Traps for controlling plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar) in an organic apple orchard

This structure is part of the historic Vermont Design/Build Movement as featured in the Robert Hull Fleming Museum's 2008 exhibition, Architectural Improvement.

This is from the neck-down project at the start of the year, renovating the house of a lady named Juanita. (Neck-down is when the whole Rural Studio joins in on one project of urgent need, not really involving any design (ie the 'head'), and we all work together really fast to complete it)

2008 Design Build

2008 Design Build

Construction on this 2400 s.f. (267 sq. meter) modestly budgeted, green design-build project began after completing a large lot subdivision with the City of Austin and required all new utilities during construction.

In addition to a spatially expansive interior with 11' ceilings (2.67 sq. meter) , we incorporated both North facing and South facing roofdecks of 400 s.f. each (44.5 sq. meter), 800 s.f. of covered outdoor living space (8.89 sq. meter) on the ground floor and two huge cantilevered Master Bedroom window spaces.

In front, there is a street-facing covered front porch off the Master Bedroom and a sculptural storage room on the ground floor that the Clients anointed "il Ferro Tartaruga" (the Steel Turtle) and which is outfitted for a future Jacuzzi. This space is a built experiment of the Firm's research into parametric modeling, planarization routines and digital fabrication. All the steel was modeled in 3D allowing it to be all shop cut with no in-field cuts.

A super minimalist approach leveraged the structural engineering into creating extra-ordinary outdoor spaces, while a compact plan allows the indoor spaces to naturally brush up against the building envelope and outside spaces.

This is a breezy and liveable addition to a home in the North Austin Brentwood neighborhood.

A lofted living/work space with vaulted ceiling and north facing skylights mediates between the new flat roofed living space while at the same time creating a comfortable courtyard scheme.

Exterior lighting under the living volume soffit creates a festive almost boutique atmosphere for gatherings and celebrations.

The zinc clad living volume just peeks out over the existing bungalow and nestles rather nicely and efficiently against both the existing structure and the new flat roofed living volume.

The project was inspired by the classic work of the California Modernist WIlliam Wurster.

This is Andrew and Juanita, and some of her family, when we gave back her house to her at the end of the neck-down project.

The Sister Schubert Bakery produces a variety of popular frozen yeast rolls for retail and food service markets. The 104,000 s.f. facility, constructed in 2007, includes freezer and production space with insulated metal panels throughout to achieve thermal and sanitary requirements for food processing. The structural steel is galvanized and includes many stainless and aluminum components to resist corrosion. Explosion-proof construction methods were used in several areas of the building. Gray-I.C.E. Builders was selected by Gap, Inc. for a 6,700 s.f. open store phased remodel project at their Banana Republic Glendale, California location.

The scope included new floors, cash wrap, feature walls and new paint. In order to have as little disruption as possible to the on-going business, the Gray-I.C.E. team worked nights to execute the project within the 5 week timeframe.

(or rather, the $25k house as we did go over budget - but a 1 bed version can be built for $20k...)
