DON'T STOP there - Pull to the right and stop !

G

4:39 PM. The fire truck is responding thru a very busy intersection (Los Alamitos Blvd. & Katella Ave.) with heavy traffic, enroute to an emergency "Code 3" (red lights and siren in use). Because of stopped traffic blocking the northbound lanes, the emergency vehicle temporarily drives (safely) northbound in the southbound lanes; the yellow sign warns to "watch for opposing traffic".

Even though the firefighters are 'legal' and the red lights and siren are easy to see and hear, when the light turns green for that car the driver proceeds across the intersection, as if the lane is open... Instead of, as the California motor vehicle code directs...

"VC 21806(a) : ... the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the highway, clear of any intersection, and thereupon shall stop and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed."

This driver then compounds the action by stopping right where you see it now, blocking the fire truck. Sure it can be a shock to drivers, but much less so if you are driving defensively, know the rules of the road, and heed them. Do this and get caught can result in lightening your cash count by the better part of $500.00, minimum.

BTW, Since we were stopped I planned to photograph the entire incident... but when the light turned green the driver behind me drove into the back of my vehicle. "But the light turned green", she said !

That fire truck is from my former station, just around the corner.

Luckily, the driver of the Acura noticed the turn signal on the Escalade, and didn't assume no one would try something so stupid.

You know those signs on the back of semi-trailer trucks? The ones that say "This truck makes wide turns"? This is a wide turn that went wrong. The driver of the car pulled into the right-hand turn lane, right into the truck's blind spot. The truck was in the next lane over, intending to turn right -- which he couldn't do from the turn lane, because that would mean dragging his rear wheels over the curb and taking out the flower bed. Either he didn't have his turn signal on, or it wasn't working, or the driver didn't see it. The light changed, and both vehicles started to turn. CUE THE SOUND OF CRUNCHING METAL AND BREAKING GLASS. The driver sounded his horn, the truck stopped instantly, and the driver climbed out the passenger door, shaken but OK, muttering "My wife will kill me when she sees the car." Various rutuals were commencing as I left involving police, cameras, insurance companies, etc. Something to think about next time you pull up alongside a truck at an intersection.

Well, here is a sad update on my three-week old Toyota Prius V. On Thursday, December 6, 2012, driving home from visiting a friend, I hit a deer. It was 5:15 pm--full dark at this time of year. I was on the road where I live, maybe three minutes from my driveway. I was driving approximately 35 mph in a 45 mph zone (I don't like driving after dark, for good reason!), when I caught a glimpse of movement at the driver's side, in front of the car. I braked, hard, & ran into the second of two deer running, full-tilt, across the road. Although it felt like I just tapped the deer, my car sustained damage to the front bumper, fog lamps, headlamps, hood, &, probably, the driver's side fender. I'm sure repair cost will exceed my $500 deductible & will, probably, cost several thousand dollars. I'll be taking the car in for an estimate on Monday. On the good news side, I am fine; I barely felt the impact & the car is driveable. The deer didn't fare as well. In the past fifteen years that I've lived in this rural area, I've had four collisions with deer--two in which the deer ran into my car & two of which I ran into the deer. This most recent accident made me feel just awful--embarrassed & like a lousy driver, as well as very vulnerable on the road. I regained a bit of perspective, when I attended a neighborhood party & chatted with some of the folks there. One shared with me that she had picked up her car from repair after a deer collision &, three days later, hit another deer! She went back to the body shop & asked if they guaranteed their work. She showed the damage & said the dents had recurred. I guess it's important to always keep one's sense of humor! I still have my former car, so I will have a safe, familiar car to drive while the Prius is in the shop. I am thankful that the accident was minor! I am considering trying to locate a defensive driving class. I brake, instinctively, but would like to learn to swerve, as well.

