Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)

In full breeding plumage and singing, this male is getting ready for nesting.

“The buoyant, flutelike melody of the Western Meadowlark ringing out across a field can brighten anyone’s day. Meadowlarks are often more easily heard than seen, unless you spot a male singing from a fence post. This colorful member of the blackbird family flashes a vibrant yellow breast crossed by a distinctive, black, V-shaped band. Look and listen for these stout ground feeders in grasslands, meadows, pastures, and along marsh edges throughout the West and Midwest, where flocks strut and feed on seeds and insects….. The nest of the Western Meadowlark usually is partially covered by a grass roof. It may be completely open, however, or it may have a complete roof and an entrance tunnel several feet long….. The oldest recorded Western Meadowlark was at least 6 years, 6 months old when it was found in Colorado.”

Let me immediately declare that I'm not an ornothologist. I think this might be an Andean Eagle but won't be shocked if I'm wrong, although it might necessitate a change of title if it's actually a Peruvian Sparrow! ;-)

I took this in a small village in Colca Canyon, Peru. The village was noteworthy because it seemed much more affluent that the surrounding villages. The roads were new and the buildings much nicer. Our guide (very gently) explained (in a roundabout manner) that a "special" (female) friend of the then President Fujimori lived there...and it seems the President visited often!

The Model 770 Amphicar (seen on the left side of the photograph above) was named after its ability to achieve speeds of seven knots in the water and 70 mph on land. 3,878 Amphicars were manufactured in Germany from 1961 to 1968. During that time 3,046 were imported into the United States. The Amphicar is rear-engined and uses a 4-cylinder British-built Triumph Herald motor producing 43 hp. All Amphicars are convertibles, offered to civillians in four colors; Beach White, Regatta Red, Lagoon Blue, and Fjord Green (Aqua). Two American Presidents owned Amphicars; Jimmy Carter and Lyndon B. Johnson. President Johnson would invite friends and even foreign dignitaries to his Texas ranch for a joyride in his car.

Today, the Boathouse Orlando at Disney Springs is the only place in the world that offers the unforgettable & thrilling experience of a Captain’s Guided Tour in a vintage Amphicar. These rare cars drive on land and enter the water with a splash, taking you on a Captain Guided, 25-minute tour of the landmarks of Disney Springs. Their fleet of Amphicars were purchased from private collections worldwide – and less than 400 exist worldwide today.

Lots of debate about why leaves turn red in the fall...red keeps the leaves warmer when the weather gets cooler; the chemical that makes them red acts as an antioxidant to help get through winter; red attracts more birds so the tree gets pollinated better; or the quality of the soil where the tree is located helps in determining the color (better soil = less red, worse soil = more red). Whatever the reason, they make a great photograph...this definitely is the best season for photography!!

I declare February LOVE, romance and beauty month.

Valentine's day is gone, but the leaves are curling heart-shaped, more and more, flower-heads bending closer…

I know it is mostly about commerce and some are a bit blasé about it, but it is a nice thought, although one day in the year is not enough, in my book, to pay 'special' attention to your partner.

Here it is Valentine's day EVERY DAY, we give flowers when WE feel like it! LOL.

Have a loving day and thanx, M, (*_*)

Declare the pennies on your eyes - from "Taxman" by the Beatles, released on Revolver, August 5, 1966

Taxman

youtu.be/gMdcE8jdz70

One, two, three, four

One, two

Let me tell you how it will be

There's one for you, nineteen for me

'Cause I'm the taxman

Yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five percent appear too small

Be thankful I don't take it all

'Cause I'm the taxman

Yeah, I'm the taxman

(If you drive a car) I'll tax the street

(If you try to sit) I'll tax your seat

(If you get too cold) I'll tax the heat

(If you take a walk) I'll tax your feet

Taxman!

