The Soul Nebula, up close and personal.

 

The beautiful nebula is right next to the equally famous Heart Nebula. Both large nebulae in the constellation Cassiopeia. This photo shows a small portion of the soul nebula to highlight some of the details of the dust.

 

Captured using narrowband filters and colour arranged into a SHO palette, this gives the image a beautiful blue lagoon-like feel.

✨ NGC 3358 - Dancing Galaxies in Hydra ✨

Behold the cosmic dance of NGC 3358 and its celestial companions, a spectacular pair of interacting galaxies in the constellation Hydra. These distant galaxies, shaped by gravitational forces, offer a glimpse into the complex choreography of galactic evolution.

📍 Location: Constellation Hydra, approximately 100 million light-years away

🌟 Apparent Magnitude: ~11.5

📐 Apparent Size: ~3 arcminutes

 

About the Region:

The larger spiral galaxy displays beautifully warped arms, a sign of tidal interactions caused by its smaller companion. These interactions trigger star formation, evident in the glowing regions of blue and pink scattered throughout the galaxies. The surrounding star field adds depth, showcasing the universe’s vastness.

The Whirlpool Galaxy is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It's distance to Earth is approximately 23 million light years.

 

The Orion Nebula and Running Man Nebula (M42 and NGC1975) are also found in the constellation of Orion, approximately 1345 light years away.

This new Hubble image reveals the gigantic Pinwheel galaxy, one of the best known examples of "grand design spirals", and its supergiant star-forming regions in unprecedented detail. The image is the largest and most detailed photo of a spiral galaxy ever taken with Hubble.

The Eagle Nebula is a stunning combination of active star formation and sculpted clouds of gas and dust. The towering Pillars of Creation are shaped by intense radiation and stellar winds from nearby massive stars. Within these dark columns, dense pockets of gas collapse to form new stars, a process that has been ongoing for millions of years.

This image highlights the intricate interplay of hydrogen (Hα), oxygen (OIII), and sulfur (SII) emissions, using a narrowband palette to bring out the fine details of the nebula. The color tones emphasize the rich textures and the glowing edges of the famous pillars.

A dive into the Dark Horse Nebula (Barnard 78), one of the most striking examples of a dark nebula, nestled within the rich Milky Way star fields of the constellation Ophiuchus. A masterpiece of contrast, it reveals the cosmic interplay between light and shadow.

📍 Location: Constellation Ophiuchus, approximately 500 light-years away

🌟 Apparent Magnitude: Difficult to measure due to its dark, opaque nature

📐 Apparent Size: Spanning nearly 10 degrees, including nearby structures

 

About the Region:

Dark nebulae like B78 are dense regions of interstellar dust and gas that block light from the stars and nebulae behind them. The Dark Horse Nebula is part of a larger complex, including the Pipe Nebula and the Coalsack Nebula, creating a silhouette against the bright Milky Way. These regions are fertile grounds for future star formation.

This new Hubble image reveals the gigantic Pinwheel galaxy, one of the best known examples of "grand design spirals", and its supergiant star-forming regions in unprecedented detail. The image is the largest and most detailed photo of a spiral galaxy ever taken with Hubble.

This is a mixture of 2 cameras. A Ha mosaic with an ATK314L and the RGB from an ATK4000

Deep Sky Background Image (www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/spitzer/multimedia/pia16884.html) was made with 3 images composited together from The Hubble Space Telescope (visible), Chandra (x-ray) and Spitzer (infrared) Telescopes of the Small Magellanic Clouds. Then made more monster-like with digital imaging tools. The photo of the sculpture was taken from my somewhat unorganized photo files and can’t remember if it was taken at either the Boston Museum or at the MET in NYC and the name of the sculpture either. The overall image is a modern update of a tradition in Western Art of chained maidens being threatened by terrible monsters; think the well-known painting of Andromeda chained to rocks with the Sea Monster closing in fast.

M27: The Dumbbell Nebula, a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, is approximately 1,360 Light Years away.

The Pinwheel Galaxy is a face-on spiral galaxy 21 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.

Photo of Crab Nebula, the remains of the famous Supernova Explosion of 1054 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005. All the heavy atoms in our bodies were formed in very large stars that underwent a supernova explosion.

The image of Galaxy M106 is composite of images taken by 3 different Space Telescopes: the Visual Image Space Telescope by Hubble and then combined and completed with images and data taken by the astrophotographers Robert Gendler and Jay GaBany using ground-based telescopes, then further combined by yours truly using an X-Ray Image taken by the Chandra Space Telescope and an Infrared Image taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope taken of M106. Figure created iusing Poser Software and extensively reworked in Photoshop.

this is an unguided capture

Based on a Photo of NGC 6369 (the Ghost Nebula) from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Photo Archive and manipulated and combined with a photo of my eye.

Background photo of the Active Galaxy Centaurus A by the Hubble Space Telescope. Figure created using Poser software.

In homage to Einsteins's ~ 100 year old General Relativity Theory and a nod to VanGogh's Starry Night. Background Photo is of swirling and spiraling grain in a very old burnt out Pine Tree Stump in Mt Lemmon National Park in Tucson AZ. The 55 some odd spiral galaxies from various NASA websites.

Photo of M101 called the Pinwheel Galaxy is from the Hubble Space Telescope Archive. The fractal image from the famous mandelbrot equation set and available to work with in the App called FRAX.

The background image shown here is the result of an international project called Illustris. The Illustris Project (website launched May 5, 2014) is the very latest collaboration amongst physicists, astronomers and computer scientists using supercomputers in US, France and Germany to stimulate the evolution of the universe. It took 8,192 computers and 19 million hours of computing time to come up with their results. Credit given to Illustris Collaboration/Illustris Simulation.
