i made this with the Delkin Fat Gecko camera mount:
Shooting Milky Way out of a flying aircraft is always a challenge. To be successful, you need smooth conditions, the correct flight path and good timing. In other words, you need lots of luck, as most of this is out of the photographers control...
This image was such a lucky moment. At 36'000ft, over Korinthos in Greece, while heading home from a Cairo night turnaround flight. I was able to capture Milky Way in the constellation Cygnus.
Despite the good flight conditions, I only got 3 exposures with pinpoint stars, out of a sequence of roghly 200 shots. Yes it is that difficult. As it was my lucky night, One of these 3 exposures also captured a shooting star...

Dad once said that there was no such thing as a perfect tool. “Hammers are great at pounding nails. They don’t work so well with screws.” I wanted to make an image that spoke to that. And I have been itching to get some light through the new Z 24-120mm.
The Westcott Mega Apollo is... BIG. I wanted to have enough light to fill it and still have some left over for creative aperture control, so I used the two SB-5000s in my locker and then added one of my personal SB-910. Because the SB-910 isn't a WR-10/11 series flash, the CLS trigger had to be optical. As usual, I used the SB-500 on camera to activate the COMMANDER menu buried within the Z9 SHOOTING menu. (The only other flash that can activate that option is the SB-5000 and all mine were tied up making light.)
I used a small piece of white foam-core as a reflector to recycle some light and bounce it into the dark side of the hammer.

Those reckless young fools...
It's normally me in the driving seat but this shot is the reason I first wanted a car mount. It's been a long time coming.
The car: a mid 60's Ford Zephyr ('67 MkIII I think)
The models: Kellie and Craig
Strobist: diffused SB-600 in car dead centre between camera and models; bare SB-800 dead centre behind models for rim.
Moving car, 30sec, straight out of camera
This image was taken from the flght deck of an airliner cruising at 35'000 feet over southern France.
Airborne astro photography is probably one of the most frustrating things you can do. Even under good conditions, I normally get about 98% blurred exposures. If I expose longer than 5 seconds, the success rate drops to virtually zero.
However, if you are lucky enough to capture a sharp image, the result is very rewarding. That's why I keep trying. In this case, I was able to get 2 usable shots out of an automated sequence of 250 exposures.
Below average, but good enough.

Cameras and Cookies! The wife wanted to bake and asked if I wanted to make a few pictures... and try out her new cookie recipe. YEA!! King Arthur Baking's lead pastry baker, Andrea Quillen, came up with a brilliant recipe, "... cookies sandwiched with dulce de leche — a riff on the iconic alfajor. Perfumed with coffee, spice, and a hint of pisco, the cookies perfectly complement the rich, caramelized notes of their filling."

The background was a purple colored foam sheet covered in glitter. I can't find it, but I'm pretty sure that idea was totally ripped off from Joey Terrill. Thanks Joey! The slight tradition in the background illumination was created by the use of a gobo to block some of the light striking the glitter covered sheet.

The mourning doves came by for a quick visit. Several of my visitors were kind enough to stick around to help me make a few pictures.
Until I can get them to understand, "Hold that pose!" I think I'll have to rely on the 120 frames per second still image capture speed of the Z9.
I have been asked, "At 120 fps, why not just capture video and pull a frame from that?"
Good Question!
The 120 fps video capture in the Z9 is 'only' 4K. Or about 8 million pixels per frame.
The 120fps still capture mode of the Z9 is 11 million pixels per frame... about 60% more information than a 4K video frame grab.
...and then there is the shutter speed thing in video. Most videos captures will look most natural... most fluid... most 'normal to our eye' if the shutter speed is set near 2x the frame rate. Faster shutter speeds cause the video to have a choppy looking playback. As you can imagine, capturing the movement of the wings at 250th of a second would yield VERY different results than seen here.

