October Toys gets the award for best micro event at VTN. The Choking Hazard Mini Gwin Custom Show was so small you might have missed it entirely. The 1-inch figures display rivals those kiosks at the mall that promise to write your name on a grain of sand. My eyesight is crap, but I could make out a couple I thought were fun, like a Groucho Marx Gwin. The Choking Hazard show is set to travel, so get your binoculars out of storage. October Toys also had their Christmas Zombies 5-packs on hand.

Next to October Toys, I got to chat a bit with George and Ayleen of Toy Break. They were both super nice, and I’m going to try to make an effort to watch more streaming video, which I can somehow never sit still for. I got caught up extolling the virtues of Pea Soup Andersens for the hungry SF-LA traveller in knowing company and didn’t get a photo of the beard and fuzzy slippers, which are both real. Last photo here is Toy Break’s Matt who was doing live sculpting on the VTN stage for several hours.

This is one reason why it’s good to get away from the computer and go out to events: Super Rad Toys. I mean this both generically (super rad toys!) and as pertaining to the Beverly Hills toy company (Super Rad Toys). I’d seen the Horton figures and the Ningyo Project casually online here and there, but never all at once and not in 3D. These are really, really cool and QC looks top notch to me. I don’t know if these photos are going to do the 10-inch Gosho dolls justice (It’s hard to photograph flocking), but if you are interested in Japanese lore and you love candy, there is a particularly sweet Junior Mints figure with your name on it. Super Rad is currently working on an artist series of the Horton figures, but it was a particular art toy that David and Simone were proudest to show off: Super Rad Toys has the exclusive license to produce the iconic female figures of Patrick Nagel. Click on the Super Rad Toys heading to go to the post and check her out. Then go grab a Duran Duran album and compare…

Muju World - I bought a couple of little glass mushrooms :)

This is my custom Kathie Olivas Hazel entitled "Til the End of the World", which was my contribution to the Zerostigmata Benefit Collective in Naples, Italy, devoted to raising awareness of Sandoff Syndrome. This piece is dedicated to Mattia Fagnoni.

I envisioned this piece to be a haven where Mattia is not suffering and can play to his heart's content. His father built him the ultimate tree house out of an old tree, protected by a cute wood dryad, where he can drink juice, eat sandwiches and read comic books. Mattia also has a secret treasure chest that holds everything that is dear to him inside of it. If you look hard enough, you may find it. Mattia also loves SCC Napoli, his favorite soccer team. His two best friends are Hubert and Cofield, his stuffed bears. Cofield has been naughty so he is strapped to Mattia's trusty boat. Hubert is guarding the sandwiches and snacks. Always on the lookout, Mattia is keeping watch, making sure that the sneaky Wood Octopus doesn't steal his treasure. Hopefully in this piece, Mattia will always play on, til the end of the world.

I used super sculpey, magic sculpt, wood, metal, paper, fabric and craft porcelain.

sold out on the official website, but available at urbanretro.co.uk and forbiddenplanet.

Ice-T and Mr. Felony. Sadly Mr. Felony lost an arm in the pub when I opened the packet.

Camilla D’Errico was really ballin’ with two tables in the Wondercon 2009 Artist’s Alley. Camilla is seriously one of the nicest artists out there. Her art may stop you in your travels down the alley, but you’ll want to stay to keep chatting with the enthusiastic artist herself. Camilla had a very diverse array of warez on show, but I’ll start with one thing she just seemed the most excited about: Her prototype plush, Kuro, who was brought to life from the pages of her manga, Tanpopo. Camilla had some of the plush protos on hand for pre-orders and to gauge interest. It really looks like he lept off the page: the likeness of the 2D and 3D Kuros is excellent. We gave it a thumbs up.

Camilla also had a new edition of Tanpopo, which was larger in measurement and page-count and contains a plot twist that diverges from the original story. There were several new prints and some clothes and accessories, too. Another item she was stoked about was her new Gelaskin, which didn’t make it to Wondercon, but may be available at next week’s Sweet Surrender show at Gallery1988. Camilla told us that the work she’s doing for that show is “the best ever.” She acknowledged that such a statement is rare to come from an artist, but in this case, she swears it’s true. She wants everyone to come down to the San Francisco opening on Friday, March 6th. She’ll be the extroverted artist with the extremely detailed paintings. Be there.

UK artist Jon Burgerman has built a strong reputation through his unique and colourful artworks of swooping, intertwining lines and hyper-emotional characters. Working across a variety of mediums ranging from drawing and painting to animation and toy design, his art retains a hand-drawn quality infused with a sense of British self-deprecation and modern-day anxiety. His art has been featured in publications all over the world and is in the permanent collections of The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Science Museum in London, England. Jon Burgerman currently lives in Nottingham, in the East Midlands of the UK, which is famous for Robin Hood and lace.

This is an amazing set. It's technical nerdy and beautiful!

The work of Doll Artist Charles Stephan of Charles Creature Cabinet is shown in a Solo Show. The exhibition is in Rotterdam City at Designer Toy store FA Nieuwenhuyzen and runs from 28 February to 28 March 2009. All his ball-jointed dolls & designer toys are on display there. On Saturday February 28th there was a “Meet & Greet the artist” and an Alice Cherry Blossom Qee/Toy2R signing session