'Cause I'm the taxman

Yeah, I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for

(Ah, ah, Mr. Wilson)

If you don't want to pay some more

(Ah, ah, Mr. Heath)

'Cause I'm the taxman

Yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die (taxman)

Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman)

'Cause I'm the taxman

Yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me (taxman)

Table Mountain from a starlight snowshoe trek up to Artist Point, a crescent moon is just disappearing from sight. Technical note: The rule of 500 says that shooting at 11mm should allow me a 45 second exposure without star distortion, yet at 15 seconds I am starting to get distortion along the left edge... those most distant from the north star.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."

Psalm 19: 1-4

I moved sideways into clouds and skies for this series. This could be a "hard hat" storm out east. Keep your "rock" umbrella as ready as I keep my rock skis ready for the early season. Finally, the fairgrounds really approached twilight's end for last summer's carny; I am ready for the rides to pop. This cloud was a feast of captures. Clouds do this as the atmosphere vastly expands after compressing, cooling and clearing the Rockies from the west. I liked this sky but there are degrees. I figured folks on the eastern plains, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma, better go for the hard hats. Black is the new blue.

No global warming under here; no global warming under there! People won't continue to believe the TheRump's lies after FEMA is broke. This will soon be a thumper and those folks will need to flash the sign of the cross to the heavens. That fossil-fueled summer heated up our atmosphere and with 8% more atmospheric moisture trigger smack downs worl d wide! Insurance companies declare events as acts of god instead of global warming for obvious reasons. They don't have payouts if they can blame god. It's more important to stage a WWIII even before our regular scheduled mass extinction. Few southern conservatives are listening. "The extinction won't be televised," Gil Scott Heron. Well... scientists said the weather would be more violent as the climate warmed. The heating increased humidity in the atmosphere by 8%. Here we are, we have met the enemy and he is us.

i would like to share a story about the broken window, which is written by Ivory Illusion, hope you like it as much as i do.:D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Broken Window

As the sun turned orangey gold declaring the end of a tiring day, Imran knew the hard work of this day has ended. He grabbed the water pot beside him and sat on the old tree trunk drinking, facing the slowly fading sun. From behind him came his younger sister Abida, looking at him with her wide green eyes. Her smile lifted all the exhaustion he felt. She sat beside him and gazed at the horizon where the sun was going to vanish into in a little while. Both brother and sister were thinking of the same thing but did not speak to each other. As if they were connected by telepathy. Tears began to rundown Abeda’s cheeks silently then she looked at Imran who tried so hard to hide his feelings from her. He hugged her and kissed her forehead as she continued crying.

“I can’t believe that my little sister has grown up so quickly” Imran said bitterly swallowing his pain and added “I promise you that I will make you the best wedding in the village”

“No… you don’t have to do than, look at yourself. You don’t eat well; don’t have enough sleep and barely rest. I can’t let you do that to yourself for… for me!”

“Don’t worry about me dear, I will be alright, I just want father to be resting in piece knowing that I am taking good care of you and mother”

“He knows that you are doing your best, please Imran don’t push yourself so hard”

“I promised I will make you the best wedding and that is what you’ll get so be happy about it and show me your lovely smile, come one where is it, let me see it.”

She looked at him with her teary eyes and smiled when all of a sudden their brotherly moment was interrupted by their mother’s cry calling Imran. He ran to her in the stable and the old women said in a worried tone as she saw him “The calf, the black calf ran to the woods!”

“Oh no! I have to go get it.”

“Don’t go now! It’s getting dark” said the worried mother.

“Yes, the sun will be gone in minutes, wait till the morning” Added Abeda.

“I can’t risk it, it is your husband’s gift, I have to get it back” Imran replied while running to the woods as fast as he could, vanishing into darkness in front of his worried mother and sister.

In the woods, Imran stopped to catch his breath, and found himself surrounded completely by long trees. It was dark, but only little sunlight made him make him was through the jungle, never the less he still wanted to find that calf no matter what. He walked hoping to spot the calf soon before night falls. But, there was no sign of it anywhere.

