the sunset... as we came up the sun was going down really fast and the light was dimming too...

When we reached the top the sky looked spectacular... it still does !

My better half was so much in love with the sky that she has been reminding me every now and then... "did you post it yet?" and I have kept it at hand, so here it goes another one of her favorites... :-)

Munnar (Malayalam: മൂന്നാര്‍ , Tamil: மூணார்) is a town located in Kerala state in South India. The name is often used to refer to the whole tourist area of Idukki District of which the town forms a part. Munnar panchayat of Devikulam block is the largest in the district with an area of 557 km². The etymology of Munnar is believed to be derived from the Malayalam words Muunu (three) and aaru (river), referring to the town's strategic location at the confluence of the Muthirappuzha, Chanduvarai and Kundali rivers.[citation needed] Located in the southern Western Ghats the area is surrounded by vast jungles and remains wet and cold during most of the year. Nearby is the Mattupetty Dam.

The people of Munnar share in the culture and traditions of Kerala. Tamil immigrants from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu also figure significantly in the population.

During the British rule of India, Munnar was developed to cultivate tea plants.[2] At that time, most of the people around the area were employed as laborers for plantations throughout the area. In the early stages of development, only Tamilians and a small number of Malayalis inhabited Munnar. From the late 1890's till 1921, tea was transported down from Top Station by 24 inch railway and ropeway to Munnar for transhipment throughout the World.

The region in and around Munnar varies in height from 1,600 meters (5,249.3 ft) to 1,800 meters (5,905.5 ft) above mean sea level. Munnar enjoys a salubrious climate. The weather ranges between 0 °C (32 °F) and +10 °C (50 °F) in winter and +15 °C (59 °F) and +25 °C (77 °F) in summer. The tourist season is from August to May. However, even the monsoons are lovely with many streams and rivulets in the area.

In a bid to escape the chaos of the busy Munnar town, with its horde of honeymooners and those same-cap wearing tour bus participants, we rode far and long to get to Top Station, steering clear from all the designated 'photo points' and 'tourist attractions'.

We went right past a huge bunch of tourists at an 'echo point' along the Mattupetty Dam reservoir and rode ahead to find our own quiet spot by the lake. We parked our bike and walked right to the end of a jetty-like stretch of land going into the water. A little retreat we made our own for the next couple of minutes. We admired the sweeping panorama and heard our 'hellos' and whistles echo away in the distance before we rode away to find a new adventure.
