One of the slides from r0ml's keynote that I felt I needed to remember.

DeepThoughts

I think what was frustrating to see a lot of good people go. You don't picture it, you don't imagine it, don't think it could happen. When it does, you are puzzled.

no other way to put it

Here are my other Mondays.

"Where does the sun go?"

Deepthought 2 assembly

I think what was frustrating to see a lot of good people go. You don't picture it, you don't imagine it, don't think it could happen. When it does, you are puzzled.

My son drew me a picture this evening. In case you can't tell, the object on the left is a heart.

I was initially concerned because the heart appears to be broken. I asked him why the heart was broken. His response? "Because that's how the love gets out. See all of that green fire? That's how much I love you!" (OK, so the green fire part is just proof that he's really 5 years old.)

Are broken hearts really just a way to let the love out because a whole heart just couldn't possibly contain it all?

Ah, to see things with the clarity of a child...

Should graffiti be judged on the same level as modern art? Of course not: It's way more important than that.

"What was of vital importance yesterday, holds little value if we lose the mental or physical capability to enjoy it. But like most important forces beyond our control, what we sometimes lose, frequently opens door [sic] to new opportunities."

Donald Brann, channeling Yoda.

From a series of circa-1960s D.I.Y. books called "Easi-Bild" that were published by a fellow named Donald Brann. In the beginning of each one, he wrote a little homily that tried to link up his own Confucius-like wisdom with whatever Easy Bild project was at hand.

So there would be a couple of paragraphs where he waxed poetic about some general concept essential to the good life, and then there would be a paragraph where he'd try to make you think you'd never done better by yourself than you did the moment you decided, say, to purchase the Easy Bild book on building a plywood bar in your basement.

A tragically overlooked 20th-century Thoreau was Mr. Brann.

+ The older you get, the more quiet you become. Life humbles you deeply, as you age. You realize how much nonsense you've wasted time on. You start accepting things for what they really are. You stop forcing friendships and connections with people. You just learn to grow.

Build a tool shed, and see how quickly it creates a new you indeed.

(You're not... scared, are you? Unwilling to pick up a hammer and try something new?...Man-UP, son! Build that tool shed and stop being such a pathetic loser!)
