Macro Mondays Leaves only Leaves

A few weeks back I picked up two or three leaves from the capital pear trees in our driveway and decided to see what sort of shots I could get using a black cloth as background, a bit of desklamp lighting manipulation and a tweak or two of photo post-processing editing. This is a different shot from one I posted of the same leaf a few weeks ago.

Macro Mondays: "Bubbles"

A plastic spoon that I used to scoop out some soap bubbles; lit with a desklamp. Converted to black and white.

The image is about 5 cm (2 inches) on the long edge.

A few weeks ago, I found a whole and closed seed pod fallen from an horse chestnut; left in a cool part of the house, it opened slowly without the nuts losing their lustre.

Two weeks, a late evening with a camera, desklamp and a sheet of burnt baking paper later, here we are. I took some in film, also, which will follow, if they worked.

Horse chestnut seedpod from Woodstock, Oxon, October 2020. Pentax K-S1, 50mm kit lens.

Ball-bearing.

This was an experiment in one idea which kind of morphed into three.

I’d noticed before that the metal case on my Chromebook had a nice bevelled pattern which I thought would make an interesting abstract sometime.

Then for the Crazy Tuesday theme of minimalism, which is something that really interests me and a kind of photography I’d like to explore, I thought of a single ball bearing against a bland background. And that became the Chromebook top to get the repetition of the circular shapes with size contrast.

And then when it came to taking it (in a late rush as per usual) I used a desk lamp to supplement the daylight with the idea of removing the colour later, but that created another contrast in colour with a warring boundary between the two.

So we here we are three ideas in one implementation. Never a good thing but an interesting starter experiment for the ideas.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Crazy Tuesday :)

[Handheld on the little camera; mixed daylight/tungsten halogen desklamp.

Taking it was a bit of a fiddle as I wanted to get the in-focus line to join the bearing and the orange bright spot along a diagonal for strength, and have the blue orange boundary along the opposite diagonal. After a bit of contorting it got there... ish... kind of :)

Developed in Capture One with keystone correction and careful cropping, and attention to colour balance and detail.

In Photo combined two versions from C1 to retain sharpening around bearing but to demphasise surface texture.

Curves in LAB mode to reduce contrast except in darks around bearing. Tweaked colour to try and get the balance between the two areas more even… not terribly succesfully.

A bit of inpainting to remove dust and annoying highlights in bearing. Sharpened with Unsharp Mask and High Pass/Linear blend. Gave up. Published :)]

A good old Aussie panel van in a good old Aussie country town - this is the main street that runs through Murray Bridge in South Australia and the good old Aussie car is the General Motors Holden HJ Sandman Panel van from the mid 1970s. A black and white shot taken just around sunset as the street lamps were turning on.

************************************

An indoor forced perspective shot of the 1/24th scale model Holden HJ Sandman panel van taken against the backdrop of my own older photo of Bridge street in Murray Bridge. The model car is actually more of a kid's toy with working headlights and is made entirely of plastic. It is remarkably faithful to the original design in all the little details.

Taken with the Sony RX10 m4 with lighting from two handheld LED lights aiming at the road and overhead, with a third LED desklamp aimed upward for more diffused light. Converted to black and white partly for an older feel but partly because I could not quite match the light and colours as well as I would have liked.

This isn't a b/w shot - the pencil is purple!

I spent some time last night working on some still life photography. Its not an area I would usually dabble in, but I had noticed the texture of a grapefruit Trudy had ordered with our shopping and that sent me down the track of light and shadows and textures. Using an extremely basic set-up of a desk lamp stage right and some crepe paper hanging off a clothes horse for light diffusion (all the photographic mod-cons for me!) I practiced with the grapefruits and these apples. More results to come.

I was trying to emulate a behind the scenes ILM model department in this MOC but perhaps it comes across as a bit more of a generic workshop, but Star Wars related nonetheless!

I had a lot of fun recreating my own props for this scene like the desklamp, pots of paint, and other paraphernalia found in the workspace as well as some tiny Star Wars vehicles: the AT-AT is my favourite.

Macro Mondays :: Rainbow :: 15.4.13 :: HMM everyone!

Since our sun now sets sometime between 5.30 and 6.00pm, it doesn't leave me much time to shoot with daylight so I've found a new shooting spot...on my son's desk/ chair with his desklamp for lighting, that's why you are seeing more dark / lowlight background shots from me lately.

This is an emergency mad dash last minute backup shots, I had gone to the beach with Maddy to shoot just before sunset and thought I had my day 102 beach shot in the bag but upon downloading realized this wasn't so as I didn't a like any of them. Therefore you now see a pencil shot and not a beach one.

I wasn't sure I'd get a Macro Mondays pic again. However, the early sunshine (that I missed) turned into another cold grey day.

I decided to brighten my day with a shot of these Treasured earstuds.

Given to me by my Mum after she took a trip to Australia to see family and friends, they have been my go to for special occasions, especially for my son's wedding, as it felt I was bringing Mum along as she never met his wife.

I love the complexity of colours, but mostly that they remind me of Mum when I wear them.

Photographed at 1:1 focus on a sheet of black acrylic, with a desklamp angled for lighting so as to create the minimum reflections in the Australian opals.

Hardly to figure out what you are looking at: A black Kaiser idell 6556 desk lamp, an original and old design icon, sending out its light.

The Kaiser idell lamps are original Bauhaus Design, designed by Christian Dell.

It is a ticket to the next place, one step in the ascending spiral staircase.

A ‘day for night’ take on a bedside table lamp. Exposed normally with natural daylight streaking through vertical blinds. No artificial light sources were used. Converted to a 'nighttime look' with pedal to the metal Photoshop processing. Photographed March 6, 2022.