Suddenly, behind the bushes he thought he saw it jumping and running away taking a visible clear route on the ground which he followed as fast as possible. Till he reached a wall of long bushes blocking his sight, through it was the only way that the calf could go, it was the end of that route. He quickly crossed through it and found himself standing in front of a huge abandoned old mansion and a broken window facing him painted in light blue. Things were much visible in the mansion aria because he was out of the woods. He looked at the sky and saw that there would be no way for him to return home at this hour because he was practically lost in a place he never knew existed.

He went to check the place so he can find a room to spend the night in away from the cold night wind. The bricks in the wall were clearly visible behind the pealed old yellow paint and bare thin branches. Right in front of the window a tidy raw of wild flowers grew. He could barely see the colors; they were mostly red and orange. They made him feel like they were taken care of by a human from the way they were arraigned.

Imran approached the broken window trying to look inside the house. Something about this discovery bewitched him, he forgot about the calf and all of his worries. As his foot rested on the damp soil beneath him, he saw a shimmering light flickering for a moment lighting the dark room. He felt fear yet, wanted to know what the cause of that bright light was.

He got closer to the window, placed both hands on each side of the wall and looked carefully into the room. As he did, a great light struck the whole place swallowing him into the unknown.

Imran struggled to open his heavy eyelids, his body so weak, surrendering to the spellbinding enchanting angelic voice singing a soft lullaby above his head. He forced himself to open his eyes, and what he saw was way beyond what he imagined.

A woman or an angel, he no longer could tell, sat beside him on the edge of a wide silk bed. Her beauty was indescribable; she was the most beautiful woman his eyes have ever laid sight on. With skin like milk, hair as black as nigh, and eyes as light and transparent as fine agate, he no longer was able to speak, nor move. Afraid if he did he will disturb this magical being. He laid there unable to turn his eyes away from her face, studying its every little detail as she moved her lips to sing. He though he was dead in paradise, enjoying his reward for his hard life.

The woman knew he was finally awake and stopped singing. She looked at him with a light smile. He still was unable to speak, not because he physically couldn’t, but because he had no words to say. She swiftly tossed her long hair that rested on her chest behind her and stood up facing him. The young man could no longer think, he was totally overtaken buy her powerful gaze.

“You must be wondering how you ended up here?” the woman coquettishly said.

She moved in the room, walking back and forth beside the bed. Rolling the end of a lock of her hair on her finger and said “You are not dead.”

The farmer lifted his body and asked “If I am not dead then where am I?”

“You are at the same place you came to.”

“You mean the abandoned mansion? But that is impossible, I am sure no one was there!”

“How are you so sure?”

“Because I remember very well that the last thing I did was looking through the glass in to one of the rooms and nothing was there!”

“Oh, you mean you peeping into my room, this room.”

“Peeping?” Imran wondered loudly, and tried to remember, he was so sure nothing was there. It was nothing like this room. “That is not true, because I was pretty sure that nothing was in it!”

‘Oh’ she exclaimed taking the peacock feather fan placed on the side table beside the bed and continued as she swayed the fan near her beautiful face “There was… you simply was not able to see it.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“You have awakened me from my long slumber.”

“Awakened you?”

“You seem not to understand anything of this yet do you?”

“What should I understand? Who are you and what did you do to me?” He said as he moved to stand.

“You are here to break the window!”

“What are you talking bout? I have to go, please!”

The mysterious woman smiled and slowly walked back to him, stood so close, rested her right hand on Imran’s chest. He looked at her hand then, at her face. He was literally paralyzed. She looked directly into his eyes and whispered “I told you…” she delicately swiped the feathers of the fan on his face “you have to brake the window” then gently pushed him, leaving him lying on his back, sailing into the dream land.

A dark angel readying to make a declaration

thanks to romantic fae for the wings!

We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of mankind, was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, has been revealed by God, and therefore should firmly and constantly be believed by all the faithful.

