Build a tool shed, and see how quickly it creates a new you indeed.

(You're not... scared, are you? Unwilling to pick up a hammer and try something new?...Man-UP, son! Build that tool shed and stop being such a pathetic loser!)

From a series of circa-1960s D.I.Y. books called "Easy Bild" that were published by a fellow named Donald Brann. In the beginning of each one, he wrote a little homily that tried to link up his own Confucius-like wisdom with whatever Easy Bild project was at hand.

So there would be a couple of paragraphs where he waxed poetic about some general concept essential to the good life, and then there would be a paragraph where he'd try to make you think you'd never done better by yourself than you did the moment you decided, say, to purchase the Easy Bild book on building a plywood bar in your basement.

A tragically overlooked 20th-century Thoreau was Mr. Brann.

"What was of vital importance yesterday, holds little value if we lose the mental or physical capability to enjoy it. But like most important forces beyond our control, what we sometimes lose, frequently opens door [sic] to new opportunities."

+ The older you get, the more quiet you become. Life humbles you deeply, as you age. You realize how much nonsense you've wasted time on. You start accepting things for what they really are. You stop forcing friendships and connections with people. You just learn to grow.

kelly and i met in panera to plan out the introduction and research sections of our methods project. at this point i was deep in thought about reality television, or something.

This gorilla was deep in thought when i saw her. I sat for 10 minutes trying to get the feeling right, i love this picture it's one of my favorites so far!

In spite of the fire, the atmosphere seems pretty cold to me; I suppose its OK for ski season. So what's with the fire? What does it cost to keep this particular fire burning? Does it burn every day? Does it burn around the clock? What's with the woman? Does she sit there all day? Is she just waiting for someone who is in one of those shops?

Really, I could have asked people who knew - certainly the woman could have told me why she sat there - I suppose any of the shop keepers could have told me about the fire. Instead, I took a picture and now you know as much about it as I do.