On December 12th, I got the estimate for repairs & it's impressive--almost $5,000 & an expected 8 days in the shop. In doing some research, I see that the majority of deer collisions occur in the months of October-December, usually at dawn or dusk, & that deer, most often, travel in pairs. Lucky me! For the record, I found out that swerving is, usually, not considered advisable, because it might result in roll-over or a second collision. I, also, discovered that I am required to fill out an accident report, if repairs will cost more than $1,000. I wish I could give up all night driving, but it's really not feasible in my area. The best news I can think of (in addition to the facts that I am fine, my car is repairable, & I have insurance coverage!) is that I like the auto body shop I use; at least, it's good business for them!

Two updates--My car was in the shop for more than 3 weeks & repairs cost more than $7,000. About 3 weeks after I got my car back, my friend Duane was driving at the same location where I had the accident. He was using his low beams, because a car was approaching from the opposite direction, when a deer ran across the road from the right-hand side (mine came from the left). If there had been a second deer, as there was in my case, he said he felt sure he would have hit it. There was just no time to react. I had felt deficient as a driver, but, perhaps, it was, truly, an accident!

We spent the morning being taught defensive driving techniques by the Italian Carabinieri.

In this picture they are actually driving in reverse out of trouble, then doing a 180 degree turn before driving off - all as fast as possible. The driver can't turn around when reversing because of his body armour and is depending on his rear view mirrors and the other guys for all around observation...

In this case, it's just a tractor being towed ahead of us, and no real threat at all. But ironically, and tragically, a couple of days later, within a mile of where this picture was taken (by Jo Ann - I was driving..), a young girl was killed by a drunk driver going the wrong way on this very road. He wasn't driving an eighteen wheeler, but he didn't need to be. A head-on at highway speeds is never going to end well.. Unless you're the drunk..

It seems like it's always the case that the stinking drunk 65 year old going the wrong way on the Interstate walks away (albeit in cuffs..) and the innocent 18 year old driver is killed. Yes - I know it's because they are drunk, and don't tense up, or whatever, but damn - is there no justice in the universe?

She probably wasn't experienced enough to have any idea that something like this could ever happen, much less what to do. Odds are, there wasn't much she could have done anyway. The car in front of her probably realized what was happening and swerved out of the way at the last second, and there he was..

I hope she was being a bad girl, and texting as she followed the guy who swerved. People do it all the time. They rely on the guy ahead of them to not do anything foolish, and keep them in their peripheral vision, like a visual anchor, as they "send a quick text". If that's what she was doing, she may have been spared a horrifying last moment of consciousness...

Of course, it's equally likely that if she hadn't been texting, she would have had time to react, and swerved out of the way too. Because people do crazy things.. All the time..

I can't tell you how many narrow escapes I've had, but I can tell you this - expect the unexpected.. Always keep an escape strategy in mind when you're in heavy traffic. Play "what if" constantly in your head.. What if that wheel comes off the truck beside you.. What if that jackass doesn't look before he changes lanes..

What if.. Believe me, it's much better than "If only".....

Went to the municipal court today to take care of my ticket. Freaking $112 and I haven't even paid for my defensive driving class yet. WTF is that? Ehh. At least I can afford to pay it right now.

Finally got new work shoes! I walked into Payless and ended up getting the first pair I tried on. It was lucky because they were on sale, a perfect fit (my feet have almost a full half-size difference), annnddd it was the last day of bogo (buy one get one, for those of you who never watch TV) so I got a pair of perfect black patent pumps for $10.

Overall, excellent.

You know what isn't excellent? Greedy motherfuckers. Yesterday I waited on a party of 10 people. Their gratuity, 15%, was $13. The man who paid left me another $15 on top of that. Well tonight he called and said he hadn't realized the gratuity was included and he wants the $15 he tipped over back! He said he didn't "realize there was a gratuity" and he wouldn't have tipped that $15 if he'd known so now he wants it refunded to him. Sorry but on our credit car receipts it's VERY clear that there's a gratuity. It looks like this...

TOTAL $20

GRATUITY $3

+ ADDITIONAL TIP ______________

TOTAL ______________

So yeah. Sounds to me like he just changed his mind and that pisses me off. You just don't do that. Now I might have to give that $15 back which is bullshit. I guarantee you that money means more to me than it does to that old man, if he can afford to take his family out for a $100 dinner. It just makes me angry. The balls of some people...