—Pope Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus, December 8, 1854

PRAYER TO THE

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception

of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

did prepare a worthy dwelling place for Your Son,

we beseech You that,

as by the foreseen death of this, Your Son,

You did preserve Her from all stain,

so too You would permit us, purified through Her intercession, to come unto You.

Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.

Amen.

A photo difficult to frame and expose correctly because the work is in the dark and the contrast is violent with the broken boat!

“Mare Nostrum” refers to the repeated tragedies of boats full of immigrants that capsized trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. "Mare Nostrum" is part of a major project by Jean-Paul Philippe, who exhibits with 30 artists who give their vision of exile at the Cité Miroir, in Liège, Belgium. The painting on wood represents the capsized boat that the artist calls the Cenotaph. Jean-Paul Philippe declares: "This Cenotaph boat was born from a project. The project of a large stone sculpture that I had to make in Italy on the island of Lampedusa. The first gateway to Southern Europe It was during an exhibition at the Museum "Santa Maria della Scala" in Siena in 2008 that I was asked to create a work from volcanic stone extracted from a neighboring island. had to take an interest in this project. It was impossible for me not to evoke in this way a work which was to become a real drama and transform this sea into a vast tomb.It was the beginning of a perilous emigration, when the first boats in wood arrived on the island, crashed or never arrived. However, this project did not survive changing political moods... let it be finished. A powerless but fraternal gesture, eyes and hands witnessing this contemporary tragedy."

"Mare Nostrum" poetically alludes to the painful contemporary conflict of refugees on the borders of Europe.

Out of them arise the worlds unlimited in number and into them they are dissolved. This is how the worlds are formed. "Originally built in the 1990s, the giant bottle stood in front of what was then known as Everything Coca Cola. Today it still stands in front of what is now called the Coca-Cola Store, and it’s the spot where countless adults and kids loved taking a fun picture before venturing into the world of everything Coca-Cola to taste, explore, people watch, and shop!

After the foundation of the first Grand Lodge (F&AM) in England in 1717, a rival Grand Lodge (AF&AM) arose less than two decades later, calling itself the Antients (or Ancients), whereby it intended to assert greater authenticity than the rival "modern" Grand Lodge. The Antients were also known as the Athol Masons, from their first Grand Master, the Duke of Athol. Some authors (e.g., Carl Claudy) say the Antients were schismatic --i.e., had split off from the "modern" Grand Lodge; others (e.g., Allen Roberts) of more recent vintage say that the Antients were founded independently by Lodges deriving from Scottish and Irish traditions who were excluded by the English "moderns."

These competing English Grand Lodges, along with Grand Lodges established in Scotland and Ireland, issued charters for Lodges in the American colonies into the latter half of the 18th century, until the American Revolutionary War led to the ties between the colonies and the mother country being severed. Long after that event, in 1813 (when the two countries were again at war, in fact), the rival English Grand Lodges amalgamated to form the United Grand Lodge of England, which is the governing body of English Freemasonry to this day.

Meanwhile, in the new United States of America, Grand Lodges were organized separately in each state, some as offspring of Provincial Grand Lodges and some as self-declared independent Grand Lodges (e.g., Virginia). These Grand Lodges comprised Lodges whose charters had been issued by both the Ancient and "modern" Grand Lodges in England (as well as a few Scottish and Irish constitution Lodges). The designation of whether a Grand Lodge was Free and Accepted (F&AM) or Ancient Free and Accepted (AF&AM) was therefore almost an arbitrary choice, based perhaps on who had a bit more political power when the new Grand Lodge was formed.

