Stratford is a city on the Avon River in Perth County in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with a population of 30,886 as of 2011.

When the area was first settled by Europeans in 1832, the townsite and the river were named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England. It is the seat of Perth County. Stratford was incorporated as a town in 1859 and as a city in 1886. The first mayor was John Corry Wilson Daly and the current mayor is Dan Mathieson. The swan has become a symbol of the city. Each year twenty-four white swans are released into the Avon River. The town is well known for being the home of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

The town was originally a railway junction. Furniture manufacturing became an important part of the local economy by the twentieth century. In 1933 a general strike, started by the furniture workers and led by the Communist Workers' Unity League, marked the last time the army was deployed to break a strike in Canada.

The Stratford Shakespeare Festival began in 1953 when, on July 13, actor Alec Guinness spoke the first lines of the first play produced by the festival.

The annual festival now draws thousands of theatre goers and tourists to the area each year. Acclaimed performers including Alec Guinness, Christopher Plummer, Dame Maggie Smith, William Hutt and William Shatner have performed at the festival. The Canadian novelist and playwright Timothy Findley performed in the first season, and had an ongoing relationship with the festival, eventually moving to Stratford in 1997.

The world-renowned festival takes place in four theatres throughout the city: the Festival Theatre, the Avon Theatre, Tom Patterson Theatre and the Studio Theatre.

This man is leaving his three adorable girls and beautiful wife for the next year so I asked him if I could take his family portraits for him. They didn't want to at first because they didn't want to put me out!! I finally convinced his wife and we met tonight. This was my favorite of the night.

In the early years of the war, many planets in the Olmara system were left untouched. The primitive natives still believed in the arts of witchcraft and shamanism. These troopers were deployed to subdue the natives and convert them into hardened wariors. This led to the first Human - Alien squad. These troopers are equipped with the latest in flame-throwing technology, a semi-auto PDW, and a backup magnum for minimal protection. Fear them, taste the horror, smell the despair, watch your life rot within a pit of hallowed nightmare. Prepare . . . to die.

HMS WESTMINSTER SAILS FOR COUGAR ’13 DEPLOYMENT

Royal Navy warship HMS Westminster sailed from Portsmouth today (August 13) as part of the Cougar ’13 deployment to the Mediterranean and Gulf which involves thousands of RN, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary personnel.

The long-planned deployment will see elements of the UK’s Response Force Task Group (RFTG) – the naval force formed under the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review – hone its world-class maritime skills thousands of miles from home through exercises with a number of key allies.

HMS Westminster, a Type 23 frigate, is among ten RN and RFA ships taking part in Cougar ’13, including helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious which sailed from Portsmouth yesterday (12/8).

On completion of the exercise Westminster will deploy to the Middle East and Indian Ocean as part of the RN’s standing commitment in the region.

She will provide reassurance to the UK’s allies in the region, conducting maritime exercises with other nations and carrying out maritime security and counter-piracy patrols. She will also be ready to react to situations such as humanitarian aid and war-fighting as directed by the UK Government.

Her Commanding Officer, Captain Hugh Beard, said: “It has taken a tremendous effort to get us ready and it is with immense pride that we sail from Portsmouth for the challenges of operations in the Middle East.”

HMS Westminster will be operating in familiar territory – she spent several months in the region last year and hit the headlines after a £14m drugs bust in the Indian Ocean.

Operations Officer Lieutenant Commander Simon Tappin is among many of her 170 ship’s company making the return trip. “The ship’s company are very experienced and capable and will carry forward this confidence into our current mission to make it a success,” he said.
