Another sunset from The Point overlook along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. The clouds were beautiful all evening and as the sunset progressed the scene was just incredible.

The exhibition Women, (Be)coming II is a presentation of artworks that were developed as a part of artistic residence Wom@arts and are rooted in the fields of printmaking, illustration and digital art. The artist created as a response to a millstone work of Simone de Beauvoir The Second Sex, which celebrates its 70 year anniversary this year. Their works are the mix of their diverse media, cultural and generational experiences. They raise the questions of “woman’s nature” - her belonging in the social construct, her own history or “herstory” and her future plans. The exhibition represents 16 female artist from 10 European cities. To find out a little more about the background of the creations we've organized a discussion with the digital media artists the day before the opening. Shortly after the conversation, a workshop, where we will make short videos with our smartphones and tablets, will fallow. The workshop will be inspired by the question of a female role in this day and age.

A relict of a small two seat electric car project, which started in 1991 in Škoda Ejpovice. The design was done by Belgian designer Benoit Cointreau, two models existed - this small red one, and a yellow one in full size. A real working prototype was made and tested with a simple wooden body, but at that point the project was paused, and the developers focused on another electric car, a small city van called Beta, which was put into production, but as a conventional IC car with a Škoda engine, and later became the popular Tatra Beta. The Alfa was not forgotten, at least one prototype was fnished by the well known MTX company, but due to some mishaps all possibilities of this projects continuation were unsuccesful. In the early 90´s Swiss visionary Nicolas Hayek, creator of the Smart minicar, adressed the MTX company with a plan to develop a two seat minicar on their Alfa know-how, but the talks were not fruitful, and after an unsuccesful cooperation with VW, it was Mercedes-Benz who gave the Smart a chance to come ino the world.
Today we are learning about the Maillard reaction. This is a chemical reaction that develops the flavor in roast meat and also in other foods:
# 'caramel' made from milk and sugar
# the browning of bread and toast
# the colour of beer, chocolate, coffee, and maple syrup
# the color of dried or condensed milk
yikes it also is what happens to your skin when you use self-tanning lotions (good thing we have never used that stuff!)

The Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction between an amino acid and a reducing sugar, usually requiring the addition of heat. Like caramelization, it is a form of non-enzymatic browning. The reactive carbonyl group of the sugar interacts with the nucleophilic amino group of the amino acid, and interesting but poorly characterized odor and flavor molecules result. This reaction is the basis of the flavoring industry, since the type of amino acid determines the resulting flavor.
In the process, hundreds of different flavor compounds are created. These compounds in turn break down to form yet more new flavor compounds, and so on. Each type of food has a very distinctive set of flavor compounds that are formed during the Maillard reaction. It is these same compounds that flavor scientists have used over the years to create artificial flavors.
Although used since ancient times, the reaction is named after the chemist Louis-Camille Maillard who investigated it in the 20th century.
The process
1. The carbonyl group of the sugar reacts with the amino group of the amino acid, producing N-substituted glycosylamine and water
2. The unstable glycosylamine undergoes Amadori rearrangement, forming ketosamines
3. There are several ways for the ketosamines to react further:
4. * Produce 2 water and reductones
5. * Diacetyl, acetol, pyruvaldehyde and other short-chain hydrolytic fission products can be formed
6. * Produce brown nitrogenous polymers and melanoidins

A box from Adorama Camera showed up today and it was full of all the stuff I should need to get started developing my own black and white film from my Rolleicord.
I finally got around to developing my photos from the trip to the States.
The camera got bashed up pretty bad on the way up to Maine, but it still managed to take photos. Just got it fixed at the Pentax A/S center here and it is as good as new. Those K1000s are workhorses :)

Exhibited at CECAL - Loulé, Portugal 2016.
All of the pictures were photographed in a light box (box made of cardboard and tracing paper, illuminated by LEDS). Except the series "Trying to belong" (Bert and Ernie), which was photographed outdoors. The developing was fully processed in the darkroom of “Casa da Cultura de Loulé”, and was exposed the original prints in silver chloride paper. (the presented examples are its scans)
The dolls photographed are a selection of some children toys of the authors and her nephew, plus some decoration dolls from their houses.
The narratives presented in each series or individual photo, are illustrations of personal situations and opinions, or simply the result of a time playing with dolls.