In particular, one cannot conclude anything significant about the nature of the ritual used by a Grand Lodge as to its Antient or "modern" content, based only on the designation as F&AM or AF&AM. Many Grand Lodges use an amalgamation of the forms, and it would take detailed study to determine the precise provenance of each American Grand Lodge's ritual contents. It does appear that Pennsylvania may adhere most closely to the work of the Antients, while a northern tier of states, running from Connecticut through Minnesota and perhaps farther west, preserves the "modern" ritual most closely. In those states where a ritual cipher is permitted, which seems to be more a characteristic of the "moderns," the incorporation of changes to the ritual occur with much lower frequency (a fairly obvious observation). An example is the phrase "any be due," which is synonymously rendered "aught be due" in the apparently "modern" jurisdictions: The substitution of a common word ("any") for an archaic one ("aught") is a natural evolution of an oral tradition, while the reverse substitution virtually never occurs in oral transmission. The states with a printed ritual cipher have maintained "aught," while "any" has appeared in those states eschewing such written aids.

Incidentally, there are two jurisdictions which use neither F&AM nor AF&AM: The District of Columbia uses FAAM, and South Carolina uses AFM. Again, these are distinctions without any real difference.

This particular lodge in Rockvale, Tennessee is of the F&AM variety. While I am not a freemason, these 'lodges' have always intrigued me and caught my attention when I run across one. The above information is interesting in what and how the differences between a F&AM versus a AF&AM lodge are but does a very good job of still skirting around the specifics of what happens inside the walls of these lodges.

Dear friend, here are 5 things you should know:

1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)

2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)

3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)

4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)

Read the Bible for yourself. Allow the Lord to speak to you through his Word. YOUR ETERNITY IS AT STAKE!

Sincerely,

Someone who cares about you

Alligator photographed in a national preserve 45 minutes from my home. I have no idea of its length. The many reflections and color in the water were created by plants growing by the water. It appears I have a visiting dragonfly on its back.

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), sometimes referred to colloquially as a gator or common alligator, is a large crocodilian reptile endemic to the Southeastern United States. It is one of two living species in the genus Alligator within the family Alligatoridae.

Adult male American alligators measure 11.2 to 15.1 ft in length, and can weigh up to (999 lb). Females are smaller, measuring (8.5 to 9.8 ft) in length.

The American alligator inhabits freshwater wetlands, such as marshes and cypress swamps from Texas to southeastern and coastal North Carolina.

American alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Hatchlings feed mostly on invertebrates.

They play an important role as ecosystem engineers in wetland ecosystems through the creation of alligator holes, which provide both wet and dry habitats for other organisms.

Throughout the year, in particular during the breeding season, American alligators bellow to declare territory and locate suitable mates. Male American alligators use infrasound to attract females.

The conservation status of the American alligator is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Historically, hunting had decimated their population, and the American alligator was listed as an endangered species by the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Subsequent conservation efforts have allowed their numbers to increase and the species was removed from endangered status in 1987. The species is the official state reptile of three states: Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

5 MORE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

General Hux declares in a speech to the First Order assembled at Starkiller Base that they are there to witness the end of the New Republic - the government that supports the Resistance. The massive superweapon housed within the planet itself is fired and the blast destroys the entire Hosnian system. The galactic senate and the New Republic starfleet is destroyed. Kylo Ren watches the weapon from the bridge of the Finalizer in silence. Then he heads to Takodana where a spy has reported the presence of the BB unit...

The heavens declare the glory of God;

the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;

night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;

no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,

their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,

like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It rises at one end of the heavens

and makes its circuit to the other;

nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. Constructed between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, it was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over 100 lives. In bills passed by Congress during its construction, it was referred to as the Hoover Dam, after President Herbert Hoover, but was named Boulder Dam by the Roosevelt administration. In 1947, the name Hoover Dam was restored by Congress.

Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water, and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium named Six Companies, Inc., which began construction in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques used were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction, with 7 million tourists a year. The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.

85 years after its completion, Hoover dam is still considered an engineering marvel. It is named in honor of President Herbert Hoover, who played a crucial role in its creation.

