River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the third week of September 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.

Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again.

It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.

Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway!

Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days.

The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water?

The following sequences show how the guys reinforced the river bed/bank: spreading out, and stitching in a membrane, layout out wire creels, filled with medium sized stones, welded shut, and laid out in grids, particularly the sections alongside the road/bank side.

IDF Desert Reconnaissance Battalion at the Urban Warfare Center

Last week, the Desert Reconnaissance Battalion conducted a drill in the Urban Warfare Training Center, simulating fighting in populated cities. The drill was conducted to assure maximum efficiency while fighting in urban centers by focusing solely on hostile targets.

The Desert Reconnaissance Battalion, also known as "the natural detectives" is comprised almost entirely of Bedouins whom, though exempt from service, volunteered to serve in the IDF. These soldiers use their unique abilities to track down infiltrators and other threats in the vast Israeli desert. April 2, 2012

Construction started in 1877 as one of a series of defences to protect the strategically important docks at Chatham. After a few setbacks and delays, the fort was completed in 1892 and the finished construction was considerably smaller than the original plan. The only excavations to be dug were those of the ditch, from which the earth was used to cover the exposed structures inside the fort. The ditch was concrete lined and the final feature to be installed was the rare rolling drawbridge.

The fort was purely defensive, and was never armed (like most 'forts' of the time), but would have been armed and manned in the event of a national crisis. Ironically, by the time the series of fortifications were completed they were outdated and obsolete.
