One of the deepest canyons in the world with a good path high above the Yangtze River to get away from the throbbing roar of the river and inexpensive accommodations along the way. Other deep canyons in the world such as the Grand Canyon in America don’t have cheap hotels and restaurants along inner canyon trails like this does.
The Lauterbrunnen valley is one of the deepest and most beautiful in the Alps, comparing the height difference of the adjacent mountains and the valley floor. In some places the cliff walls are 1000 m high. Streams flowing down the mountains, at the edge of the rocky walls of the valley, form high waterfalls. The most famous of these are the Staubbach Falls (visible on the right) and the Trummelbach Falls. The valley is closed by a huge rock wall stretching from the Gletscherhorn peak to the Breithorn peak, almost 1000 meters high. On the left, the snow-capped Jungfrau at 4158 m above sea level.

Are you your thoughts?
Or the thinker of the thought?
Or that to which thoughts appear?
Is there a difference, and who or what is *I* in this equation....?
Reflections.
And what is reflecting and where are you in that equation....?
These are not questions people normally ask, but they should be. Sometimes the things that seem the most obvious are the things that need the deepest scrutiny .

Wastwater is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park, England. The lake is almost 3 miles (4.8 km) long and more than one-third mile (540 m) wide. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet (79 m), and is owned by the National Trust. It is one of the finest examples of a glacially 'over-deepened' valley. The surface of the lake is about 200 feet above sea level, while its bottom is over 50 feet below sea level.
The head of the Wasdale Valley is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in England, including Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Lingmell. The steep slopes on the southeastern side of the lake, leading up to the summits of Whin Rigg and Illgill Head, are known as the "Wastwater Screes" or on some maps as "The Screes". These screes formed as a result of ice and weathering erosion on the rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, that form the fells to the east of the lake, towards Eskdale. They are approximately 2,000 feet, from top to base, the base being about 200 feet below the surface of the lake.

Takamagahara (2,126m) Sep 1976
Takamagahara is a quiet unexplored region located in the deepest part of the Northern Alps of Japan. Few people visited here 45 years ago.
Note: This was taken less than a month (5/20) ago. At the time, there were still 70" of snow around. No hiking allowed. So happy we got to see it, one of my dreams did come true. :-))
Standing lakeside at Crater Lake is like nothing else—the deepest water in the country, filling a sleeping, dormant volcano, can only be described as a blue enigma. To visit Crater Lake is to step into the fiery moments of Earth's creation.
The deepest lake in the United States and the seventh deepest lake in the world is at Crater Lake National Park in Southern Oregon at the Cascade Mountains.
The lake (1,943 feet deep) lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, and was created when the 12,000 foot high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption. Because the lake is filled almost entirely by snowfall, it is one of the clearest lakes in the world.
Crater Lake National Park is comprised of 183,224 acres of mountains, peaks, evergreen forests, and lake. The ranging elevations throughout the park provide diverse habitats for an array of wildlife and make for an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom. Crater Lake must be seen to be appreciated properly. Photographs simply cannot depict the majesty of the lake in its setting, the depth of the blue.

"What is magic? In the deepest sense, magic is an experience. It's the experience of finding oneself alive within a world that is itself alive. It is the experience of contact and communication between oneself and something that is profoundly different from oneself: a swallow, a frog, a spider weaving its web."
David Abram
Arriving in Italy, I was immediately enchanted with my surroundings. However, I found a new kind of magic early one evening. While staying in Tuscany and wandering through the gardens near our lodgings, I saw a bit of movement along the ground.
Having always been fond of frogs, I knelt down and had a lovely conversation with this critter. It was quite one-sided, but I had a feeling that each blink of his or her eye was enough to make me happy.

~~The day (5/20) we went, the park was just opened a week ago, there were still 70" of snow around. Thus, no hiking allowed. GOGH! It's such a BREATHTAKING lake to say the least. So HAPPY that my dreams to see such did come true.~~

Note: How did a mountain become a lake? A massive volcanic eruption 7,700 years ago left a deep basin in the place where a mountain peak once stood. Centuries of rain and snow filled the basin, forming a deep blue lake whose waters are of unmatched color and clarity. Other colors of the spectrum are absorbed. Blue wavelengths are scattered and seen by human eyes. Its' the deepest lake in the US. Your trip to the rim to view the lake is a climb up the flank of this transformed volcano.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

The deepest rocks exposed here are PreCambrian, laid down before the existence of animal shells, which arrived about 540 million years ago. The other rocks are Paleozoic, all more than 270 million years, older than dinosaurs. The Canyon was cut during the last 6 million years. The trees, growing slowly at high altitude in an arid climate, may be about a century old, more or less. All the little people on the observation point were born in the second half of the 20th Century, or later, I suspect. And of course the clouds were being formed as I took the photo. Not sure when Sisyphus dropped that boulder, shown previously.

Yours truly
You pull me deep into my deepest desire
Can you meet me in the midnight?
a river is never silent. even its
deepest pools thrive with dark
or dreamy utterances. they shelter
more than we can say we know
from the poem 'listening to the river' by Brian Turner.
this is the Taieri river, now my local, just beyond the hills...
it reminds me of the river I grew up beside,
the river that brought me up.
but this river has it's own voice, spirits and songs...
and as soon as I arrive
I feel them flow into me
and then, without words or sound
I too am singing...
I was recently here again and decided to post a few images of the Taieri.... starting with some older images.
This one reworked from a previous post,
one of my favourite images from way back :-)

My scars remind me that I did indeed survive my deepest wounds. That in itself is an accomplishment. And they bring to mind something else, too. They remind me that the damage life has inflicted on me has, in many places, left me stronger and more resilient. What hurt me in the past has actually made me better equipped to face the present.
I am unfamiliar with this U.K. duo, but when I saw their name on a list of bands I knew it was the one to pick. Wednesday’s drive from Yosemite to Nevada City was via Lake Tahoe where the water truly is the deepest of blues. HSOS!

A stormy, very windy day, looking from Oregon across this remote canyon towards Idaho.
Canyons are defined by depth, and in North America there is none deeper than Hells Canyon. At its lowest, the Snake River sinks an astonishing 7,993 feet beneath the canyon rim, nearly 2,000 feet deeper than the “Grand” Canyon. For nearly 6 million years this deep gorge has been carved by the steady erosive force of the Snake River (which has come quite aways from it's origin in Yellowstone National Park).
And unlike the truly GRAND canyon I pretty much had this to myself.......;-))

I feel it everywhere,
All through the day and night;
Winter is coming......

Located on the East Coast of India, in the Ananthagiri hills of the Araku Valley are the famous Bora Caves. One of the largest and deepest caves in the country with a variety of speleothems ranging in size and irregularly shaped stalactites and stalagmites. Basically the caves are karstic limestone structures. This shot captures the intriguing inside of the caves so beautifully lit by different color lights. The stairs going up and down look like a maze with no end. The yellow light at the deep center looks like the light from heaven. The view is scary and soothing at the same time!

This is the deepest gorge in south-west England, and stretches a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the spectacular "Devil's Cauldron" whirlpool at the bridge end to the very fine 30-metres-tall "White Lady Waterfall" at the other end. There are excellent beautiful walks from one end of the Gorge to the other, alongside the River Lyd and on the winding upper path that gives a view steeply down into the Gorge through the very tall and slender trees that stretch upwards to find the light.