I fall in love a thousand times aday. Usually for about 1/125 of a second at a time. I don’t believe in long exposures or long relationships. I am absolutely enamored by blur. If you get too close, you’ll become poetry
-Xien
From my three weeks in Namibia—
I shot 27525 captures. That is after pitching the Beverly out of focus ones and the ones where the camera decided to take a picture whilst I was walking.
I chose this one because I have been repeatedly been asked “how how close did you get?”
This close. About 12 feet. This is at 260mm on the 100-400mm S Nikkor. If I got any closer I would not become poetry, I’d be lunch.
The system in which I came up with to not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up with my ipad. Worked swimmingly. I shot on Delkin black 850 & 150gb cards. Which is the key to all of this fast read and fast downloads. I brought three 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. I used the Lexar WorkflowGo2. I was very hesitant to buy anything Lexar. I have had less than stellar luck with their cards. That said the workflowGo did the job.
This is one of a bazillion Lion captures I have. I have images of Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Caracals, Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, Wildebeests, two types of Baboons, two types of Zebra, Brown Hyenas, Wild Dogs, Warthogs, Oryx, Mongoose, Read Heart beast, Springbok, Sable, Eland, Black Faced Impala, Impala, Crocodiles, Kudo, Waterbuck, Dik-Dik (so I did take Dik-Dik pics), Steenbok,Scrub Hare, Rock Hyrax, Side Winder snakes, African Ground Squirrels, Cape Penguin and so many birds I can’t even begin to name them and those are just the animals I can remember.
AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images.
With that said-
One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect. You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.
The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.
I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.
Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.
I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. 1/1250 of a second ISO 1800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

The best way to describe the approach that boxers take to train in Cuba is it’s full contact ballet.
I love the moments of spontaneous observed unawareness. I become invisible to the person in front of my camera when photographing boxers and dancers. Their focus on what they are doing is absolute. Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still

From my three weeks in Namibia—
What I love about photography the most is that even though we are all, as Einstein posited, inertial observers of any given moment and depending on where we are standing when we view the “moment” we all see it differently. With a photograph no matter where we are initially observing the image we all see the frozen moment exactly the same way.
For me the best photographs are the ones that feel as if we are in the space between a moment. Traveling to next but not there yet. Leaving the moment we were in yet not completely gone from it.

What I love about Black & White photographs is that they’re more like reading the book than seeing the movie.
— Jennifer Price
From my three weeks in Namibia—
Light, gesture, color are the key elements of every photograph. But when do you know that an image is meant to be a a black and white image? The answer is a lot simpler than the general song and dance you hear the pixel pundits put forth. When the cold gets in the way of the gesture. Then it is time to abstract out the color from the image so the gesture remains.
I have included both color and BW.
There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it.
Photography is an act of love. When I shoot I fall in love thousands a time in a day. I do not believe in long exposures and and long relationships.
Always shoot it now. It won't be the same when you go back..

Nik filters
A return trip to the wedge produced some fun shots. When I got home and started to look, the Nik filters looked so good with these!
If you take a picture of a human that does not make him noble, there is no reason to take this picture. That is my way of seeing things.

I think Salgado’s quote says all that needs to be said.

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

Another from the “how how close did you get?” collection
This close. Again about 10-12 feet. This is at 140mm on the 100-400mm S Nikkor. If I got any closer… This is as the sun was setting. Hence the beautiful light. Which the subject, in this case the male lion, was interrupting
Shot with the Nikon Z6II using the 100- 400mm S lens no 1.4 Tele converter attached. Post processed wit NX Studio and Photoshop CC Beta.and DxO’s NiK collection plug-ins.

From my three weeks in Namibia—
I am by practice a wonderer. I am enamored not just having one disciple of artistic pursuit. I wand to be adept at as many of them as my time on this mortal coil allows me.
Astral or “night sky” photography has always been something I try to think of anything else to do before that. In North America there are too many obstacles, light pollution, traveling to really really isolated places and having to get up a 3am stabling around in the dark.
Then there is trying to get light (light painting) on the terrestrial part of the image.
All of those issues went away in Namibia. This image is two exposures. One of the sand dune at sunset and one right after the sun has set.
I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”
I shot this with the Z6III 50mm S Nikkor f1.2. The dune at 1/5000 of a second at f1.8 ISO 200 and the star field at 10sec at f1.8 ISO 5000. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.
