700 sq. ft. multi-level deck with roof structure. We installed sunlights and fans in the roof structure over the kitchen area. The kitchen area is faced with cultured stone. The seating area is flush with the top of the built in planter boxes giving a feeling of being on the ground while still being a few steps over ground level to keep an eye on guests in the pool.

The updating of a 25 year old deck, inspired by other wonderful designs in flickr, some original ideas, my own vision: a mix of modern, country, beauty, elegance, and above all, some of our travel observations.
We hope to be the source of inspiration to others, seeking ideas for deck design and construction - that would be the ultimate compliment.
A photography footnote: pictures taken by using a small tripod and attaching it with duct tape to a 10 ft pole - 10 sec. timer. All HDR.

The herringbone blends with the parquet pattern of the larger deck, the first inspired by another deck in flickr, the second by a famous museum parquet flooring. The squares (12 ft) are a the maximum size that could be transported with our small pick up truck. We considered having it delivered, but each piece was handpicked to get a better quality lumber - each load 25 boards.
The boards were fastened with torx head screws - much easier than phillips. The boards ends have a double joist system under that allows the screws to be far from the edge - there is no toe nailing and wood splits have been almost completely eliminated. We observed this technique the first time on a deck near Bordeaux.
The long triangles or wedges, making the round step were not as difficult to cut and get right as it may appear - the last board fit perfectly... by luck not design.

The outdoor ceiling fan hangs from a custom built cedar box to hide the electrical, and to match the pergola.
The highest level of the deck has a cedar pergola with custom rafter tails and trim details. The PVC columns compliment the Azek railing surrounding the deck.
