Yahalom unit is the most elite unit of the Engineering Corps and one of the IDF's elite units. This is the professional body that provides a solution for operational purposes in sabotage, bomb disposal, dealing with the threat of tunnels and the like.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the last week of August 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.
In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.
Unseasonably heavy rains caused water levels to rise, resulting in local flooding.
It would be necessary to bring in pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.

Grain Tower Battery was completed in 1855 and is similar in design to the earlier Napoleonic East Coast Martello towers. The tower is located in the Thames Estuary off Grain, and is reached by foot, via a causeway at low tide.
Originally the tower was intended to be armed with 3 smooth bore guns in open emplacements on the roof. It was rearmed in both World Wars and was altered to acommodate new guns. In 1914 a floating boom was put across the mouth of the River Medway, from Sheerness, to the Grain Tower. This boom was an anti invasion defence to stop enemy ships entering the river. The chain that anchored the boom to the tower still remains today, wrapped around its base. In 1912 two 4.7 QF (Quick Firing) guns were moved from the nearby Wing Battery to the tower. Then in 1940 twin 6 pounder QF guns were installed, the 2 storey barrack accomodation block was built, and the 4 storey observation tower was added. The battery was disarmed in the 50's and left to the elements. Currently the tower is up for sale, waiting for any potential buyer to purchase it.

Israel captured it in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.
From the hill near the fort we were able to see an old wall that extends for some distance. It seems to have been a fairly large defensive wall; we're not sure whether this was for a local tribe, or whether this was an Ottoman outpost.

The "Herev" (Sword) Battalion, comprised of Druze, Jewish and Christian soldiers, are an elite unit specially trained in the Northern Command.
56 years ago, 30 Druze soldiers joined the ranks of the IDF – the first generation of official recruits. Since then 83% of Druze youth enlist to the IDF’s – more than the numbers of Jewish youth. The “Sword” (Herev) Battalion, comprised almost entirely of Druze soldiers, specializes in the Northern Command and is currently training in the Golan Heights.

The Panavia Tornado is a family of twin-engine combat aircraft, which was jointly developed by the United Kingdom, West Germany and Italy. There are three primary versions of the Tornado; the Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) fighter-bomber, the suppression of enemy air defences Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance) and the Tornado ADV (Air Defence Variant) interceptor. It is one of the world's most sophisticated and capable interdiction and attack aircraft, with a large payload, long range and high survivability.
The Tornado was originally designed as a low-level supersonic ground attack bomber, capable of taking off and landing in short distances. This requires good high-speed and low-speed flying characteristics. In general, an aircraft which is designed to fly at high speeds usually has poor low-speed characteristics. In order to achieve the desired high-speed performance, an aircraft has a highly swept or ‘delta’ wing platform. However, these wing designs are very inefficient at low speeds where unswept wing planforms are required. In order for an aircraft to be operated efficiently at both high and low speeds, variable wing sweep is a desirable feature; this was incorporated into the Tornado design.
When the wings are swept back, the Tornado IDS increases its high-speed low-level capability by reducing drag. When sweeping, the wings partially slide into the fuselage, reducing the exposed wing area. This gives the aircraft a low gust response in turbulent low-level winds. This not only makes flight much more comfortable for the aircrew but makes the aircraft a more stable platform from which to aim and deliver unguided weapons at low level.
The aircraft was designed to be land-based and operate from large airfields that were considered to be vulnerable to aerial attack. Therefore, during the development of the aircraft, short field landing capability was considered essential in order to enable the aircraft to operate from short strips on potentially damaged runways and taxiways. With the wings swept fully forwards the Tornado IDS generates greater lift because of the increased exposed wing area and the utility of full-span flaps and slats. This gives greater lift at lower speeds, reducing the minimum landing speed required and therefore giving shorter landing distances.
The cockpit is of conventional design with a centre stick and left hand throttles. In general, when the pilot wants to fly at low speed, a cockpit selection lever is used to sweep the wings forward. This maximises lift. When flying faster the wings are swept further back. In flight the Tornado GR4 uses three sweep angles - 25, 45 and 67 degrees, with a corresponding speed range appropriate for each angle. Sweep may also change automaticaly to accommodate different store configurations, as these directly affect lift and drag characteristics.
Once part of the defences for RAF Martlesham Heath Airfield, the full height entrance and Loopholes have been blocked up. The Type-22 Pillbox is a regular hexagon in plan with a Loopholes in five of the sides and a Full or Half-Height Entrance, sometimes with a porch in the other. The Loopholes are suitable for rifles or light machine guns. Some have a low entrance that allows an extra Loopholes above. Each wall is about 6ft long and it was generally built to the bullet proof standard of 12in thick, although shellproof versions with walls around 40in thick were also built. Internally there is either a Y or T Shaped Anti-Ricochet Wall (the top of the Y/T nearest the entrance) the internal wall also helps support the roof. The Type-22 Pillbox is the second most common pillbox type with 1,347 recorded as being extant. It is easily confused with the common Type-24, which is an irregular hexagon and the less common octagonal shape.
