Last Night we celebrated the life of the late, great Chris Lighty and his birthday. On top of the Audio series narrated by my podcast hero, and friend Reggie "Combat jack" Osse. Where the legacy of Lighty is fleshed out beautifully for those whom may have not known.
Antonio M "LA" Reid is the current chairman of Epic Records. He started off as a drummer in a Cincinnati funk/rock band. In the 80's he played in the band The Deele. When The Deele broke up, Reid and his bandmate Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds started LaFace Records with the blessing of Arista Records legend Clive Davis. LaFace discovered and/or signed Usher, TLC, Toni Braxton, and Outkast. Reid succeeded Davis as head of Arista where he discovered and signed Avril Lavigne, Pink, and Ciara. In 2004 he was named president and CEO of Island Def Jam where he had a hand in building the success of Kanye, Rihanna, and the resuscitation of Maria Carey's career. This, my friend, is what we call an ear for a hit, and a serious resume.

"It's time to get ill!"
In 1986 I was 14 years old. Today I'm 36 years old. Less than 2 years ago, I went to a Beastie Boys concert. I'm sure that sometime in the next 2-4 years, as always, I will go to another. 22 years is long time for any band to stay together and continue making music and touring. And actually, i don't know how many of you would know this, but it's been more than 22 years, because before this "first" album came out, they had an EP called "Pollywog Stew" and 2 singles, "Cookie Puss" and "She's On It". They had also been together playing punk music in NYC before those even came out.
To me, the Beastie Boys will never be too old. Many bands can't stay together that long because Time is not good to them. They can't continue putting out a consistent, progressive product because they can't change with the Times. With every one of their albums, the Beasties have grown and progressed, especially on a socially conscious level. You may not know about their continual involvement in social issues, but they have worked on several different projects over the years to help humanity on many levels. They've come a long way since "Fight for your right".
So there they are, like a fine wine, aging gracefully over Time...Mission complete.
