These are wires at many different angles. A high voltage is placed on each wire and when a high energy particle ionises the gas near a wire the resulting ions drift to the wire and produce a pulse.
As there are many (non touching) wires at slightly different angles, the postion of the ionisation within the chamber can be determined and the path of the particle tracked.

- the detector unit apparently contains also Ra-226 source - our guess is that it was used to reset the X-ray dosimeter by "removing" the electrostatic charge from the electrostatic relay so you can start a new measurement...
