Another of my experiments. This photo was taken in colour on quite shallow DOF. When converting to bw, I accidently removed the blues which gave the photo this funny texture. I quite like this dirty, messy looking background - like an old, abused print.

Last week, UK defence personnel and UK companies attended the the Association of the US Army’s (AUSA) 2014 annual meeting and exposition in Washington DC. This year’s delegation was led by, the British Army’s Commander for Force Development and Capability. Led by Lieutenant General Mark Poffley, attendance included a significant portion of the British Army’s 100-strong presence in the US - also in town for their annual conference at the British Embassy (BASCON).

British industry was represented by over 30 UK companies and subsidiaries including Airbus, BAE Systems, Chemring, Cobham, D3O, JCB, MBDA Missile Systems, Thales UK, Ultra Electronics, QinetiQ and others.

On Tuesday, a reception at the British ambassador’s residence celebrated the unique relationship between both nation’s armies and the close co-operation between our defence industries.

Throughout the rest of the year, members of the British Army’s 100-strong presence in the US are located throughout the USA (in over 30 states) working alongside their US Army colleagues in exchange and liaison posts. Lieutenant General Mark Poffley, the British Army’s Commander for Force Development and Capability, was the senior UK attendee.

Their roles cover all aspects of the Army relationship from testing equipment at Aberdeen proving ground, helicopter pilot training, developing new concepts and doctrine at the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), to key command positions in the 82nd Airborne Division and the US Army’s III Corps.

At BASCON, attendees heard from speakers that included General Daniel Allyn, the current Vice Chief of Staff of the US Army, and the British Ambassador to the US, Sir Peter Westmacott.

Now You See Them, Now You Don’t: Experts of Camouflage

The main principle of camouflage is the idea of blending in with your environment, which is usually achieved with camouflage clothing. Until recently, most units in the IDF were not aware of the power and effectiveness of utilizing nature itself as a disguise.

The Second Lebanon War pointed out certain weaknesses in the use of complicated disguises, since in those days they were mostly used by special units. Therefore, two years ago the IDF Anti-Terror School stepped up to the challenge and founded a department to teach all IDF combat units the art of camouflage.

At the beginning it was hard to draw the fighter’s attention to the subject,” says section commander, Sgt Albert Arklov, “but today we are swamped by the unit’s demands. There is a completely different awareness now.”

Soldiers participating in the three-week course learn everything about the optimal exploitation of nature; how to turn trees and stones in the battlefield into hiding spots, how to spot the perfect tree and how to pay attention to the most minute detail. Every minor mistake in creating a camouflaged position can lead to discovery. The size of the wood, its shape and even the direction in which the leafs project–all of these are crucial factors to creating successful camouflage.

After the trainees gathered half a forest to create their camouflaged position, they now have to apply their elaborate war-paint to their faces, hands, neck and chest. This, too, requires a lot of expertise.

Most of the instructors were in elite units themselves before they became teachers in the Anti-Terror School.

“At the end of the course the students are supposed to leave here with all the necessary knowledge to be the authority in camouflage of their units,” explains Sergeant Noam Polombo. “So we have to know how it’s like in the field, just like them. To train a fighter you need to know what it means to be a fighter.”

“If soldiers did not know to apply what they learned here, their combat level would fall dramatically. Camouflage is a critical skill in combat, which is a huge advantage on the ground. It is the recipe for victory.”

Last month, soldiers from the Elite Egot Unit took on their final test- after more than a year of training; they conducted a week of exercise in which they put all of their studying into action.

During this week, the soldiers demonstrated their abilities in camouflage, fighting in urban warfare style and much more.

The wide angle lens here used in my trembling anticipatory hands has not given a flawless image even with in body stabilisation working as best as it can. At f11 diffraction will help soften areas that were possibly not the sharpest before a small aperture was used to record them. Hand held with gloves these are not the sharpest digital images to be created. Just as I was anticipating time in the Pentland Hills Regional Park when creating these flawed images they have somehow been my initial intense focus on the images that follow and I have fallen into to editing them when better images were ready to be shared. The Sun did not allow me with the wide angle lens to escape casting a shadow on the sign if I wanted the sign to occupy much of the photographic frame. I took the opportunity of the Sun position to cast a self shadow portrait in three of the frames. Other lenses could have created a better image of the sign. Somehow editing these images has been a fuel that I could not resist.

All images have been initially edited in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to produce edits numbered 2 and 3 and then the images have been edited in Adobe Photoshop to reveal the ability there to align the sign and to create some edge details. I have now worn myself into a mist that is ready to be blown away where dream will carry me.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the last week of September 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.

Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again.

It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.

Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway!

Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days.

The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water?

As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired.

And these access ramps were proving difficult to navigate for the fully-laden dumpers/trucks.

This A250 Volvo truck cannot reverse up the muddy ramp, and is having to be towed by a CAT 3300 and nudged by a CASE CX 210.

Those towing belts are remarkably strong -- but I still wouldn't want to be standing too close to them in case they snapped!
