It's Deepavali or Diwali today, the Hindu festival of lights celebrated in India, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and anywhere else with an Indian / Hindu population. I was told that even the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland has put up a display of lights and decorations this year to mark this event.

In this pic is a "kolam" or "rangoli", a design made using coloured rice grains on the floor of the Gardens mall in Kuala Lumpur. It is a Hindu practice which is believed to bring prosperity.

To read more about kolams, here is the Wikipedia article:

Friends, My presence on flickr will be very low till Nov 3,2008 due to Diwali Holidays in India.

Wish you very Happy Deepavali ...!!!

Kolam are images/drawings made from coloured flour or rice. They are a traditional ornament of Indian festivals and celebrations.

Diwali / Dipavali / Divali or Deepavali refers to the festival of light observed by Hindus and Sikhs. The festival is said to be a main event in the lives of Jains and Newar Buddhists too. Deepavali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. During the celebration homes are brightly illuminated with oil lamps, new cloths and lavish food is synonym to the Deepavali just as any other festival around the world.

Kolams are colourful drawings formed with coloured powders. They are commonly found at many Malaysian shopping malls, hotels and other private sector public spaces to mark the Deepavali/Diwali festival. This mainly Hindu (but also marked by Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists) festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil.

Kolams are often made from coloured rice powder and traditionally they were intended to be both decorative and symbolic of being inviting to and at harmony with the world of animals. Insects and birds would often feed from kolams.

One more post on the Deepavali celebration in Singapore.

The Indians have one of the riches culture in the World. We are only witnessing the general side of the culture in an urbanized country. It would be great to immerse deeper into their culture.

Happy Deepavali (pronounced dee-paa-va-li). Also commonly referred to as Diwali.

It is the festival of lights in India and for Hindus all over the world. It celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and mirrorless over DSLR.

(OK, just kidding about that last wisecrack!)

The festivities include lighting up lamps, wearing new clothes, eating a lot of high calorie foods, socializing and fireworks on a scale not seen in any other country.

Although it has its roots in religion, by and large, it is a social event and is celebrated by people of all religion, the way Christmas is.

Interrupting my Netherlands series to wish everyone a happy Deepavali. It is the Indian festival of lights, also called Diwali. It is a time of the year to light up many lamps, socialize, eat vast quantities of fatty food and sweets, and set off a ton of fireworks round the clock for 2-3 days! Not good for either one's health or bank balance, but a merry time is assured!

Happy diwali/deepavali to all my Flickr friends!!

Thanks to Rajan for Light arrangements!

This is a show of light near a disco/pub situated in front of the Sunway Resort Hotel. I couldn't resist the lights reflected on the water. Apparently, the hotel management has not removed this decorations even after the festivities.

Happy Deepavali to all may the festival of lights bring in joy and prosperity to your lives .

Shubh Deepavali, happy Dewali to everyone.

I wish all of you that the lights of Diwali illuminate the year ahead.

Thank you for being there and for your kind comments which are always an amazing support to my work.

Instead of the traditional picture with deepa or deeya (earthen lamp) I selected this unsual and simple image which was shot last year at night during the Dewali festivities on a boat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).

We were lighting many candles that we were dropping on the holy waters while making wishes.

I like this blur picture which stands for the symbol of the begining of love between two of my closest friends...a deep moment of happiness which is the proof that fairy tales do exist...

Today the South India Celebrates Deepavali, in comemoration of the victory of Lord Krishna over Narakasura. Tomorrow, the North India Celebrate Diwali. For Hindus, Diwali signifies the return or Lord Rama, the ideal human being from exile, the Sikh celebrate it as the day of return of Guru Hrgobind Sahab from detention at Gwalior, and for Jains, this is the day of Nirvana of Lord Mahavira. Diwali is marked by lighting of lines of lamps, exchange of gifts, sweets, fireworks, gaiety, buying of household items and gambling! This is a time when people remember the near and dear ones and wish them health, wealth and happiness! Flickr is my family and you are all the members, whose association, support and artistic talents I cherish and admire. It is only proper that I wish all of you a very happy, prosperous and joyful Diwali and many many clicking in the coming months!

May the festival of lights encircle your life with joy and happiness. Wishing all my friends a very happy Deepavali.
