Lines and Designs: Exploring the Elements of Art
The Museum welcomed over 200 campers from the entire Birmingham area, other parts of Alabama, and as far as New York to this year’s Summer Art Camp. Teachers introduced students to artworks in our collection that illustrated “Lines and Designs: The Elements of Art.” The teachers led the campers on a journey through the Museum to discover obvious and hidden lines, colors, shapes, and patterns. Every camper this year received Museum Studio sketch books and used them throughout the week with their teachers, compiling a visual journal of their week at camp.
The summer began with the Young Artists discovering how pattern can be made through lines and repeated forms. They presented their discoveries through colorful, patterned paintings related to artworks in the Contemporary Gallery, cut paper referring to the graphic quality of the Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass window, and inscribed in clay referencing the BMA’s African pottery. The Young Artists also looked at the broader scope of how a Museum is curated, examining the larger picture of patterns and connections within a collection of objects. One group created mini museums, complete with brochures, while the second group designed boxes for a collection of objects.
The Little Masters continued the theme by creating paper maché vessels echoing lines and patterns found in our African pots, created their own geometric stained glass windows, and formed sculptures using clay, straw, and wire. They even successfully tackled the concept of “line of sight” using the gaze of the Horizon sculptures by Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir.
Our Junior and Senior campers examined the same ideas in more depth. They experimented with building whimsical clay pots, drawing the human form using a variety of materials, and different forms of printmaking. Our students rose to the artistic challenges the teachers provided, exceeding even their own expectations. Along with our Young Artists, the Junior/Senior campers looked at some artwork through the eyes of guest Annie Damsky, the owner of Villager Yoga, learning through their body movement how lines and designs are inherent in everything.
The highlight was one of our Young Artist’s moms passing on the message from her son after his first day: “Best camp ever!”

For Gustav Holst and Claude Debussy, the beauty of Earth and its surrounding planets inspired them not to collect data, but to compose music. Now, 100 years after the first performance of Holst’s “The Planets,” audiences had a chance to hear their music and see depictions of our awe-inspiring solar system simultaneously.
On Jan 27 and 28, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, in collaboration with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, presented Cosmic Designs at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD. In this marriage of music and space imagery, the orchestra performed Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.” Video producers at Goddard worked to collect depictions of our solar system’s planets, as well as Earth’s oceans to accompany the music. Using both satellite pictures and animations, this presentation illustrated tones in the music, making the audible narrative in the music come alive visually.

Some T-shirt designs i came up with, going to screen print these myself, when im done with another project.
This is specialy dedicated to my flickr friend Karen. A few days ago she posted a very deep and true little text about old photos on her FB page. And the importance of having them in a material form. She is so right. Machines don't last for ever, programs become obsolete, websites no longer exist.... This is the case for example for this free design. The company no longer exists. I was so happy to have found it in my mess. A few yeas ago, i din't have a computer. So i use to print the designs i found on the internet. If i haven't printed it, i would only have the little embroidery i made thanks to it. But the paper survived the website. Thanks again Karen for sharing your thoughts and lovely photos.
