This photograph tells us a lot about Australia. A relatively inexpensive little house sits right next door to a large Georgian manor-style house complete with a magnificent fenced garden. Neither of the residents feels threatened by the other.
Despite the rhetoric that often comes from that failing empire that claims to be the world's best democracy, Australia can lay claim to being one of the world's true democratic societies. We have plenty of historic problems to be sure (namely that we live on stolen land - that is the tragedy of indigenous people's everywhere), but Australians have always aspired to an egalitarian society. We have a universal healthcare and education system, were the first to adopt the eight hour working day and a "living wage" (The Harvester Judgment of 1907) and people can live anywhere their budget can allow. We are also (despite minority racist claims otherwise) a proudly multicultural society.
Women got the vote in Australia in 1902 (just after Federation), although in South Australia women were voting in 1894! This didn't happen in the USA until 1920, and full sufferage came to Britain in 1928. Not only that, Australia has a successful compulsory voting system (forcing people to take responsibility as citizens) and preferential voting which measures the true depth of political commitment (i.e. no vote is wasted).

Karl-Marx-Hof is a municipal residential complex with 1382 apartments in Heiligenstadt, a neighbourhood of the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling. It was built in the years 1927-30.
Karl-Marx-Hof is a so-called Gemeindebau, which is the German word for "municipality building" (pl. Gemeindebauten). It`s one of the best-known Gemeindebauten in Vienna.
"Gemeindebauten have become an important part of the architecture and culture of Vienna since the 1920s. Up to 1918, the housing conditions of Vienna's growing working class were appalling by modern standards. When the Social Democratic Party of Austria gained control of the municipal administration during Austria's First Republic (1918-1934) (so called "Red Vienna"), it began the project of improving living conditions for workers. A large number of Gemeindebauten, usually large residential estates, were built during that time. Including those buildings that were finished after the events of February 1934, 64,000 apartments where completed, which created housing space for about 220,000 people. Apartments were assigned on the basis of a point system favoring families and less affluent citizens.
The classic interwar Gemeindebauten typically have a main entrance with a large gate, through which one enters into a yard. Inside, there are trees and some greenery, where children can play without having to go out on the street. Apartments are accessed from the inside.
This fortress-like structure made the buildings adaptable to military use. Several Gemeindebauten in Vienna, most notably the Karl-Marx-Hof, were sites of fighting during the Austrian Civil War of February 1934, when they were defended as Social Democratic Party strongholds." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemeindebau

I was also an employee of the NY Telephone company at the time. I was an ESS Tech (electronic switching systems). Mainframe. Pearl Street. My job was to give dial tone to the phones at MSG for the event. Over 10k phones went in.

i found this in my hotel room in denver and i have never seen white m&m's before. we are here to cover the democratic national convention. note that for security reasons apples aren't allowed in the press centre. they might be used as weapons. you can get away with bananas though.

The Reichstag, a national symbol of Germany, was built between 1884 and 1894 in the Neo-Renaissance style in the Tiergarten district on the left bank of the Spree River, according to plans by the architect Paul Wallot. From 1995 to 1999, the Reichstag was fundamentally redesigned by Norman Foster for permanent use as a parliament building. Since then, the German Bundestag has met there.

as i was moving to get closer this guy opened his eyes and looked at me, so waved and moved on. i usually only feel bad if the other person knows i'm interested in shooting their plight, as if that somehow magnifies it. if they don't know, i have no qualms.
there's probably a contradiction in there somewhere, but it's hard to explain.