For many years, residents of the American southwest sought to tame the unpredictable Colorado River. Disastrous floods during the early 1900’s led residents of the area to look to the federal government for aid, and experiments with irrigation on a limited scale had shown that this arid region could be transformed into fertile cropland, if only the river could be controlled. The greatest obstacle to the construction of such a dam was the allocation of water rights among the seven states comprising the Colorado River drainage basin. Meetings were held in 1918, 1919 and 1920, but the states could not reach a consensus.

Herbert Hoover had visited the Lower Colorado region in the years before World War I and was familiar with its problems and the potential for development. Upon becoming Secretary of Commerce in 1921, Hoover proposed the construction of a dam on the Colorado River. In addition to flood control and irrigation, it would provide a dependable supply of water for Los Angeles and Southern California. The project would be self-supporting, recovering its cost through the sale of hydroelectric power generated by the dam.

In 1921, the state legislatures of the Colorado River basin authorized commissioners to negotiate an interstate agreement. Congress authorized President Harding to appoint a representative for the federal government to serve as chair of the Colorado River Commission and on December 17, 1921, Harding appointed Hoover to that role.

When the commission assembled in Santa Fe in November 1922, the seven states still disagreed over the fair distribution of water. The upstream states feared that the downstream states, with their rapidly developing agricultural and power demands, would quickly preempt rights to the water by the “first in time, first in right” doctrine. Hoover suggested a compromise that the water be divided between the upper and lower basins without individual state quotas. The resulting Colorado River Compact was signed on November 24, 1922. It split the river basin into upper and lower halves with the states within each region deciding amongst themselves how the water would be allocated.

A series of bills calling for Federal funding to build the dam were introduced by Congressman Phil D. Swing and Senator Hiram W. Johnson between 1922 and 1928, all of which were rejected. The last Swing-Johnson bill, titled the Boulder Canyon Project Act, was largely written by Hoover and Secretary of the Interior Hubert Work. Congress finally agreed, and the bill was signed into law on December 21, 1928 by President Coolidge. The dream was about to become reality.

On June 25, 1929, less than four months after his inauguration, President Herbert Hoover signed a proclamation declaring the Colorado River Compact effective at last. Appropriations were approved and construction began in 1930. The dam was dedicated in 1935 and the hydroelectric generators went online in 1937. In 1947, Congress officially "restored" Hoover's name to the dam, after FDR's Secretary of the Interior tried to remove it. Hoover Dam was built for a cost of $49 million (approximately $1 billion adjusted for inflation). The power plant and generators cost an additional $71 million, more than the cost of the dam itself. The sale of electrical power generated by the dam paid back its construction cost, with interest, by 1987.

Today the Hoover Dam controls the flooding of the Colorado River, irrigates more than 1.5 million acres of land, and provides water to more than 16 million people. Lake Mead supports recreational activities and provides habitats to fish and wildlife. Power generated by the dam provides energy to power over 500,000 homes. The Hoover Compromise still governs how the water is shared.

This evening there was a light show at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.

The OH said it was due to start at 6.30pm and we got down there just after 6, only to be told it wouldn't start until 7pm.

So the OH says lets go to Wetherspoons for something to eat. But to get to Weatherspoons we have to walk by at least half dozen other restaurants. The first of which was packed coz they had a live band. But the second wasn't that full, so in I goes, ask for a table, sits down and orders wine. But then the menus arrive and the OH declares there is nothing on the menu he can eat ... he is the most fussy and difficult person in the world to feed! So I just ordered a sharing platter of mixed starters, which even he enjoyed, shock horror!!

Anyways, we were back for the light show at 7 and that lasted all of 15 minutes, and was great, only it didn't go on long enough.

This is one of the greatest things about classic cars...the details!! I don't think newer automobiles have the level of detail or craftsmanship that the old classics have...just my opinion!

This is the right rear corner of a 1956 Ford Thunderbird where you can see the classy fin just above the taillight, a chrome bumper (not plastic and painted the same color as the car), and the spare tire cover mounted on the bumper on the far left of the photo. Just great details on a great car...
