Fort McHenry in Baltimore is full of history. I was at the Fort for the War of 1812 Defenders' Day and found this great old wagon.
The American Flag was flying high during Defenders Day at Historic Fort McHenry in Baltimore when I caught this shot.
For a great bit of living history, visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Defenders Day is a must.
Defenders Day "commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812, an event which would lead to the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States."" (wikipedia)
While the events of September 11, 2001 will always be remembered by those of us who were there to witness the horror, but a little known fact is that September 11 was not the first time on that date that America was attacked.
On September 11, 1814 the British landed in Baltimore in preparation for what would be become known as the battle of North Point as part of the war of 1812.
It was the famous battle over Ft. McHenry and on September 12, 1814 the battle began.
It was during THIS battle that Francis Scott Key would write and compose "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the British laid siege to Baltimore.
Over 40,000 British troops and 31,000 Maryland Militia engaged in land and sea combat. With the British marching on the city of Baltimore, the militia dug in and after days of vicious street to street fighting and constant naval bombardment, the militia eventually stood their ground and halted the advance of the British.
Defenders Day is a state holiday in Maryland, and every Sept 12th there is a big festival with the Naval Band and a historic re-enactment of the battle complete with dressed soldiers, musket volleys and canon fire over the Harbor coming from Ft. McHenry.
If you are ever in Maryland on September 12th you really should check it out, it is quite fun and very informative. there is something amazing about sitting on the site where our National Anthem was penned watching the cannons fire over the harbor and culminating with a fireworks right over the fort...quite humbling and spectacular really.
This is a shot from that fireworks finale
Re-enactors camp out for the weekend at Fort McHenry during Defenders' Day. I caught this shot shortly before storms were supposed to roll in, so many of the tents were already taken down. The children still enjoyed a snack under the big tree near the fort though.
In 1814, Fort McHenry, in Baltimore, Defended the port from the British attack. The defense was commemorated at Defenders' Day at the fort today with re-enactors, fireworks and canon firing. I caught this shot at the fort today with my X100.
During the 1812 Defenders' Day at Fort McHenry, the 1812 United States Flag was lowered, switched, then raised again by fort visitors.

North Point State Battlefield celebrates the national story of bravery displayed more than 200 years ago at the Battle of North Point. This turning point in the War of 1812 proved the tenacity of the citizens of Baltimore and their fight for American independence.
